You’ll secure your internship with a company of your choice (with the assistance of our internal job board), and a faculty member will oversee the internship so that you’ll gain a hands-on practical understanding and an academic one – something that looks good on any résumé. Internships in France are paid; this will vary from country to country, depending on local laws.

The Nanoscale Engineering master is a two-year program corresponding to 120 ECTS credits. Students receive a universal and profound training in physics, materials science and electronics at the nanoscale, but also in nanobiotechnology.

Elective courses can be followed by the students in their desired area of specialization and/or to broaden their horizons. The entire curriculum is taught in English.

A key educational concept of the program is that each student is immersed in a high-quality research environment for at least half of the time in the curriculum. Throughout the academic year, lab practicals and projects are carried out in research institutions that participate in the program, and thesis projects are undertaken in research laboratories or in nanotechnology companies.

In addition to the scientific and technological aspects, ethical issues and the societal impact of nanotechnology, as well as business considerations, are addressed in specialized seminars and courses.

Structure of the Curriculum

First Year (60 ECTS)

The major part of semester 1 is dedicated to lectures: The students follow 7 courses from the core modules and 2 elective modules. Laboratory practicals and mini-projects ensure a smooth transition into semester 2 with its four-month internship in a research group. This internship is prepared in semester 1 already with a dedicated literature survey. Seminars of speakers from both academia and industry complement the educational program throughout the entire first year.

Second Year (60 ECTS)

Semester 3 is again dedicated to lectures, featuring 5 slots for core modules and 3 for electives, as well as some ancillary courses. The entirety of semester 4 is taken up by the six-month Master thesis project, which can be conducted in a research laboratory or in a company, in France or abroad. As in the first year, seminars of speakers from both academia and industry complement the educational program.

These courses impart the fundamental knowledge in the nanotechnology field applied to physics, electronics, optics, materials science and biotechnology. Students are required to follow at least twelve core module courses during the two-year program.

Experimental Modules

Students conduct lab practicals that are integrated into the various courses, during which they familiarize themselves hands-on with all standard techniques for fabrication and characterization of nanostructures. They furthermore have the opportunity to work more independently on individual or group projects.

Ancillary Courses and Seminars

This module deals with complementary know-how, relevant both for academia and in an industrial environment. Students follow a course on intellectual-property issues. Ethical aspects and the societal impact of nanotechnology are covered in specialized seminars, which also allow for networking with national and international nanotechnology companies and research laboratories. Communication skills are likewise developed through written and oral presentations of all experimental work that is carried out during the Master program.

Internship

In the second semester, students conduct two-month internships in two of the research laboratories participating in the program. The students choose their projects and come into contact with their host laboratories earlier in the academic year already, by spending some time in these laboratories to carry out an extensive literature survey and to prepare their research projects under the guidance of their supervisors.

Master Thesis Project

The final six-month period of the program is devoted to the master project, which can be carried out either in an academic research laboratory or in an industrial environment. Students have the option to conduct their thesis project anywhere in France or abroad.

The Master's degree in Aerospace Engineering is a new graduate program of the Université de Lyon, operated by the École Centrale de Lyon. It offers a two-year program in Master 1 (M1) and Master 2 (M2). It will be set up progressively starting from September 2016, with only one M2 option "Aerospace Propulsion (PAS)" opened. Then from September 2017, a second M2 option "Dynamic and Sustainability of Composite Materials (DDC)" and the M1 common-core syllabus will be opened.

The concerned disciplinary fields are fluid mechanics and energy, solid and structural mechanics, materials, and control engineering, in relation with three renowned research laboratories of Lyon: LMFA, LTDS and Ampère.

The Master is in line with the strategic axis "Science and engineering for a sustainable society" defined by the Université de Lyon, as well as with two social challenges identified by the École Centrale de Lyon, "Aeronautics and space" and "Increasing the competitiveness of the industrial economy through innovation and entrepreneurship".

The purpose is to train future technical leaders and researchers for all aspects of the aerospace industry from major constructors like SAFRAN and Airbus, to component suppliers. A special attention is paid to make students aware of codes, languages and common practice in the industry. Furthermore, this industry is intrinsically transnational, with numerous opportunities to work abroad with connections to France or to work in France with connections to other countries. So the students are given the opportunity to develop international/intercultural skills.

