The international community and the EU in particular, have been calling for improvement in the process of delivering aid aiming at enhancing the ability of aid organisations to react efficiently and effectively to the increased occurrence of disasters. The significance of disasters is increasing due to variables such as population growth, climate change, urbanisation and global connectivity. The impact of natural disasters such as the Tsunami on the Far East and Hurricane Katrina on New Orleans is still being felt in those regions. Human initiated disasters such as the Twin Towers collapse and the Madrid and London bombings have had an enormous impact on security systems and world travel. Biologically based disasters such as SARS and bird flu similarly have had worldwide impact.

The MSc in Humanitarian Logistics and Emergency Management is a unique programme and is the first in the world to combine the academic disciplines of humanitarian logistics and emergency management. The programme builds on the established strengths and reputation of Ireland and in particular Irish Aid, in delivering humanitarian assistance to those in need.

The organizations providing the first phase of disaster response need the capacity and capabilities to deliver goods and services quickly to those impacted by an event. This is often under difficult circumstances in foreign locations and across cultures. The organisations involved in delivering the aid also need to be responsive in order to quickly provide resources required for the basic necessities of survival in the critical period immediately after an event in order to reduce further loss of life. This programme is a multi-disciplinary programme that provides high quality academic education and professional competencies for personnel working in or intending to work in the area of humanitarian relief to deal with the matters outlined. The programme will provide humanitarian professionals with the competences to work effectively and efficiently in challenging environments.

The programme aims to contribute to the development needs of future managers and employees in public, private sector organizations and nongovernmental organisations. Providing graduates with disciplinary expertise with an additional set of management and business tools will significantly enhance their employment potential.

The programme is designed to meet the requirements of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (Irish Aid) and the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government for practitioners in the management of humanitarian disasters and major emergencies. It is aimed at practitioners in public, private and voluntary sectors who are engaged in Humanitarian Logistics & Emergency Management. •Very stimulating class. The material was available prior to the class which allowed us to digest it as a group and understand the main points of the lecture.

•Reviewing the current situation in the Philippines and comparing this with the crisis in Syria was excellent. The comparison of two level 3 emergencies, how they developed over different time scales with total different responses to each crisis reinforced earlier presentations on the pace at which natural disasters happen in comparison to civil or manmade disasters.

•I would like to express how much I have really enjoyed this programme. The programme has shown me that education at this level does not have to be boring and all theory but can be challenging, interactive and entertaining.

•The lectures are interesting because we are encouraged to engage in discussion on the topics being covered. I think the slides are very well presented and easy to understand and there’s a good balance between media content and discussion. Reading content in relation to lecture is posted on Moodle in advance and this gives me every opportunity to prepare for lecture.

•Completing the UN service mindset training for logisticians and receiving the certificates for same as part of the programme is an excellent initiative.

Students wishing to pursue a career in applied behaviour analysis (ABA) can complete a two-year MSc. degree with course sequence approval by the Behaviour Analyst Certification Board (BACB). Graduates are thus eligible to sit the examination for the internationally recognised qualification of Board Certified Behaviour Analyst at senior level (BCBA). Additional requirements to qualify are (i), coursework experience (voluntary or paid employment in an appropriate placement setting), and (ii) applied supervision by a qualified BCBA. The latter will be sourced independently by the student. Students entering the Structured Postgraduate Programme in Biology will be under the supervision of an experienced researcher. All academic staff members in the Biology Department are experienced and active researchers and can supervise research students. In most but not all instances, your stipend, university fees, consumable, equipment and travel costs will be paid from a research grant from a national or international grant agency or charity. Your supervisor usually competitively obtains this grant, but students can also obtain their own scholarships.

Upon entering the programme each student will be assigned two additional mentors, an Advisor and an Assessor. The Advisor provides additional mentorship for the student throughout the programme and is someone the student can discuss issues with in addition to their supervisor. The Assessor is a member of staff who will provide an annual constructive critique of the students work programme and will aid, together with the Advisor, in outlining possible future research plans.
In addition to the research project, training is provided through compulsory attendance of a variety of generic and transferable skills as well as subject specific modules. For example, the established Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning will provide research students with experience in practical class demonstrating and teaching and learning methodologies. Training in subject specific skills is provided through modules offered either through the Biology Department or as part of the Dublin Region Higher Education Alliance (DRHEA). Advanced modules in many life science topics are already established within the Biomedical Sciences and Chemistry strands of the DRHEA provides a variety of to students on the programme. Finally, research students will be encouraged to attend at least one international conference during their programme, at which they will be expected to present an oral or poster presentation.

