At present, we offer the opportunity to gain a postgraduate degree by research at MSc, MPhil or DPhil level. Study can be on either a full-time or a part-time basis. The minimum periods of study for achieving these research degrees are as follows:

Music Psychology

- Expertise in sight-singing music:
- Expertise in any domain requires practice and involves the use of specific cognitive strategies. Research on sight-singing has suggested a number of factors involved in pitching sung notes, such as memory, reading intervals, the presence of other musical lines, and an understanding of tonality. This project would extend the existing research by carrying out a number of experiments on expert and less expert singers. (Note: this project could be extended to instrumental sight-reading.)
- Sung text intelligibility:
- A great deal of music is sung, and an important aspect of perceiving sung music is the extent to which the words can be understood. There are no doubt differences between understanding speech and sung words. This project would investigate a number of factors thought to affect the intelligibility of sung text, based on a previous exploratory survey questionnaire study, in a set of controlled experiments.

Cognition and Perception

- Expertise and strategies in cryptic crossword completion:
- Expertise in any domain requires practice and involves the use of specific cognitive strategies. An exploratory survey of expert cryptic crossword solvers has shed light on their solving habits and the role of motivation, but not really tackled the cognitive strategies involved. This project would investigate the cognitive aspects of cryptic crossword solving in experts, including looking at the role of group work when people solve crosswords together. Methods would include controlled experiments on anagram solving, clue recognition and solving, and completing part-answered clues, as well as the use of online verbal protocols during crossword solving.

The Master of Science (MSc) is available as a research degree. Candidates seeking the degree on the basis of research undertake one year of supervised research on a topic with an area for which the first degree would be the degree of Bachelor of Science (two years if they are studying part-time), at the end of which they submit a thesis embodying the results of their research. This research must demonstrate familiarity with, and an understanding of the subject, its principal sources and authorities. It should display critical discrimination and a sense of proportion in evaluating evidence and the judgements of others. The subject should be dealt with in a competent and scholarly manner. Candidates who are awarded the degree of MSc will have demonstrated their ability to conduct independent research using a range of primary and/or secondary sources and to present this in an organised, coherent and scholarly manner. Candidates for the degree of MSc must already hold a good honours degree or the equivalent. The MSc in Accounting and Finance is designed for managers of the future who recognise the need for businesses to service a wider range of stakeholders. The course consists of a rigorous and intellectually demanding study of the ‘core’ disciplines of Financial Reporting, Corporate Finance, Corporate Governance, Research Methods, Strategic Management Accounting and Auditing together with a wide range of options. The foundation module Corporate Governance looks at the fundamental relation between shareholders and stockholders and explores topical issues of accountability, transparency, corporate social responsibility and environmental responsibility to prepare you for the study of Accounting and Finance from a wider societal perspective. We frequently use case studies to examine business decisions taken in real situations, and business simulations and games give you first-hand experience of decision making in the world of work. Role-play and group problem-solving exercises help you to apply some of the theoretical concepts delivered in lectures and you will have the opportunity to undertake individual or group projects with local companies on topical business issues.

Dissertation

The student will take responsibility for the design, execution, analysis and reporting of an in-depth study on a topic relevant to the course. Based on previous study in this programme the student will:

- Demonstrate in-depth knowledge and understanding of a relevant area of accounting and finance (theoretical, conceptual and / or practical).
- Show an ability to select and justify appropriate research methods for a given subject of study.
- Provide evidence of familiarity with the current academic and practitioner debates.
- Demonstrate an ability to critically analyse and evaluate data independently and engage in debates relevant to the area of study.
- Demonstrate the development of coherent and sustained arguments leading to logical conclusions or recommendations.

There will be a supervisor assigned to each student. Individual consultations and regular feedback provide the framework and guidance for dissertation planning and writing. The individual work will comprise of proposing a topic and theoretical framework, undertaking a literary review, presenting methodology and data, discussing findings and then formatting and presenting a final dissertation. Duration

The programme lasts for 18-month over 6 terms. It consists of 8 taught modules and an individual project totalling 195 units of credit. You can start the course in September, January or April each year.

Teaching methods

Our modules include a mixture of formal lectures, tutorial classes and practical classes. At the start of each module you will be given an up-to-date module outline and reading list. Most modules will provide two or three hours of lectures each week to introduce you to the basic concepts and techniques. These will be supported by lecture notes or handouts.

Lectures are supported by weekly tutorial classes, usually one hour in length, which are held in small groups so that all students can benefit from individual attention. You will be expected to prepare for these classes, for example by attempting a set of exercises or by reading a case study.

