The developments of the internet have given database journalism a new definition, according to which it defines a process where the database becomes the center of the journalistic work (as opposed to the story in traditional journalism). It slowly evolved into data journalism; a journalistic process based on analyzing and filtering large data sets for the purpose of creating a new story.

This new international Master's program explores the opportunities of data journalism from four angles: data retrieval, data storytelling, data visualization and data publishing. It combines the scientific methods of data treatment with the core values of journalism: select, arrange, digest and reflect. The Data Journalism Master's track puts a strong focus on online and social media based journalism.

The master track Data Journalism (DJ) has a natural connection with Human Aspects of Information Technology (HAIT) and Communication Design (CD). Embedded in the strong Communication and Information Sciences program, Tilburg University believes it has launched a unique Master's program in which students learn how to transfer information and how new means of communication can be used.

The Finance Phd program at Tilburg University has two phases. Read more

MSc specialization in Finance

The Finance Phd program at Tilburg University has two phases: a preparatory Research Master combining intensive coursework and research that culminates in the writing of a Research Master Thesis (which could later be built out into a chapter of the PhD thesis); and an advanced phase in which students devote all their time to research, at the end of which they complete their PhD dissertation. Most Research Master students are funded by grants given by CentER. PhD students are employees of the University and receive a gross salary of 83000.

Students who have not done graduate work in Finance or Economics before joining the program complete the Research Master in two years. The first year consists of Economics and Econometrics courses preparing the student to specialized work in Finance. The second year is devoted to the Finance Core (four advanced courses in Asset Pricing and Corporate Finance), a few elective courses, and the writing of a Master Thesis. Students who have done graduate work before joining the program are admitted directly in the second year.

After completing the Research Master, students are eligible to start the PhD phase of the program, which typically lasts three years. Supervision during this phase is very close: students often co-author no less than two papers with their supervisors, and write at least one single-author paper under their supervisor’s guidance. Our seminar series (the department hosts over 30 seminars a year with leading scholars from the US and Europe) exposes students to cutting-edge research in all areas of Finance.

Students in the second year of the PhD spend one semester visiting a top University abroad, funded by CentER. These visits provide an early exposure to the international academic scene, create new opportunities of co-authorship, and enrich the students’ network of contacts. Our students have visited Harvard, Yale, London Business School, Caltech, among others.

Most of our PhDs find jobs in Academia. We have a very successful history of placements at top universities in Europe and America, among them Chicago GBS, Toronto Rotman, Cambridge, HEC Paris. Our graduates also show an excellent record of publications, many of them publishing chapters of their theses in top journals shortly after graduation.

Communication Design

One of the essential ways in which information is transferred and communicated is through text, whether verbal or written. Texts should inform or convince, depending on the communication objectives. Communication designers research different factors that can affect a text in order to create an effective communication tool. These factors can be characteristics of the text, such as style and structure, but also the conversation characteristics and the influence of non-verbal communication.

Furthermore, the context and purpose of a text and how readers process information also play a major role in communication. In the English-taught Master's specialization in Communication Design, you will research how communication processes work and how you can influence these processes effectively. You will learn to analyze texts and tailor them to different target groups and acquire knowledge about how to measure whether in practice a text has the desired effect.

Career Prospects Communication Design

After completing the Communication Design specialization, you will be able to conduct research on the transfer of information through text. Moreover, you will be capable of advising people about writing a clear, attractive and convincing text according to various communication objectives. You can embark on a career in different positions within profit or non-profit organizations, government agencies and related organizations or in the business world.

After graduating, you could also continue your career as an academic researcher in the broad field of communication.

This is a small selection of positions you may apply for after you have completed your programme:
•Communication Design Manager
•Communication Strategist
•Advertising Design Strategist
•Communication Design Engineer
•Device User Experience Design Specialist
•Design Researcher

The Master’s program in Data Science and Entrepreneurship combines management, entrepreneurship and business models with deep knowledge on data science methods from mathematics, statistics and computer science; understanding their limitations with regard to the law, regulations, and ethical considerations.

Why the Master's program in Data Science and Entrepreneurship?
Are you interested in deploying the potential power of big data to solve real-world problems? Is it a challenge for you to work with complex, structured and unstructured data? Do you like to transform innovative data-centered concepts and ideas into concrete novel and value-adding products and services? And to design business initiatives?

Data science entrepreneurs are able to monetize the flood of data that is generated in this digital age by exploiting the economic value of personal data, developing novel ways to get actionable insights from data streams and exploring novel marketing models. They will typically start up and/or innovate within data based product companies.

Therefore, in this English Master's program you will:
- Combine data science courses with courses that address the entrepreneurship pillar of the program
Examples of courses are: data integration and architecture, data mining, business process management, data entrepreneurship, and creative thinking and open innovation.

- Incorporate theories and concepts from legal and ethical aspects of business venturing, intellectual property, and ethical and privacy aspects of data.

- Apply data entrepreneurship in building a technology startup
The backbone of the program is formed by a series of courses called Data Entrepreneurship in Action (1-3). In these courses, student teams use data-driven methods to test the feasibility of an idea/innovation, build a data-intensive product/solution, propose sales channels and customers, and develop entrepreneurial skills in building a technology startup.

- Solve actual problems with real datasets from industrial partners
Representatives from the industrial partners will share actual problems and datasets in two or three applications domains from which student teams can choose. As 'clients' of the teams, the industrial representatives will actively work with our professors to coach the student teams.
