We currently offer the opportunity to gain a postgraduate degree by research at the level of MSc, MPhil or DPhil (PhD). Study can be on either a full-time or a part-time basis. The minimum periods of study for achieving these research degrees are as follows:

• MSc – 1 year full-time or 2 years part-time
• MPhil – 2 years full-time or 4 years part-time
• DPhil – 3 years full-time or 6 years part-time (this is our equivalent term for a PhD)

The Psychology Department fosters a culture of collaborative, multidisciplinary research, and you will join a vibrant community that includes regular work-in-progress seminars to foster an active research environment. You will join one of our four research hubs described below, all of which are engaged in inter-institutional collaborations, including some with non-academic partners such as health-care providers and music conservatoires.

Our Research Hubs

‘CREATE’ (Centre for Research into Expertise Acquisition, Training and Excellence)

The main focus of the centre is the exploration of the drivers of excellence in performance (whether cognitive, creative or practice-based). We welcome applications from potential MSc and DPhil candidates across a wide range of related topic areas, including:

• Insight and creativity
• The drivers of performance excellence and expertise development (e.g. in music, theatre, puzzle-solving, board-games and medicine)
• Hobbies, motivations and characteristics of niche populations
• Music psychology
• Time perception and those with ‘natural’ time-keeping abilities

We have a number of external collaborative projects in the areas of creativity and performance, and also work with internal colleagues in Applied Computing and the University of Buckingham Medical School.

Centre for Health and Relationship Research

The main aim of the hub is to study the impact of the interpersonal world and support structures on health and well-being in clinical and non-clinical settings. This overarching focus has led to the study of topic areas such as:

• Prevalence, impact of and psychosocial challenges facing people following spinal cord injury
• Biopsychosocial understanding of pain and developing interventions for successful pain management
• Social norms as a predictor of health behaviours in young people
• Social factors affecting uptake of health behaviours
• The role of social support in living well with chronic conditions

Together, these projects represent a body of work which seeks to fight patient isolation and to understand health experiences in the context of a social world. The hub aims to identify methods for supporting patients as they live with long-term conditions, including through developing interventions, assessment techniques and knowledge dissemination. With connections and active research work taking part at four local NHS hospitals, we can offer excellent opportunities for research studies with tangible impact.

Emotion and Life-Span Relationships

The Emotion and Life-Span Relationships hub offers diverse research opportunities including:

• Cyberpsychology and Cyberbullying, including online gaming
• Cyber versus real world behaviour
• Social inference and emotion regulation
• Interpersonal relationships, including dating, rejection, relationship maintenance and break down
• Mental resilience and its relationship to social support

Psychology of Educational Development

In this hub, we study the cognitive processes, behavioural issues and developmental factors that affect learning, and how learning environments and individual differences influence educational outcomes. With a focus on the resilience, creativity and happiness of learners, as well as on Specific Learning Difficulties which might impact upon academic performance, we welcome applicants to study a wide range of topics with us, including:

This programme of study aims to train first-degree holders in computing-related areas into specialists in selected areas of IT and computing. Based on the current expertise in the Department, the programme offers students opportunities for in-depth study in secure mobile and wireless communication systems, biometrics and authentication, data mining and knowledge discovery, and Software Project Management techniques and applications.

The programme is carefully designed to suit the varied needs of different students from different backgrounds and with different career objectives, in the IT fields.

On graduating from this programme, you will be able to:

- Understand a range of modern computing technologies
- Apply these technologies in practice
- Describe the roles that modern computing technologies have in many areas of application

Duration

The programme lasts for 18-month over 6 terms. It consists of 8 taught modules and an individual project totalling 195 units of credit. You can start the course in September, January or April each year.

Teaching methods

Our modules include a mixture of formal lectures, tutorial classes and practical classes. At the start of each module you will be given an up-to-date module outline and reading list. Most modules will provide two or three hours of lectures each week to introduce you to the basic concepts and techniques. These will be supported by lecture notes or handouts.

Lectures are supported by weekly tutorial classes, usually one hour in length, which are held in small groups so that all students can benefit from individual attention. You will be expected to prepare for these classes, for example by attempting a set of exercises or by reading a case study.

Many of our modules have supervised practical classes in the computer laboratories in which you can apply and practise the techniques you have learnt in the lectures. These practical sessions are usually two or three hours long.

You will also be expected to study on your own, using the library for reading research and the computer laboratories to improve your practical skills.

Course material is also available on the University’s own Virtual Learning Environment. This allows students to download lecture notes, submit assignments and share resources in an electronic forum both within the University’s computer network and remotely.

After your degree

The increasing specialisation which is frequently required in the employment market is no longer provided by just an undergraduate degree. A postgraduate degree provides these advanced skills and, in today’s competitive employment market, is becoming increasingly important in order to stand out from the crowd.

Any successful career choice in the market place will be dependent on a number of factors. Your academic qualification, while important, may not be the deciding factor. The academic staff in the Applied Computing Department (ACD) are all engaged in research and publications. Considering its modest size, ACD has successfully attracted research funding from various sources in the UK and the EU, including industry, research councils, HEA and EU framework projects such as FP6. Furthermore, ACD has been working and collaborating with many European research institutions.

