The MSc International Applied Communication programme allows students to develop skills and knowledge in advanced applied communication at a global level.

This is an innovative personal, professional and academic development programme and has been designed to cater for the growing demand for independent thinking communication managers who can assist organisations in responding to a fast changing, international environment. It will prepare students for a career in international organisations including the UN, NGOs (such as the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent), the Foreign Office and British Council as well as in public relations consultancies and in-house communication departments. It will also prepare students to pursue an academic career and continue their study at PhD level.

Students will be offered a balanced postgraduate education, developing advanced theoretical knowledge, practical insights and professional skills. The course is a comprehensive educational programme which includes two semesters of highly specialised and thorough theoretical modules, followed by a dissertation period. It aims to expand your theoretical understanding of applied communication practice in a global context through its dynamic structure, aims and objectives.

The studies will focus on various areas of applied communication including public relations, media communication, digital communication, public affairs, lobbying, public issues management, fundraising, sponsorship, communication management, communication theory, and research in an international context.

Besides taught modules, an annual Brussels seminar and team-building activities are integrated in the course. During the Brussels seminar, students visit European instructions (including the European Parliament and the European Commission) and attend lectures and workshops with senior public affairs and public relations practitioners working in Brussels. The students also attend team-building weekend at UCLan Tyn D’wr campus in Wales to advance their personal and professional development, improve group work and enhance employability.

Optional visits to industry and European public relations conferences, guest lectures and employability events are offered to explore current issues in public relations and communication management theory and practice.

The MSc is taught by an international research-active team of experts, who have a wide range of industry experience and links. You will have plenty of opportunities to interact with fellow participants, academics and practitioners at UCLan as well as at international seminars and conferences.

Whilst each module has its own particular flavour and approach, all modules within the programme operate within a number of general principles. Namely, each will use an approach designed to support and sustain the acquisition, analysis and consideration of Marketing Management concepts and theories through lectures and seminars; the application of such concepts and theories to personal and organisational settings through case studies and projects; the analysis of live issues and problems using up-to-date materials from the media and research studies, and finally, to learn from the experiences of the students on the Programme itself, who will undoubtedly come from a wide range of countries and cultures.

During all semesters, you will also work closely with various staff members to plan and undertake your MSc Dissertation. Probably the major achievement for all Master’s degree graduates, it represents a unique opportunity to study a subject or issue related to marketing management in great depth, and one that is really relevant and of interest to you and hopefully your future career.
