Teaching And Assessment

We aim for interactive teaching sessions and you will engage in discussions, problem-solving exercises and other activities. Teaching can start in the lab or classroom and then you make the material your own by exploring and applying it. Technology Enhanced Learning makes this easier; each module has an electronic blackboard site with relevant information including electronic reading lists and access to websites, videos and other study materials that are available anytime, anywhere.

You will undertake assignments within small groups and we provide training in communication skills relevant for scientific communication. The course aims to foster your ability to work at a professional standard both individually and as part of a team.

Learning Environment

The technical facilities at Northumbria University are excellent. We are fully equipped for molecular biology manipulations and imaging – techniques include RT-PCR to show whether or not a specific gene is being expressed in a given sample. We also have pilot scale bioreactors so that we can scale up experiments and processes.

For cell biology and immunology, we have two multi-user laboratories. Technologies include assays for measuring immune responses at the single-cell level, and for monitoring the functioning of cells in real time. Further capabilities include biomarker analysis, flow cytometry, chemical imaging and fluorescence microscopy. For genomics, proteomics and metabolomics, our capabilities include genomic sequencing, mass spectrometry, 2D protein electrophoresis and nanoflow liquid chromatography.

All our equipment is supported up by highly skilled technical staff who will help you make the best use of all the facilities that are available.

Research-Rich Learning

In fast-moving fields like biotechnology, it’s particularly important for teaching to take account of the latest research. Many of our staff are conducting research in areas such as molecular biology, bio-informatics, gene expression and micro-biology of extreme environments. They bring all this experience and expertise into their teaching.

As a student, you will be heavily engaged in analysing recent insights from the scientific literature. You will undertake a major individual project in molecular and cellular science that will encompass all aspects of a scientific study. These include evaluation of relevant literature, design and set-up of experiments, collection and processing of data, analysis of results, preparation of a report and presentation of findings in a seminar.

Following the rise of importance in the use of Building Information Modelling (BIM) within the Built Environment professions Northumbria University established the BIM Academy with Ryder Architecture – one of the leading Architecture firms in the country. BIM will transform the Built Environment. By sharing information between Design Team (architects, surveyors, consulting engineers), Contractors and Subcontractors, and Owners, it can add additional discipline-specific knowledge to one single model, meaning significant reduction in information loss, and a more efficient, accurate construction process and improved maintenance and repair of buildings.

One of the key challenges facing any student planning to undertake a business-related degree is how to compete in the job market with business graduates around the world who are also trying to ignite their business career. We know from experience and talking to employers that international awareness is a key differentiator. Many of our students have already taken the first step by travelling hundreds or thousands of miles to study in an unfamiliar environment. However the international exchange option takes that to the next level. We are developing exchange opportunities in Asia, Europe and South America that will give students the opportunity to create a truly unique selling proposition to future employers. Students spend one semester studying business (taught and assessed in English) in another international domain. A further module, ‘Academic and Professional Development’, has a specific focus on self-development. It includes formal sessions with our Careers and Employment Service which offers a range of workshops, one-to-one advice, and networking opportunities.

To further enhance your employability, we offer the opportunity to undertake a master’s consultancy project as an alternative to the traditional dissertation. You’ll work in a small group, typically no more than five people, and tackle a live project from a host organisation under the mentorship of a member of our academic team. The project can be an excellent vehicle for you to relate theory to practice while developing key employability skills.

What will I study?

As part of our ‘Business with’ collection of programmes, the MSc Business with Financial Management is designed to give you an overall understanding of the inner mechanics of business, whilst building the general skills desired for a wide variety of roles and growing your business acumen. It is also your chance to focus in on financial management and perfect if you are looking to develop your understanding of a fundamental aspect in all businesses.

The programme is designed around a set of modules that are common to all ‘Business with’ pathways. These modules cover general business functions, strategic management and organisational analysis and will develop your strategic awareness, leadership potential and understanding of international business.

In the second semester you will be given the opportunity to specialise in Financial Management. In the remainder of the programme you will complete your research and writing up of your dissertation. Every student has a personal research supervisor and will be required to submit an assessed research proposal prior to embarking on the dissertation itself.

There is also an internship opportunity for an additional fee of £595, payable to our internship provider. Alternatively, if you would like to include a work placement during your programme, this is included in our MSc Business with Financial Management with Advanced Practice. The work placement may be paid or unpaid.

How will I be taught and assessed?

Specialist modules cover corporate financial management and international financial markets and institutions. Your studies will give you a theoretical understanding and analytical skills that will help you succeed in the competitive, rewarding environment of finance and business.

In the second year of this course you’ll undertake an internship or further consultancy project. The course fee is divided evenly between year 1 and year 2. In addition, while you can only work twenty hours per week during term time, you can use the extra vacation periods to travel or work full time and help fund your time in the UK.

There is no requirement to have studied business or finance at undergraduate level.

Your tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including lectures, seminars and workshops. As this is a master’s course there is a major element of independent learning and self-motivated reflection.

During the second year you’ll undertake an internship or consultancy project for a whole semester. These can be related to any business and management discipline, given the generic content of this Masters programme . Research-Rich Learning

As a master’s student you’ll develop your research skills to a new and higher level. Your research supervisor will help you submit a proposal for your master’s dissertation or consultancy project and then discuss its development through to completion in the final semester.

If you decide on a master’s consultancy project, rather than a dissertation, you’ll still undertake primary and desk research. Through your reading, reflection and research, you’ll be expected to show a deep understanding of the issues that are involved in the client brief.

For those not undertaking an internship, you will complete your consultancy project.

Advanced Practice stage

This stage of your programme offers you the opportunity to secure a 12-15 week internship, or complete a group consultancy project, giving you experience of the workplace environment or live business issues, both an excellent way to put your learning in to practice.

This stage of the MSc Business with Financial Management with Advanced Practice takes place between your second and final semesters and lasts one semester (15 weeks) in duration.

The full duration of your programme depends on your start date:
-September start dates: your programme will last up to 22 months. You will have a summer break after Semester 2, and commence your Advanced Practice stage in September.
-January start dates: your programme will run for 16-18 months. There is no summer break included in this programme for those starting in January. Your Advanced Practice stage will commence in September.
-May start dates: your programme will run for 16-18 months. There is no summer break included in this programme for those starting in May. Your Advanced Practice stage will commence in January.

Internships

If you undertake an internship as your Advanced Practice stage, it may be paid or unpaid, and will last 12-15 weeks. The internship can be sourced by students or the University. We will support you in the application process and equip you with the necessary internship application and selection skills (e.g. CV writing, interview techniques etc). All internships will be approved by the University to ensure that they offer you an appropriate learning experience and working environment. During your internship, you will be allocated an internship tutor who will visit you during your internship and support you in completing the internship assessment.

The module is assessed by a reflective portfolio which is focused on your development via this employment opportunity.

Consultancy project

The alternative consultancy module allows you to work in teams with a business organisation, working on a consultancy-based projects for real business scenarios.

How will I be taught and assessed?

You will be taught through a mix of lectures, seminars and workshops to enable you to grow your knowledge of the business world. You will also be expected to engage in further independent study, involving directed and self-directed learning, to further build your knowledge.

Significant emphasis is placed on developing your ability to complete a Masters degree. As part of your induction you will be made fully familiar with the learning resources and support available to you. There will also be weekly academic support sessions designed to build your confidence and ability as a postgraduate learner. You will also be allocated an individual guidance tutor at induction. You will meet this tutor at regular intervals across your period of study.

Assessment for this programme takes place through group work, assignments and presentations giving you multiple methods for you to show your understanding of the course material.