It is to notice that the aerospace industry is subjected to long-term cycles. A "design" dominated stage with ambitious projects (A380, A350, A400M, EC 175, LEAP, …) is ending, while a "production" dominated stage is starting for the next decade. The problematic is thus moving from the design of large complex systems to the continuous optimisation of components, taking into account manufacturing and maintainability constraints, in particular with the increasing implementation of composite materials. The provided training is supporting such a change.

More specifically, the M2 option "Aerospace Propulsion" is focusing on the design process of an aircraft or a rocket engine, providing a practical understanding of all aspects of the industry, from design to manufacture and maintenance. Graduates should drive components redesign, for optimisation for new purposes or for adaptation to new production processes or maintenance procedures.

The MSc in Acoustics is a 4 semester program (two years) from Semester 7 (S7) to Semester 10 (S10) according to the European semestrial organisation. The first year of the Master (M1) is covered by S7 and S8, whereas the second year of the program (M2) by S9 and S10.

The first semester (S7) provides the scientific background required for this Master, including some fundamentals of Mechanics, Continuum Physics and data processing as well as an introductory course to Acoustics. The second semester (S8) is devoted to acoustics and its context with practical application in an Acoustic Laboratory. During the third semester (S9), more advanced and specialised courses in acoustics are offered in parallel to application oriented lectures. Students can chose to specialised in their field of interest. The last semester (S10) is devoted to the MSc project, which can be carried out in a research laboratory as well as in the industry.

In parallel to the scientific program, English courses and/or a French courses are also offered: the objective is to provide the language basics that are required to attend the scientific courses, read and write scientific articles or reports and work in an international research team.

Objectives
The objective of the MSc program is to provide the theoretical knowledge and the practical skills that are required to take up a variety of challenges in acoustics. In particular, a project (case study) and two internships are planned; thus the program offers room for applying theoretical concepts to practical situations.
There are 27 Credits (ECTS) for optional courses in which students may deepen their knowledge in aeroacoustics, building acoustics, vehicle acoustics, sound perception, ultrasounds, vibro-acoustics or fluid-structure interactions.

General skills developed during the MSc program are:
- scientific communication in French and/or in English, which is trained during devoted language courses, scientific courses in English and oral defences of the project and internships.
- corporate life awareness via courses and seminars about project management, research policies, intellectual property etc. as well as during the internships.

Time effort
The overall number of hours per student is 500h during the first (M1) and 240h during the second year (M2), that is, 740 hours spread over the 3 first semesters.

A master of excellence

Mamaself is a two year European Master program in Materials science, a program of excellence build in the framework of the Erasmus Mundus program. One specific aim of the Mamaself program is to teach the application of "Large scale facilities" for the characterisation and development of materials.

Modern life and globalisation imply new and additional exigencies for scientists and scientific engineers in the field of scientific and industrial competitiveness. This holds specifically for the development of new technologies and new materials which are important key-products and which contribute to the technological and scientific competitiveness of highly industrialized countries. The characterisation of these materials and also the optimising of technologies strongly demand sophisticated methods, some of them uniquely available at "Large scale facilities” using neutrons or synchrotron radiation.

The Master Mamaself’s objective is to train in a very multidisciplinary and international approach high-level students who will manage perfectly the scientific and technological aspects of the elaboration, the implementation, the control and the follow-up of materials, capable of fitting into the industrial environment as well as continuing with a PhD.

A consortium of five universities

The Mamaself Consortium includes 5 primary European Universities in the field of Materials sciences, Engineering Physics, Chemistry :

The partners have a large background in materials science and a long collaboration with Large Scale Facilities. They are located in culturally and historically rich European towns. Through full integration of teaching and research, the consortium universities have managed to bring together different specializations in a unique course programme.

Erasmus Mundus programme

The Erasmus Mundus programme is a co-operation and mobility programme in higher education. It aims to enhance quality in European higher education and to promote intercultural understanding through co-operation with third countries. 

The programme is intended to strengthen European co-operation and international links in higher education by supporting high-quality European Masters Courses, enabling students from around the world to engage in postgraduate study at European higher education institutions, as well as encouraging the outgoing mobility of European students and scholars towards third countries.

