This Master's degree is designed for students who wish to practice across a broad range environmental engineering and apply new sustainable risk management strategies for complex environmental problems. Water, Waste and Environmental Engineering has been traditionally referred to as public health engineering in the United Kingdom. In this postgraduate course, the technical aspects of both natural and engineering environmental systems will be covered. There will be broad interdisciplinary subjects synthesizing knowledge from a wide spectrum of science and engineering, expanding the content of public health engineering, which in the UK has traditionally been responsible for developing the infrastructure for managing water and waste.

Students will develop engineering skills and be able to design, develop and apply concepts for water and waste as a resource based on environmental sensitivity and be competent in planning, modelling, design, construction, operations, maintenance and control of both engineered and natural water and earth resources.

Students who select this postgraduate programme will gain a skill set that will enable them to progress in the fields of:

- Environmental engineering
- Desalination and water reuse
- Water resources engineering
- Hydraulics and hydrology
- Environmental fluid hydraulics

The MSc in Water, Waste and Environmental Engineering will incorporate solid waste management, contaminated land treatment and the use of geographic information systems (GIS) with emphasis on management of the earth's resources.

The programme will explain the relationship between different earth resources including hydrosystems, both 'engineered' - hydro-power plants, water/wastewater treatment plants, sewers - and 'natural' - rivers, lakes, wetlands, irrigation districts, reservoirs etc., solid wastes, brownfield land, and geo-derived primary resources and their sustainable management.

Teaching and learning

The number of contact hours (e.g. lectures, seminars and feedback on assignments) per module/course ranges from 50-75 hours for the one year full time programme or roughly equivalent to four hours per week per module. The expected self-study time is approximately 80-90 hours per module per year (roughly equivalent to four hours per week per module).

You will be taught by academics with a range of industrial and academia experience for each module.

Assessment

Project work, assignments and laboratory exercises in addition to substantial written examination of course materials will occur in most modules. The Environmental Engineering Research Project will require submission of a substantial final report/dissertation. Assessment of this module will involve participation in a poster and seminar presentation and a final oral examination.

Professional recognition

Accreditation will be sought from the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM) and The Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) including the Institution of Civil Engineers, The Institution of Structural Engineers, the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation and Institute of Highway Engineers.

The increasing drive towards low carbon and sustainable solutions in the built environment has introduced a need for built environment professionals who can take a holistic view of the sustainability debate. This programme will combine the technical design and engineering issues associated with the delivery of sustainable built environments with an appreciation for how such approaches can be justified in a commercially focused world. The programme considers passive (building fabric) and active measures (building services and renewable energy technologies) setting out what approach may be taken when considering new build or, as is becoming increasingly important the existing building stock. Students will gain the skills needed to assess these options on a whole life basis with an appreciation for how the financial and business case can be made for such approaches. The programme is closely linked with the schools Sustainable Built Environments Research Group (SBERG) and will be informed by the cutting edge research carried out by the group considering technical, behavioural and social issues associated with the delivery of sustainable built environments. The University of Greenwich is a Passive House Examination Centre and students can gain extra certification as a Passive House Designer/Consultant by taking the programme.

The university has invested £76 million in a new building to house the campus library, TV studios and academic facilities for disciplines including architecture, design and construction. Stockwell Street, where the programme will be delivered, is a short walk from the university's buildings on the Old Royal College site.

The aims of the programme are:

- To develop skills and understanding around the principles of sustainable building with a view to delivering healthy, comfortable, efficient and environmentally friendly buildings

- To consider how the above issues can be applied when working with existing buildings

- To take the technical knowledge gained and working within a commercial world to produce convincing and robust business cases for implementing sustainable solutions.

Built Environment

We need tools to help us create a built environment that is responsive rather than obstructive to its users and to the world around it. At Greenwich we encourage both students and staff to embrace the interconnectedness of design, construction and building management, of landscape architecture and graphic design, and to constantly look at new ways of exploring these areas.

All architecture programmes focus on the urgent necessity to change our living habits in order to design and build a sustainable urban environment.

The construction management programmes are designed to provide students with a high level of understanding of the design, function, construction and statutory requirements for buildings of all classes, and to prepare them for more advanced employment within the construction industry.

Career options

The oil and gas industries provide a wide range of career opportunities across the globe. Some are offshore, working directly out on the rigs drilling for oil and gas and on fixed installation oil and gas production platforms as part of the extraction process. Other roles are in commercial activities working onshore, such as in buying and selling oil and gas or as part of the legal teams setting up contracts.

This programme provides you with an insight into measures that are required to provide a supply of safe and wholesome food to consumers globally. A wide spectrum of food safety and quality management issues are addressed following the farm to fork approach.

Increasing globalization of the food chain has resulted in many disputes about the safety and quality of food products. You will learn about the elements that make up an effective national food control system based on risk anlysis and acquire an understanding of the interactions between control systems and trade.

You will acquire a knowledge of the design and management of safety and quality management systems based upon risk analysis, e.g. Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP), ISO 9001:2008 and private standards, all designed to meet the requirements of national and international legislation. Students sit the Royal Society for Public Health Level 3 Award in HACCP for Food Manufacturing and are also given membership of the Institute of Food Science and Technology.

Individual courses are offered on a stand-alone basis. These are attended by professionals working in the food industry. Lectures are also delivered by experts currently working in the food sector. This gives our postgraduate students the opportunity to interact with and learn directly from a range of practitioners.

Students have the opportunity to apply for short placements in the food sector, which provides them with the all important experience that they can demonstrate when applying for jobs.

The aims of the programme are:

To prepare you for careers in the national and international food chain, e.g. food businesses, consultancy, research and development
To equip you with the knowledge and skills that will enhance your employability
To enrich your understanding of the dynamics of food safety and quality management systems and the context under which they operate at national and international levels.
