It will provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the development of biotherapeutics, beginning with pre-clinical modelling and target identification together with antibody engineering, biochemical and biophysical characterisation, and development issues for bioprocessing. Systems biology of biotechnological processes and approaches to the analysis of proteomics-based discovery data will be covered in detail together with mathematical modelling, bioinformatics analysis and data integration strategies. Regulatory issues, and innovation and commercialisation strategies, will also be covered. Mammalian cell culture and bioprocess laboratory structure will be comprehensively covered in addition to novel approaches to therapeutic development. The climate of the planet has changed tremendously over the last few decades, leading to excessive flooding, forest fires and rising global temperatures and having various impacts on our planet and society. It is crucial to study the causes of climate change and understand the impacts in different sectors in order to prepare us for any natural hazards or extreme changes that can be predicted and incorporate climate change into future sustainable development. This MSc programme has two strands:

1) Climate science and simulation

2) Climate change and impacts

On completion of the programme students should be able to critically understand climate change science and impacts, and creatively apply the knowledge in solving real-world problems. Crime and punishment are issues of central importance to society and by bringing academic rigour to their examination the UCD Institute of Criminology contributes to the achievement of national priorities. The Institute brings together leading academics from across UCD and is the only centre of its kind in Ireland. Its members have conducted major research projects on a wide range of topics in the field of criminology and criminal justice, including work on coercive confinement, prison violence and desistance from crime. The work of the Institute has been the focus of debates in parliament, legislative and policy initiatives and numerous reports in the media.

Studying abroad

The School affords its students the opportunity to spend a semester abroad as part of the Comparative, International and European Law (CIEL) Graduate exchange programme with our partner Universities in Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands and Spain. Students participating in the programme will have their dissertations jointly supervised by staff in UCD and in the institution which

The MSc Actuarial Science is a one year full-time programme from September to the following August. Semesters 1 and 2, from September to May, cover the Core Technical subjects 1 to 8 (CT 1-8) and subject Core Applications 1 (CA1) of the examinations of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (UK). Depending on your background and subject to the approval of the programme director, you may select between five and eight subjects to study. The Core Technical subjects are as follows:


Financial Mathematics (CT1)
Finance & Financial Reporting (CT2)
Probability and Mathematical Statistics (CT3)
Models (CT4)
Contingencies (CT5)
Statistical Methods (CT6)
Business Economics (CT7)
Financial Economics (CT8)


In semester 3 you will undertake independent research in an area of actuarial science under the supervision of a member of the School of Mathematical Sciences with the aim of submitting a thesis on your research findings at the end of the semester. Depending on your subject choices in semesters 1 and 2 you may also undertake advanced modules in finance at the UCD Smurfit School of Business – the modules offered will vary from year to year but possible topics may include regulation, corporate governance, ethics in finance, asset valuation, and financial management.

This programme runs for one year or 3 semesters.

Programme structure
The learning process includes lectures as well as both group and individual project work. Students work individually on computer programming assignments, while other systems projects and the dissertation are completed as group projects with regular presentations.

Dissertation projects, presented in September, involve full-time work on a real management problem, generally with an Irish company. They should be mathematically complex with a computer-programming element.