Structure of the program

The program is organized as a pedagogic continuum:

The course begins in September (semester 1) of each year, including lectures, tutorials, seminars and a work-based research project

Students can start Year 1 of their studies at any of the five partner universities. Semester 3 is offered at one the other 4 partner universities, while semester 4 can be undertaken in industry, at one of the consortium universities, at LSF or at any of the partner universities. 

In each semester, students take 30 ECTS credits.

The duration of the Mamaself Masters course is two years (120 ECTS credits). The academic program is split into two years with 60 ECTS credits for each. The language of instruction and examination is English. The student will stay one year in one institution and a second second in another institution. In respect of the Erasmus Mundus mobility rules, students must change country between Yea 1 and Year 2. It is not possible to stay the two years at the same site in Munich. It is possible to go back to one of the two first institutions for the 4th semester.

Year 1

The first year consists of lectures and practicals at one out of the five universities yielding 60 ECTS. This part of teaching will take place at one of the 5 leading European universities belonging to the consortium.

At the end of the first year, student must change country and join a second institution.

Students will receive at least 2 European Master diploma , one for each institution.

Year 2

  • Summerschool

The second academic year will start with a summer school of two weeks, where both lectures and practicals (comprehensively corresponding to 7 ECTS) will offer an excellent introduction into the use of “Large Scale Facilities”. The core of the lectures will all be given by the scientists responsible of the Master in each of the four universities (W. Paulus, P. Rabiller, W. Petry and W. Schmahl, C. Lamberti), exhibiting a huge background in this area. Each year the core lectures will be supported by specific seminars given by other university colleagues and by researchers directly coming from national or European Large Scale Facilities centers.

During these two weeks, the topic of the Master thesis will be chosen by the student out of a list of subjects proposed by the staff of the institutions.

  • Year 2

During the first semester of the second year each student has to shift to one out of the four other universities. The first semester consists in lectures and practicals (30 ects, cf programme in each university of the consortium). During the second semester of the second year the student has to undergo the Master thesis work which will also yield 30 ECTS. The thesis work will take six months and is generally in strong relation with the use of ”Large Scale Facilities” for applied or academic research problem.

The research topic can be supervised and located at large Scale Facilities, but will then be jointly supervised by an advisor of one of the consortium institutions. The research work is finalised by a written dissertation, wich must be defended in front of a comittee.

Students may undergo their master thesis at another partner institution in Japan (Kyoto University, Tokyo Institite of Technology) Switzerland (PSI / ETH Zurich) or India (IIT Madras), Univeristy Cornell (USA), University of Connecticut (USA).

The international master on “Control for Green Mechatronics” (GREEM), within the “Robotics and Control” mention of the French Ministry of Education, promotes a high-quality educational offer in the area of design and control of mechatronic systems with a particular focus on two points: their functional performances and their energetic efficiency. The consideration of the energy efficiency makes the GREEM international master very singular and very innovative and makes it answer a real actual societal matter which is the effect of technological devices to the ecology. After graduation, the students will have mastered the area of green mechatronics where they will be able to design new or re-design existing mechatronic systems, to model and simulate them, to calculate controllers for their automation and their performances improvement, and to setup networks of mechatronic systems, all together with consideration of the energy efficiency. Furthermore, international experience possibility is offered to the students: exchanges with partner universities at the international level are possible with eventual dual-degree, internships at the international level are encouraged, a great part of the courses are given in English, and French language and culture courses are given for non-francophone students.

Site of training

The site of training is Besançon, a French old city that combines old stones buildings, French culture, various activities from sports to cultural, and students life. Approximately 10% of the population are students or interns in Besançon city and in its agglomeration. The center of applied languages (CLA, http://cla.univ-fcomte.fr/) which is a part of the university (UFC/UBFC) is one of the most important center for learning languages in France and hosts approximately 4000 interns per year coming from various countries for some days or for several months. Public transportation is very practical and the old-city is doable by walks.

Entry requirements (Students profiles)

The applicant should have a level of English and a background on “control systems” following the UFC/UBFC criterias. Additionally to these, the motivations and the professional project of the applicant are also examined carefully.
