Software engineers are in high demand, and Bristol is home to many high-tech companies seeking suitable graduates. The MSc Software Engineering gives you the latest knowledge and skills and guides you in applying them to develop different kinds of large, complex software systems. The faculty's Software Engineering Research Group (SERG) reviews the course each year to ensure it provides what students and employees need. Students can link to SERG research and development activities and attend monthly research seminars from senior academics and key industrial professionals.

UWE Bristol's links with industrial partners encourage research and studies, and support the next step into PhD studies and further research. You will be taught by academics and professionals at the cutting edge of research and in collaboration with key partners such as Airbus, P3 Germany, SogeClair France, have the chance to develop advanced knowledge in the engineering of complex software systems, 'systems of systems' and critical aspects of the software development process. The course develops your knowledge and understanding of fundamental and advanced concepts of software engineering, using state-of-the-art techniques and research findings.

Course detail

You'll learn the ethical issues involved in the engineering of software systems and undertake in-depth research in particular areas of software engineering. You'll also acquire the technical skills necessary for requirements engineering, architectural modelling of enterprise systems, implementation, configuration management, quality management, and effective project management applied in a group-based context.

You'll take a reflective and critical approach to your work and develop key transferable skills, such as critical thinking, problem management and research skills and methods underpinned by key emerging topics in software engineering and the MSc dissertation by research and development.

Most taught modules have written coursework and exam components. Coursework includes, but is not limited to, critical problem-solving components, advanced programming tasks, critical essays in relation to particular software engineering aspects, and group projects.

Careers / Further study

Graduates have a range of options for starting their software engineering careers, or for further advanced programmes of study. Possible industrial careers include senior roles as software engineers, requirements engineers, enterprise and software architects, configuration and quality managers, and software project managers.

This course paves the way for PhD research studies in software engineering at UWE Bristol, or elsewhere. If you take the PhD route at UWE Bristol, you will have opportunities to work with senior SERG researchers and use some of your MSc Software Engineering modules for some of the 60-credit requirements for the PhD degree.

The MSc Information Technology prepares you for the intellectual, analytical and practical challenges of a career in IT. You will develop the knowledge and skills necessary to collate information, define, design and build or select the most appropriate IT solutions and develop a deeper understanding of how those solutions apply to professional contexts.

You can study part-time whilst in full-time employment, as there are few pre-requisites for most modules.

Key benefits

The British Computer Society's Professional Graduate Diploma (PGD) is accepted as an appropriate entry qualification for this course. The PGD is also accepted as advanced standing to IT-related undergraduate degrees at UWE Bristol.

Course detail

Upon graduation, you will be able to critically evaluate developments and new applications of information and communication technology systems, and relate them to the roles and uses of IT in different business settings. You will also have an enhanced understanding of system problems and how to choose the right methods and approaches to develop systems. From engaging in primary research for the dissertation and studying relevant literature, you will learn to recognise what constitutes suitable research questions or hypotheses and the appropriate perspectives for analysis.

Structure

The full Masters course is made up of 180 credits divided into three 60 credit stages: Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma and Masters. You will work incrementally through the three stages and need to pass all modules at each stage to be able to progress onto the next.

The MSc route is structured so that three quarters of the taught course comprises core modules, while you choose the rest to fit your personal and professional aspirations and career goals. In the first term, there are four core modules, followed by one core module and two optional ones in the second term.

Course detail

As well as giving equal weight to both the research component and the games development component, the course aims to establish an essential bridge between ground-breaking academic research and the entertainment software industry itself, often overlooked or misunderstood by both.

Modules

• Commercial Games Studio - In this module you will focus on the development of commercial entertainment software products in a real-world industry setting. It will involve working on commercial projects slated for release or stakeholder handover.

• Games Research and Development - Immerse yourself in this rapidly moving stream of innovation, and learn how to deploy new technologies across a range of contexts and emerging application areas. This module forms the basis of a portfolio providing an entry point to research and development within the Games industry and also to academic research and real-world application.

Format

The two taught modules will use collaborative game development techniques to help you develop both individual technical skills and advanced team working skills.

Staff will be embedded in the activities, leading teams and individuals under industry conditions.

You will use reflective video logs and streaming as effective industry and academic resources. Game jam learning will be used for producing prototypes, strengthening group dynamics and fostering continuing professional development and communities of practice.

Assessment

We will use a variety of assessment tools appropriate to the modules.

For Advanced Games Development, you will submit a portfolio with group and individual vivas.

For the Research and Development for Games module, assessment will be through video development logs, prototypes and a technology research portfolio of academic standard research papers.

Careers / Further study

As well as post-doctoral study and employment in PlayWest itself, the course prepares students for a diverse range of roles within games development (indie and AAA provision), visualisation, virtual and augmented reality, software provision, visual effects, and mobile and app development.

From day one, we encourage you to develop an online portfolio and apply your skills in industry. To support this, we run an online forum and jobs board with details of internships, summer placements and other opportunities with our established industry partners, including Disney Digital Division, LYFT, IBM, E3. CX Partners and Gravity Well.

As a result, many students do commercial work alongside their studies. These range from developing smartphone apps, recording, game and website development and social media. Those wishing to boost their skills can also take advantage of internships and collaborative projects.

You also have the option to gain experience in the international field with one of our partner institutions overseas. We have in-principle agreements set up for placements or exchanges with The Studio for Electro Instrumental Music (STEIM) in Amsterdam, Netherlands; The Experience Design School at Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen, Germany; IT University in Copenhagen, Denmark; and the Hong Kong Design Institute in China. These will last from two to six weeks.

Assessment

We use a range of assessment tools throughout the course, such as coursework, portfolio presentations, academic written submissions, poster presentations and exams for individual modules. You will also complete a dissertation based on the final collaborative project.
