The Master of Contemporary Art (MCA) is a dynamic program that supports the development of a career in contemporary art practice. Read more
The Master of Contemporary Art (MCA) is a dynamic program that supports the development of a career in contemporary art practice. The MCA is specifically designed to offer students with training in the visual arts, and students wishing to re-enter the field, with a valuable platform for up-skilling. The MCA also provides an important pathway to research degrees (including MFA) by offering specialised research training electives. MCA students propose and develop a self-initiated visual arts project. Seminars in art practice concentrate on the practical, theoretical and material context of contemporary art and the relationship with students' individual studio practice. History and theory seminars provide a forum for discussion on key theorists and philosophers appropriate to contemporary art, and may also include gallery visits and guest lectures. Students can tailor the degree to their preferred pathway, be it research or professional. Those who wish to undertake a more professional pathway can complete a placement that interfaces directly with the creative industries. Students are examined on their studio project at the completion of their study. The degree is self-directed, flexible, and cross-disciplinary, and has a strong record of providing students with professional opportunities.

The Master of Moving Image (MMI) offers students hands-on education in contemporary moving image production by teaching them how to develop a film project from concept to screen. Read more
The Master of Moving Image (MMI) offers students hands-on education in contemporary moving image production by teaching them how to develop a film project from concept to screen. Foregrounding experimentation and innovation, the MMI brings together traditional aspects of film production with new directions in the cinematic arts, incorporating new technologies in interactivity, three-dimensional imaging and virtual delivery. Film projects are conceived, developed and produced through learning industry standard protocols and techniques in pre-production, production and post-production. These include story and script development, production management, art direction, cinematography, directing techniques, and the use of new platforms for film output including interactive apps for hand-held devices. Students are also introduced to the history and theory of film and new media, and can choose from a range of electives from across the university including animation, screenwriting, sound design, digital effects, and rich internet applications.

Students produce a major film project in any genre or style. Students have options to specialise their degree pathway through industry placement, as well as through preparation for further study and higher degrees of research. The degree is ideal for professionals looking for a career in the film and digital media sector, and for anyone wishing to engage with contemporary filmmaking and interactive media.

The Master of Music Studies (Composition) is a three-semester coursework degree that focusses on the acquisition of high-level composition technique. Read more
The Master of Music Studies (Composition) is a three-semester coursework degree that focusses on the acquisition of high-level composition technique. It provides the opportunity for those interested in composition, or with a background in composition, to develop their compositional style, technique and ideas within a rigorous musical environment.

The Master of Music Studies degree is based entirely upon coursework components that enable you to gain practical skills in composition. You have weekly composition lessons with a tutor and will take part in a specific composition class geared towards this degree. Composition skills you will acquire in this degree include the areas of compositional style, instrumentation, technology, performance genres and technique.

The Master of Music Studies also provides for the acquisition of skills useful to life as a professional composer, such as conducting, sound recording, research skills and concert curation. You will work on a weekly basis with student performers in the first two semesters, allowing you to try out new ideas and hear them immediately translated into sound.

There are no genre restrictions or guidelines as to music that students may create in this degree: this is negotiated between each student and their tutor. High-level notation and music theory skills are strongly recommended.

In contrast to the Master of Music (Composition) degree, composers in the Master of Music Studies degree are not required to write a thesis or dissertation. The Master of Music Studies (Composition) degree contains a greater degree of practical coursework components specifically relating to composition.
