You will be introduced to sophisticated techniques at the forefront of mathematics and computer science. Based on the Schools’ complementary research strengths the programme follows two main strands:

Algorithms & Complexity Theory
This concerns the efficiency of algorithms for solving computational problems, and identifies hierarchies of computational difficulty.

This subject has applications in many areas, such as distributed computing, algorithmic tools to manage transport infrastructure, health informatics, artificial intelligence, and computational biology.

Numerical Methods & Parallel Computing
Many problems, in maths, physics, astrophysics and biology cannot be solved using analytical techniques and require the application of numerical algorithms for progress. The development and optimisation of these algorithms coupled to the recent increase in computing power via the availability of massively parallel machines has led to great advances in many fields of computational mathematics. This subject has many applications, such as combustion, lubrication, atmospheric dispersion, river and harbour flows, and many more.

This MSc will provide you with technical and transferable skills that are valued by industry.

You will gain key algorithmic tools to work across many industries including transport infrastructure, health informatics, computational biology, artificial intelligence, companies developing the internet e.g. search engines.

You could also progress onto a career in computing or finance where mathematics is valued.

The emerging era of ‘big data’ brought about by the digital technology revolution shows no signs of abating. In this era, demand for data scientists will continue to grow, with a report from e-skills UK predicting the generation of approximately 28,000 data science jobs opportunities each year by 2017.

There are a broad range of job opportunities which require data science skills, including Business Analyst, Business Intelligence Analyst, Data Scientist, Data Engineer, Data Manager, Data Analyst, Data Architect and Data Modelling and Data Mining Engineer.

The course

This Data Science and Analytics MSc is a highly flexible course, with a wide range of option modules taught by research-active academics. The course combines expertise from our School of Mathematics, School of Computing, School of Business, School of Geography, and the Yorkshire Centre for Health Informatics. This collaboration allows you to benefit from a range of data science perspectives and applications, supporting you to tailor your learning to your career ambitions.

This programme focuses on scientific, technical and computational aspects of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and Geographical Information Science (GIScience), with particular reference to the socioeconomic and environmental sciences. It provides highly qualified and motivated students sought by employers in the sector.

Core modules introduce GIS, a rapidly evolving area in business, health and planning settings, as well as in environmental applications. You will be introduced to GIS packages and database systems, useful for those wanting to undertake social and environmental science research and those wanting to understand the application of geotechnology as practitioners. You’ll study theories and concepts underpinning GIS and explore topics including spatial data models, data capture, spatial analysis and statistical and mathematical modelling. Optional modules allow you to focus on quantitative human geography, environmental applications and programming GIS.

This programme is available part time, allowing you to combine study with other commitments. You can work to fund your studies, or gain a new qualification without giving up an existing job.