Maynooth University (MU) in Ireland; the University of St. Andrews (UStA) in Scotland; and Université de Lorraine (UL) in France are offering a two-year Master Programme in Dependable Software Systems (DESEM).

Our objective is to provide students with the knowledge, skill and in-depth technical understanding of the key concepts required to design and build dependable software systems. This will be achieved by bringing together the theory and practice of software development and, in particular, through the transfer of knowledge from the classroom via research driven and commercially relevant projects.

The double-degree will be achieved over two years, through the allocation of 120 ECTS. Students will study in two of the three partner universities, achieving a diploma supplement from each university in which they accomplish 60 ECTS.

Courses are taught in English and are structured according to the ECTS. Students will be integrated into the culture of the country where they study through language and cultural courses provided by the Universities which they attend.

This structured research programme in Geocomputation aims to:
• Build capacity for independent research.
• Enhance advanced specialist knowledge in Geocomputation alongside transferable and generic skills.
• Enable students to disseminate their research.

In addition to the modules associated with this particular course, this structured programme offers postgraduate researchers the opportunity to select from modules taught on the MSc in Geocomputation and professional skills training modules offered by different faculties or modules offered by other Departments which are of particular interest, for example research commercialisation.

Students must take a minimum of 10 credits in taught modules (at least 5 in generic/transferable modules and at least 5 in subject specific/advanced specialist modules) from the Structured PhD programme.


There is an international shortage of highly skilled researchers able to handle large and complex datasets. Thus far our graduates have continued with research in academic environments but there are opportunities in public and private sector research and development, with environmental concerns and policy organisations: much depends on the substantive area of the thesis topic. This might focus on the innovative collection and processing of new datasets, on visualising complex datasets in multiple dimensions, on machine learning or on algorithms for the spatial analysis of data in a particular application area, for example health and retailing.

Overview

Given the wider development of Citizen GIS and an increased public awareness and knowledge of the power and value of spatial data, vastly increased amounts of such data from different sources are now available to researchers. However, in order to turn these data into useful information, they must be efficiently managed, processed and analysed before being displayed in a comprehensible format. Geographical Information Systems and the associated field of Remote Sensing greatly aid us in such tasks. The course is equally split between both parts - GIS and Remote Sensing - with four core module introducing the theory and practice of both subject at an introductory and advanced level. Geographical Information Systems or GIS as they are better known, are widely used in a wide variety of subject fields across the physical and social sciences and even in the humanities, with applicability in everything from archaeology and astronomy to geomorphology and globalisation to soil science and social planning. Remote Sensing – the analysis and interpretation of aerial and satellite imagery – has transformed the manner in which we view the Earth. The synoptic view of the Earth that it has given us has greatly improved our understanding of atmospheric and oceanic processes, sustained environmental management and the interaction of humans with the natural world. It is now a standard research tool in many fields such as geology, geography, pollution control, agriculture and climatology. Additional optional modules in Programming, Spatial Databases and Remote Sensing of the Subsurface are also available to students who want to develop the technical side more fully, though the course has a strong applied flavour throughout. In addition, all students complete a work placement in the Summer months which allows them to gain valuable practical experience to test and develop the skills learnt across the course.

Aims of the Course:
- To provide highly qualified, motivated graduates who have been trained in Geographical Information Systems, Remote Sensing and Digital Image Processing and who can apply the information technology skills they obtain.

- To produce marketable graduates who will make significant contributions to GIS and RS application areas including; industry, government, academia, the community and voluntary sector and other public and private bodies.

- To provide an understanding of Geographical Information Systems and Remote Sensing, the technology involved and its applications for specific investigations.

Course Structure

The course consists of 6 modules, 5 of which are compulsory. Two of these cover the theoretical concepts underpinning GIS and Remote Sensing. Course Structure
