Epic Games Centre

Epic Games and Staffordshire University have entered a dynamic partnership to help bring game developers, the university and students closer together. At the heart of the project is the Epic Games Centre, a fully equipped space designed to nurture future industry developers studying on the university’s game design courses.

As part of the partnership, which is initially set for two years, Epic will provide hardware, teaching time and access to software and key personnel. The Epic Games Centre will also host Epic Developer Days for professional Unreal Engine users, with the first licensee events commencing this spring.

Advanced Character Prototyping: The study and application of character design, character inventory, physics, controls, animations and character statistics. 3D creation of next generation characters covering sculpting, texturing, hair and advanced shaders.

Advanced Vehicle and Weapon Prototyping: Hard surface modelling for weapons, rigging, particle dynamics and weapon textures or the research and application of theory related to weapon profiling, effects, weapon systems, vehicle performance management, handling and physics.

Mobile Games Development: Students work with in teams to produce mobile games experiencing QA, Monetisation and Platform Optimisation progressing from concept to a published product.

The first four modules of the course form the base of your studies and provide a solid grounding in the key aspects of accounting and finance. Thereafter, you will study traditional and contemporary theoretical aspects of accounting and finance.

The course includes a number of distinctive modules e.g. the Accounting Theory module addresses the underlying principles that lead to accounting conventions; the International Finance module examines the financial management of multinational corporations in a global environment. It takes you to the frontier of modern and most effective approaches of managing financial and political risks and the techniques used to hedge foreign currency exposures by multinational corporations, as well as taking advantage of the international capital markets to raise finance. The option module gives you the opportunity to explore an accounting and finance area that particularly interests you, while the research based dissertation allows you to further your knowledge in an area of interest which supports your career ambitions, or explore an area in which you would like to extend your research further at PhD level.

The aerospace industry is one of the UK's most successful industrial sectors, with its involvement in major international project groups including Airbus, Rolls Royce, British Aerospace to name but a few. Not every university that teaches engineering includes Aeronautical Engineering in its portfolio, but Staffordshire University is proud to be running this innovative MSc award. The MSc in Aeronautical Engineering builds upon the success of the undergraduate Aeronautical programme which has been running at Staffordshire for thirteen years.

The MSc is an award for the graduate engineer (who will have usually studied a BEng(hons) in Mechanical or Aeronautical Engineering or equivalent, or possibly a BSc(hons) in Aeronautical Technology) and who wishes to expand and deepen their knowledge of aeronautical engineering.

The MSc covers a broad range of areas including fixed wing and rotary aircraft, subsonic and supersonic flight regimes, aircraft propulsion systems, aircraft control systems, materials, etc. As well as taught classes, students use our extensive range of laboratories which include industry standard design and analysis software, including Pro Engineer, Phoenix CFD, ANSYS FEA, etc.

Applicants who require a Tier 4 visa for study in the UK are not able to apply for the Sandwich degree in the first instance due to Immigration regulations. We encourage International students, once enrolled, to apply for a placement and we have a dedicated team of experts who will lead you through the process. Students who are successful with finding a placement will be provided with help and advice with their visa extension application (subject to the University deadlines and Immigration requirements).

It is possible for the MSc students to join the undergraduate Aeronautics students in becoming a member of the local gliding club, where it is possible to experience gliding, whether this is just a couple of air-experience flights, or joining the club as a student member and in some cases taking hundreds of flights and achieving a gliding qualification. Many airline pilots started their flying career by gliding.

A range of external speakers will be invited to give lectures to the MSc students, including designers from industry and airline pilots. There is an opportunity for students on the MSc to undertake a placement with one of the local, regional, national or international aerospace companies, and assistance in finding these placements is given by the Placements Office.

Course content

On the Engineering Extended MSc you will spend your first semester studying modules that have been written to provide you with the academic, professional and technical skills that you will need to succeed on your chosen award. All engineering students on the Extended MSc study the same modules for one semester and then study specialist modules depending on their chosen discipline. This means that whether you have chosen the Aeronautical, Automotive, Electrical, Electronic, Mechanical, Mechatronic or Telecommunication route, you will study the following modules in your first semester:

Academic English: This module will help you to develop your English Language speaking, listening, reading and writing skills and will introduce you to the conventions of academic writing.

Study skills & Employability: This module will help you to develop the skills and knowledge required to support study at Masters level. It will also help you to develop skills that will aid you in the job market and will look at things such as writing a C.V. and creating a personal development plan.

Engineering Principles: In this module you will undertake a variety of practical, laboratory based exercises giving you a flavour of your future studies and underpinning your future learning. You will be given experience of software tools that might include product design using solid modelling, CFD analysis for aerodynamics and Finite Element Analysis for structural analysis. This will be complemented by time spent in our new and wellequipped automotive, aeronautical and mechanical laboratories.