For the academic year 2012-2013, 2 DPhil and 6 MSc students (1 in Mathematics) have graduated, four of whom graduated with Distinction. The 2 DPhil students have made it for the March graduation and we expect to have 3 or 4 more completing their DPhil research programmes for the next graduation. One of our new MPhil/DPhil students in Computing joined the Department last October, and 3 other MPhil/DPhil students have joined us since. Over the last few years, the number of research students in ACD has grown steadily to (currently) 29 PhD and 2 Master’s research students.

We have had over 20 refereed conference and journal papers published during the last 12 months, and two of the papers have been awarded best paper awards.

ACD supports diverse research topics addressing varied applied computing technologies such as:

- Image processing and pattern recognition with applications in biometric-based person identification, image super-resolution, digital watermarking and steganography, content-based image / video indexing and retrieval, biomedical image analysis.
- Multi-factor authentication and security algorithms.
- Wireless networks technologies (Multi-frequency Software-Defined / Cognitive Radios, convergence and integration of different wireless technologies and standards such as WiFi and WiMax, IPv4 and IPv6, wireless mesh technologies, intrusion detection and prevention, efficiency and stability of ad hoc networks).
- Hybrid navigation and localisation integrations for mobile handsets, including using Cellular and WiFi in conjunction with GPS and Glonass for seamless positioning indoors, Multiplexed receive chain of GPS/Glonass with on-board handset Bluetooth/WiFi, GNSS signals multiplexing for real time simulation.
- Cloud computing, including the readiness of mobile operating systems for cloud services and focusing on techniques for fast computing handovers, efficient virtualisation and optimised security algorithms.
- Data mining techniques, including database systems, the application of data mining techniques in image and biological data, human-computer interaction and visual languages.
- Research and development of Apps for mobile devices and smart TVs, particularly for application in the areas of education and healthcare.
- Differential geometry – Einstein metrics, quasi-Einstein metrics, Ricci solitons, numerical methods in differential geometry.

Teaching methods

Teaching across our postgraduate programmes is through a combination of formal lectures, tutorials and seminars. Our lectures aim to encourage healthy dialogue between faculty and students, and between students themselves, while our small tutorial groups ensure that students can engage even more closely with their teachers. Members of the Business School faculty also make a point of being available to students outside the scheduled teaching sessions – something which our postgraduate students find particularly valuable.

We frequently use case studies to examine business decisions taken in real situations, and business simulations and games give you first-hand experience of decision-making in the world of work. Role-play and group problem-solving exercises help you to apply some of the theoretical concepts delivered in lectures and you will have the opportunity to undertake individual or group projects with local companies on topical business issues.

Overview

Bridging the gap between medicine and psychology, the course focuses on understanding the behavioural processes around health and sickness. This programme will allow students to develop the knowledge and skills necessary for research and practice as a Health Psychologist. The programme covers a wide-range of approaches, from advanced research methods, through to a working and evidence-based knowledge of theory and behaviour change interventions.

Much like our undergraduate programme, this course will adopt a personalised teaching style built on creating relationships between students and staff. All modules use a tutorial style of teaching, in which students are taught weekly in groups of 7 or fewer, allowing for regular quality contact time with your lecturer. It is through this method that students can achieve excellence in their qualification in a supportive environment. 

 Over the course of the programme, you will develop a strong knowledge base and skill-set appropriate for professional practice in Health Psychology. You’ll learn to analyse, debate, discuss and devise behaviour change interventions for use in primary, secondary and community care. We encourage autonomy in design and analysis of research, allowing you to develop your skills towards becoming an independent researcher, with an increased awareness of the practical reality of working with short- and long-term health conditions.

 This is a one year, full-time programme accepting students in both September and January. If you plan to start your own business, work for a start-up or develop a career as a consultant to growing businesses, then you should seriously consider our new Master’s programme. This innovative one-year MSc in Entrepreneurial Consultancy and Practice (MECP) has been designed, with support from KPMG Enterprise, to develop your entrepreneurial skills, attitudes and behaviour. This will be achieved by providing opportunities for you to combine theoretical studies in entrepreneurship and business and with real work experience as junior business consultants.

You will be working with a range of entrepreneurs, helping them to develop and grow their innovative businesses by identifying, researching and resolving the problems faced by most start-up businesses as they grow.

As you will be representing the University of Buckingham and KPMG Enterprise in your external work, you will spend your first term developing your entrepreneurship and business knowledge and learning how to work as a member of a consultancy team. In your second term you will work on two consultancy projects. This will be followed by two more complex projects in your third term. During your final term you and your team must complete a major consultancy project for a larger growth business.

Prior to starting any consultancy projects you will take two introductory modules in the first term, ‘Overview of Business Functions’ and ‘Consulting for Level 1 Projects’, to ensure that you are well prepared for your initial consultancy projects.