Many of our modules have supervised practical classes in the computer laboratories in which you can apply and practise the techniques you have learnt in the lectures. These practical sessions are usually two or three hours long.

You will also be expected to study on your own, using the library for reading research and the computer laboratories to improve your practical skills.

Course material is also available on the University’s own Virtual Learning Environment. This allows students to download lecture notes, submit assignments and share resources in an electronic forum both within the University’s computer network and remotely.

Demand for multi-skilled graduates is growing as industry, academia and the public sector increasingly respond to advances in genome biology and this programme provides the relevant skills to meet this need. With the completion of the human genome project, we are faced with a revolution in our understanding of complex biological systems and in the treatment of disease. The ability to efficiently manage and interrogate the wealth of DNA sequence information requires a combination of computational methodologies and molecular genetic expertise. Qualified physicians wishing to gain hands-on, cutting edge laboratory experience in areas of unmet clinical need can spend a year in the University’s Clore Laboratory prior to joining the MD programme working towards an MSc in Clinical Science. This is a research degree for which you will submit a thesis and be examined by viva voce.

We have interest in a number of areas, including: fetal programming of obesity and diabetes, mechanisms of insulin sensitisation, pancreatic islet cell biology, regulation of energy expenditure, biomedical imaging, bioinformatics and cutaneous pathogenesis. Some recently completed MSc research includes:

- Mechanisms of pancreatic islet neogenesis
- Restoration of β-cell function using thiazolidinediones
- Use of RNAi technology to investigate mechanisms of insulin signalling in pancreatic islet s

A variety of projects are available in these and other areas.

Supported by postdoctoral scientists, you will gain valuable experience in a range of techniques in molecular and cellular biology while being fully-integrated into a research environment. The academic staff in the Applied Computing Department (ACD) are all engaged in research and publications. Considering its modest size, ACD has successfully attracted research funding from various sources in the UK and the EU, including industry, research councils, HEA and EU framework projects such as FP6. Furthermore, ACD has been working and collaborating with many European research institutions.

For the academic year 2012-2013, 2 DPhil and 6 MSc students (1 in Mathematics) have graduated, four of whom graduated with Distinction. The 2 DPhil students have made it for the March graduation and we expect to have 3 or 4 more completing their DPhil research programmes for the next graduation. One of our new MPhil/DPhil students in Computing joined the Department last October, and 3 other MPhil/DPhil students have joined us since. Over the last few years, the number of research students in ACD has grown steadily to (currently) 29 PhD and 2 Master’s research students.

We have had over 20 refereed conference and journal papers published during the last 12 months, and two of the papers have been awarded best paper awards.

ACD supports diverse research topics addressing varied applied computing technologies such as:

- Image processing and pattern recognition with applications in biometric-based person identification, image super-resolution, digital watermarking and steganography, content-based image / video indexing and retrieval, biomedical image analysis.
- Multi-factor authentication and security algorithms.
- Wireless networks technologies (Multi-frequency Software-Defined / Cognitive Radios, convergence and integration of different wireless technologies and standards such as WiFi and WiMax, IPv4 and IPv6, wireless mesh technologies, intrusion detection and prevention, efficiency and stability of ad hoc networks).
- Hybrid navigation and localisation integrations for mobile handsets, including using Cellular and WiFi in conjunction with GPS and Glonass for seamless positioning indoors, Multiplexed receive chain of GPS/Glonass with on-board handset Bluetooth/WiFi, GNSS signals multiplexing for real time simulation.
- Cloud computing, including the readiness of mobile operating systems for cloud services and focusing on techniques for fast computing handovers, efficient virtualisation and optimised security algorithms.
- Data mining techniques, including database systems, the application of data mining techniques in image and biological data, human-computer interaction and visual languages.
- Research and development of Apps for mobile devices and smart TVs, particularly for application in the areas of education and healthcare.
- Differential geometry – Einstein metrics, quasi-Einstein metrics, Ricci solitons, numerical methods in differential geometry.

If you plan to start your own business, work for a start-up or develop a career as a consultant to growing businesses, then you should seriously consider our new Master’s programme. This innovative one-year MSc in Entrepreneurial Consultancy and Practice (MECP) has been designed, with support from KPMG Enterprise, to develop your entrepreneurial skills, attitudes and behaviour. This will be achieved by providing opportunities for you to combine theoretical studies in entrepreneurship and business and with real work experience as junior business consultants.

You will be working with a range of entrepreneurs, helping them to develop and grow their innovative businesses by identifying, researching and resolving the problems faced by most start-up businesses as they grow.

