This is a 12 month intensive programme to convert you to be able to practice in Real Estate management. Any degree discipline will be considered. The programme has been running for over 20 years at Aberdeen and it is a programme for which Aberdeen is highly regarded internationally. You are taught from our strengths which lie in property valuation, investment, economics and finance.

You learn a considerable amount about real estate management including legal considerations, economics, investment and development, and analysis. This programme is ideal for students from the UK however we also provide an international pathway programme for international students and those wishing to pursue global interests. You are taught by the Global Real Estate Group at Aberdeen. Careers can be wide and varied including surveying, investment and property valuation, planning development and property management and others. Many of our graduates work in the city in London and other UK cities in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Manchester and so on. Many work with local practices in the UK.

We support you further with talks from industry professionals to find out what it is like to practice in real estate and answer your questions. We go to 'site visits' and we give you project work from industry to help you get real skills and application at the start. If you want to enjoy a career within international relations you may be looking at positions within policy making within government and the civil service within foreign affairs. You can also go into the defence area, development and human rights. A lot of graduates choose to go into advocacy, research and project management from this degree working for NGOs. If you are interested in how countries manage risk associated with conflict in society, peace-building, defence and policies, business and organisational risk in different countries and the current and future challenges to stability within different countries and regions of the world and your special interest is energy you will be interested in this programme which is dedicated to combining the two areas.  Aberdeen is well known as an energy centre globally and it provides more FTSE 100 companies than many cities due to its connections with the energy industry. Many companies have located their headquarters in Aberdeen and other energy centres include Houston, Texas, plus newer global centres situated around new forms of extraction and nearby centres of population. Managing existing industry and new infrastructure can be very challenging in many respects.  Areas for mineral extraction can be isolated and remote or within areas of the world which are also in conflict. If you are interested in the way our world has been shaped by security issues, conflict, defence policies and how business and other organisations deal with risks in different areas of the world you will be interested in Strategic Studies. Much is discussed about our world and the challenges we face in terms of conflict but where does this conflict come from? How do different countries look at their security issues and what changes their perception of risk? You study historical issues which have lead to conflict in the world and where this conflict comes from. You look at international organisations and their contribution to global order and you look at domestic policies, ideology, historical influences which continue to play out and cultural ideological factors.

You scrutinise real world conflicts and the application of power and force, learning about global security and development. You study global defence policies, domestic and cultural factors involved in strategy.  The programme attracts a number of international students due to its international focus and graduates go on to wide ranging careers with a focus on strategic studies such as public sector, government organisations, non government organisations, charities, private business, journalism and policy work.

If you are interested in the social challenges of our times particularly with regard to security within different countries and regions of the world this programme offers you a combination of expertise to understand the challenges of maintaining business and development within different industries and regions. This is within the context of being presented the wider issues of security and violence which impact every day operations within business and politics. 

You combine Strategic Studies with International Law which then combines your knowledge of security and conflict around the world with an appreciation and understanding the various laws that exist to protect and allow business and country regulations to continue within this environment. International Law looks at trade law such as customs, treaties and in this context helps you build a knowledge of how these are managed in times of crisis. You can also consider bringing in Humanitarian Law and Human Rights Law depending upon where you see your degree going in terms of career interests. What this combined degree does offer you is a very strong set of analytical skills, a great level of knowledge about historical events to give you scenarios about how specific issues have been managed and may be likely to be managed within countries and regions of the world.

The programme allows you to study force and power interface with the added dimension of international law and impacts on prevention, control and conduct of state and non state coercion in conflicts. Your knowledge can be applied directly within a range of organisations and businesses. You could work in government departments in an advisory role, foreign affairs, security areas and in policy.  You could also work in commercial risk assessments for private multinational companies, specific industries and the armed forces.

If you want to enjoy a career within international relations you may be looking at positions within policy making within government and the civil service within foreign affairs. You can also go into the defence area, development and human rights. A lot of graduates choose to go into advocacy, research and project management from this degree working for NGOs. Some others follow careers in regional and global institutions such as the EU or UN and others go into the armed forces or international media working as journalists and reporters. Other careers our graduates have followed have been in international risk management and international corporations in trade and finance.