To prepare you for increasingly difficult projects, you will be taught two additional modules (‘Consulting for Levels 2 and 3 Projects’) in each of the following two terms and these will further develop your skills and knowledge.

To ensure that you will be well prepared for your roles as junior business consultants, KPMG Enterprise has agreed to:

- Facilitate a number of classroom-based sessions as part of the four training modules, including a session explaining to you how you would be expected to ‘behave / act’ in a place of work, in particular in a scenario where you may be seconded to work for a client.

The MSc programme in Money, Banking and Central Banking is designed to offer specialised teaching in banking and financial markets which is particularly relevant given all the changes introduced during the last global financial crisis, as well as the changes made by major central banks in the running of their monetary policies since then.

Monetary analysis has been mainly disregarded in the years running up to The Global Financial Crisis and this contributed to high rates of growth of money which ultimately led to unsustainable economic growth and financial instability. Unlike any other degree in the UK ours emphasises the importance of high quality monetary and banking analysis so we can assess those policies compatible with stable economic growth and financial stability over the long term. Expert knowledge of monetary economics and monetary policy, risk management and financial institutions is going to be of crucial important to understand the world after the recent crisis.

The degree will provide the latest research methods and tools to teach students to think analytically and critically, and apply their knowledge to practical problems faced by investment banks and central banks and other financial institutions.

In particular the students will be able to get the Associate Professional Risk Manager Certificate (Associate PRM Certificate), which is a PRMIA programme offered online for staff entering the risk management industry.

The programme covers fundamental concepts of the risk management profession and has become a well-known benchmark in this market both in the UK and in the rest of the world. The materials for preparing for the exams are fully available on the PRMIA’s website and include scheduled readings and webinars series. In addition, the teaching staff of our master’s programme will offer extra academic support to the students willing to take the exam.

This programme of study aims to train first-degree holders in computing-related areas into specialists in selected areas of IT and computing. Based on the current expertise in the Department, the programme offers students opportunities for in-depth study in:

- Biometrics and authentication
- Data mining and knowledge discovery
- Imaging techniques and applications

The programme is carefully designed to suit the varied needs of different students from different backgrounds and with different career objectives.

Communications using mobile and wireless devices such as mobile phones, PDA s and laptops have become increasingly important in modern life and electronic commerce. Reliable, speedy and secure transmission of information over such devices is vital for the successful exploitation of the technologies.

Authentication, using biometric data as a sophisticated means to combat fraud, is increasingly accepted by both businesses and governments. Biometric authentication solutions require good use of imaging and data mining techniques in constructing and verifying customer profiles. Online organisations have accumulated large collections of online data that need speedy processing and analysis. If you are interested in finding out more about any of these technologies, then this programme is for you.

Teaching methods

Our modules include a mixture of formal lectures, tutorial classes and practical classes. At the start of each module you will be given an up-to-date module outline and reading list. Most modules will provide two or three hours of lectures each week to introduce you to the basic concepts and techniques. These will be supported by lecture notes or handouts.

Lectures are supported by weekly tutorial classes, usually one hour in length, which are held in small groups so that all students can benefit from individual attention. You will be expected to prepare for these classes, for example by attempting a set of exercises or by reading a case study.

Many of our modules have supervised practical classes in the computer laboratories in which you can apply and practise the techniques you have learnt in the lectures. These practical sessions are usually two or three hours long.

You will also be expected to study on your own, using the library for reading research and the computer laboratories to improve your practical skills.

Course material is also available on the University’s own Virtual Learning Environment. This allows students to download lecture notes, submit assignments and share resources in an electronic forum both within the University’s computer network and remotely.

After your degree

The increasing specialisation which is frequently required in the employment market is no longer provided by just an undergraduate degree. A postgraduate degree provides these advanced skills and, in today’s competitive employment market, is becoming increasingly important in order to stand out from the crowd.

Any successful career choice in the market place will be dependent on a number of factors. Your academic qualification, while important, may not be the deciding factor. The MSc Management in a Service Economy aims to equip graduates with the ability to create and deliver reliable customer centred service - a key differentiator for business today. In many industries, profit margins on product sales have shrunk enormously, leading to an increased focus on generating profits through value-added services. Thus, the best firms now bundle customer-centred service with a manufactured product and create service centred solutions. Some, like IBM have moved completely to service and solutions.

Service Management as a body of knowledge has made immense progress in the last decade. Economies are more and more service-focused and it has become imperative to study all aspects of managing service. Teaching Method

Teaching across our postgraduate programmes is through a combination of formal lectures, tutorials and seminars. Our lectures aim to encourage healthy dialogue between faculty and students, and between students themselves, while our small tutorial groups ensure that students can engage even more closely with their teachers. Members of the Business School faculty also make a point of being available to students outside the scheduled teaching sessions – something which our postgraduate students find particularly valuable.

We frequently use case studies to examine business decisions taken in real situations, and business simulations and games give you first-hand experience of decision making in the world of work. Role-play and group problem-solving exercises help you to apply some of the theoretical concepts delivered in lectures and you will have the opportunity to undertake individual or group projects with local companies on topical business issues.