As you will be representing the University of Buckingham and KPMG Enterprise in your external work, you will spend your first term developing your entrepreneurship and business knowledge and learning how to work as a member of a consultancy team. In your second term you will work on two consultancy projects. This will be followed by two more complex projects in your third term. During your final term you and your team must complete a major consultancy project for a larger growth business.

You will also be given a chance to develop your own business ideas, working in teams during the first term, and at the end of the term you will ‘pitch’ the idea you have developed to our ‘Buckingham Angels’ venture capital panel.

Monetary analysis has been mainly disregarded in the years running up to The Global Financial Crisis and this contributed to high rates of growth of money which ultimately led to unsustainable economic growth and financial instability. Unlike any other degree in the UK ours emphasises the importance of high quality monetary and banking analysis so we can assess those policies compatible with stable economic growth and financial stability over the long term. Expert knowledge of monetary economics and monetary policy, risk management and financial institutions is going to be of crucial important to understand the world after the recent crisis.

The bulk of the programme will consist of several modules providing the theoretical and analytical tools for the students to understand central bank operations and policies, as well as banking business, so they can identify how money is created in modern economies and analyse how changes in the amount of money affect overall prices as well as the running of the economy along the cycle. Students will also learn the statistical techniques and use specialised software to gather and analyse macroeconomic and financial data. At the end of the programme students will submit a master’s dissertation.

We offer two entry points, in September and January. We also offer a part-time programme for those professionals already working and looking forward to furthering their education and careers in money and banking.

Professional accreditation in risk management

Students will be offered the option to take an examination and get the Professional Risk Managers’ International Association (PRMIA) accreditation in financial risk management. In particular the students will be able to get the Associate Professional Risk Manager Certificate (Associate PRM Certificate), which is a PRMIA programme offered online for staff entering the risk management industry.

The programme covers fundamental concepts of the risk management profession and has become a well-known benchmark in this market both in the UK and in the rest of the world. The materials for preparing for the exams are fully available on the PRMIA’s website and include scheduled readings and webinars series. In addition, the teaching staff of our master’s programme will offer extra academic support to the students willing to take the exam.

This programme of study aims to train first-degree holders in computing-related areas into specialists in selected areas of IT and computing. Based on the current expertise in the Department, the programme offers students opportunities for in-depth study in:

- Biometrics and authentication

- Imaging techniques and applications

The programme is carefully designed to suit the varied needs of different students from different backgrounds and with different career objectives.

Communications using mobile and wireless devices such as mobile phones, PDA s and laptops have become increasingly important in modern life and electronic commerce. Reliable, speedy and secure transmission of information over such devices is vital for the successful exploitation of the technologies.

Authentication, using biometric data as a sophisticated means to combat fraud, is increasingly accepted by both businesses and governments. Biometric authentication solutions require good use of imaging and data mining techniques in constructing and verifying customer profiles. Online organisations have accumulated large collections of online data that need speedy processing and analysis. If you are interested in finding out more about any of these technologies, then this programme is for you.

Teaching methods

Our modules include a mixture of formal lectures, tutorial classes and practical classes. At the start of each module you will be given an up-to-date module outline and reading list. Most modules will provide two or three hours of lectures each week to introduce you to the basic concepts and techniques. These will be supported by lecture notes or handouts.

Lectures are supported by weekly tutorial classes, usually one hour in length, which are held in small groups so that all students can benefit from individual attention. You will be expected to prepare for these classes, for example by attempting a set of exercises or by reading a case study.

Many of our modules have supervised practical classes in the computer laboratories in which you can apply and practise the techniques you have learnt in the lectures. These practical sessions are usually two or three hours long.

You will also be expected to study on your own, using the library for reading research and the computer laboratories to improve your practical skills.

Course material is also available on the University’s own Virtual Learning Environment. This allows students to download lecture notes, submit assignments and share resources in an electronic forum both within the University’s computer network and remotely.

After your degree

The increasing specialisation which is frequently required in the employment market is no longer provided by just an undergraduate degree. A postgraduate degree provides these advanced skills and, in today’s competitive employment market, is becoming increasingly important in order to stand out from the crowd.

Teaching Method

Teaching across our postgraduate programmes is through a combination of formal lectures, tutorials and seminars. Our lectures aim to encourage healthy dialogue between faculty and students, and between students themselves, while our small tutorial groups ensure that students can engage even more closely with their teachers. Members of the Business School faculty also make a point of being available to students outside the scheduled teaching sessions – something which our postgraduate students find particularly valuable.

We frequently use case studies to examine business decisions taken in real situations, and business simulations and games give you first-hand experience of decision making in the world of work. Role-play and group problem-solving exercises help you to apply some of the theoretical concepts delivered in lectures and you will have the opportunity to undertake individual or group projects with local companies on topical business issues.