Mathematical Applications: As an engineering graduate you should already have a strong mathematical knowledge. This module will revise your existing knowledge and introduce you to some of the more advanced mathematical concepts deployed in the field of professional engineering. Where appropriate you will utilise software to support and enhance the problem solving and analysis techniques met in this module, allowing you to hone an essential skill for the modern industry based working environment

After successfully completing the first semester, you will concentrate on your chosen core engineering discipline. You will study a total of 8 core and option modules as set out in your award structure. The student will gain an in depth understanding of PTC CREO, Cambridge Engineering Selector, ANSYS FEA, Cham Phoenics CFD, Boothroyd Dewhurst DFMA software and will gain hands on experience of related hardware such as Minolta Vi910 laser scanner, TESA coordinate measuring machine, ZCorporation and Startasys rapid prototyping, KRYLE 3 Axis Machining Centre and Beavor Turning Centre, Lister Petter Diesel engine dyno, Race Technology real time data acquisition.

The course consists of 8 taught modules plus a major personal project leading to a written thesis. The taught modules cover the broad range of activities involved in vehicle design. The MSc course in Autosport Engineering covers the latest state of the art computer based analysis and design techniques used in the automotive industry. The course has been developed in conjunction with the Automotive Industry and will provide the graduate with an indepth insight into the key technological areas that are driving automotive engineering design.

Students gain a deep understanding of the engineering principles that affect all aspects of vehicle performance including engine, suspension and aerodynamics. The course is based around the use of industry standard engineering software and hardware provided by our partners. The student will gain an in depth understanding of PTC CREO, Cambridge Engineering Selector, ANSYS FEA, Cham Phoenics CFD, Boothroyd Dewhurst DFMA software and will gain hands on experience of related hardware such as Minolta Vi910 laser scanner, TESA coordinate measuring machine, ZCorporation and Startasys rapid prototyping, KRYLE 3 Axis Machining Centre and Beavor Turning Centre, Lister Petter Diesel engine dyno, Race Technology real time data acquisition.

Good laboratory support including a design studio with over 70 Design Workstations, Manufacturing facilities including CNC machining and rapid prototyping systems, and fully equipped automotive workshop. A placement opportunity of up to 12 months is designed as an option within the course.

Course content

The course consists of 8 taught modules plus a major personal project leading to a written thesis. The taught modules cover the broad range of activities involved in vehicle design. You will study topics such as solid and surface modelling, rapid prototyping, Finite Element Analysis, advanced engine design and aerodynamics. The subject area of your final thesis can be selected to suit your own aspirations and interests. You will be assigned a supervisor with whom you will work closely to develop an academically challenging portfolio of work. The focus of this project will determine whether you will opt for the title of MSc Automotive or MSc Autosport.

In your first study stage, the PgCert, you will study five modules –this includes a 2 week preliminary study course, followed by four core modules, the completion of these modules makes you eligible for a PgCert. In the second stage the, PgDip you will study a further four modules. Once you have completed these 9 modules you can start the dissertation stage in order to qualify for a MSc.

On finishing the PgCert or PgDip stage you have the opportunity to undertake a work placement of up to 12 months. The placement has to be started and completed before you start your dissertation. You will finish your award by completing a dissertation on a network related topic.

MSc Computer Networks and Security provides specialist study of computer networks and computer security. These two areas are strongly related, given the ubiquity of networks and the vulnerability to attack of networks and of systems connected to them. Although, computer network security is covered in the course, the award is a hybrid of computer network study and computer security with the intention to equip you with advanced skills in both areas. The networking topics utilise Cisco networking equipment and support material provided by Cisco Systems Inc.

Unfortunately applicants who require a Tier 4 visa for study in the UK are not able to apply for the Sandwich degree in the first instance due to visa regulations. We encourage International students, once enrolled, to apply for a placement and if successful apply to extend their visa and transfer to the sandwich award.

Course content

On the computing extended MSc you will spend your first semester studying modules which have been written to provide you with the academic, professional and technical skills that you will need to succeed on your chosen award. All students on the extended MSc study the same modules for one semester and then study specialist modules depending on their degree. This means that whether you have chosen MSc Computer Science, MSc Computer Networks & Security, MSc Web Development or any of our other taught MSc Computing awards, you will study the following modules in your first semester:

Academic English: This module will help you to develop your English Language speaking, listening, reading and writing skills and will introduce you to the conventions of academic writing.

Study skills & Employability: This module will help you to develop the skills and knowledge required to support study at Masters level. It will also help you to develop skills which will aid you in the job market and will look at things such as writing a C.V. and creating a personal development plan.


Computing Fundamentals: This is a double module which has been designed to provide an introduction to fundamental concepts which underpin Computing. The module will enable you to revise and refresh your existing skills to prepare you for study on your specialist awards.

After successfully completing the first semester, you will be able to study core modules and choose from option modules as set out in your award handbook.

In your first study stage, the PgC, you will study five modules - a mix of award cores and networking or networking and security options. In the second stage the PgD you will study a further four modules. (Upon successful completion of 4 modules you will be eligible for a PgC in Computer Science) On finishing the PgC and before starting the dissertation you have the opportunity to undertake a work placement of 12 months. You will finish your award by completing a dissertation on a network related topic.
