Programme overview

Our MSc Business Analytics programme is a one year, full-time programme consisting of 6 core modules, and 2 elective modules from a choice of 7 elective modules.

The core modules are conducted via lectures, tutorials, and computer laboratory sessions. Students undertake the dissertation project in Business Analytics in collaboration with one of our international industrial partners.

Graduates of the programme will have gained the necessary skills and knowledge in a range of fields, including business operation, database, statistics, informatics, data analytics, machine learning and big data technologies in real-world business contexts.

Applicants for this programme are required to have at least a second class honours in the first division or international equivalent in any discipline, including business and management, and at least 10 credits equivalent value with significant mathematical/statistical content (However, this course is not suitable for students who have previously studied a significant amount of business analytics).

Teaching and Learning

Our learning environment is highly interactive and innovative with student-centred learning activities.

Other than examinations, our students will be assessed via essays writing, practical exercises, group and individual projects, and oral presentations.

The dissertation focuses on developing students’ skills in applying analytic techniques, communicating and solving the data analytics problem.

About the course

The course is designed for students who wish to develop an understanding and working knowledge of the principles and applications of a variety of surveying devices and techniques.

Versions of this course have been running at The University of Nottingham in the UK for almost 20 years. This course runs entirely at The University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC), providing students with the ability to appreciate and apply state-of-the-art engineering surveying techniques within a practical context. It includes the principles underpinning surveying, such as reference systems and geodesy, as well as the techniques and equipment used in engineering surveying, photogrammetry and satellite positioning systems such as GPS. UNNC is located in an excellent GNSS coverage area, from which both BeidouI+II/Compass and QZSS satellites can be observed.

In addition to the formal part of the course, we run practical classes that allow students to see and learn how to use and operate a very wide variety of state-of-the-art surveying equipment and software, including laser scanners, servo driven total stations, RTK and Network RTK GPS, digital and analogue photogrammetry, LiDAR, SAR and InSAR.

Students studying this course will be develop the ability to:

  • apply their skills directly within the surveying industry
  • react quickly to new technologies and innovations
  • communicate ideas effectively in written reports, verbally and through making presentations to groups
  • exercise original thought, as well as gain interpersonal, communication and professional skills 
  • plan and undertake an individual project

The course is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and the Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors (ICES).

Course structure and content

The course consists of 120 credits of taught modules along with a 60 credit major individual research-based project undertaken over the summer term. It is also available as a postgraduate diploma which covers the same taught modules, but does not include the research project. Please be aware modules are subject to change.

It will normally take the form of scientific investigation whether it involves experimentation or an extensive review of work already completed by others. One credit represents 10 hours of student work, meaning that a 15 credit module represents 150 hours of study including formal teaching, independent study, revision, and preparation for assessments. This degree requires the successful completion of 180 credits; 90 of which consist of taught modules, 30 for an Entrepreneurship project and 60 credits for the Entrepreneurship Business Plan or Dissertation project.

BIM is a growing technology used in the building industry worldwide. It uses digital techniques to create and use intelligent 3D models to communicate building project decisions. GIS is a technical system to implement the collection, storage, management, calculation, analysis, display and description of geospatial information data. The results help to understand what is happening in a geographical space which can increase efficiency in building planning and design. The current ‘lack of BIM innovation’ and ‘lack of BIM talent’ could delay the progress of Chinese “smart” cities, which aim to reduce resource consumption and cost and use digital technologies to benefit their citizens.

This programme will be run entirely at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) with internship opportunities in leading BIM companies in China. It is a collaboration between Department of Architecture and Built Environment and Civil Engineering. In particular, research and teaching support will be provided by two leading research laboratories including Geospatial BIM lab and Digital City Infrastructure and technology Innovation Laboratory (D-CiTi Lab). These laboratories are working closely with leading AEC consultants (Arup, WSP BP), international professional institutions (RICS, ICES, CIBSE) and leading BIM software vendors (Autodesk, Bentley, Leica, Tekla, Trimble).

Students are able to learn how to use and operate a very wide variety of state-of-the-art software, as well as surveying equipment including servo driven total stations, laser scanners, GNSS, digital and analogue photogrammetry. With extensive project and consultancy experience on the Geospatial Engineering, BIM in the AEC sector in the UK and China, the team is planning to promote the Smart City with multi-dimension BIM applications across China.

The MSc Management programme is intended to enable students:

  • To provide a structured programme that allows students to focus upon advanced developments in Management.

Programme outline

The MSc International Management programme is a full-time degree studied over a period of calendar year commencing late September and a part-time degree can be studied over a period of between 2 and 4 years. In each case participants take taught modules and prepare a dissertation. Students without the relevant English proficiency are required to do a Summer pre-sessional programme before gaining entry onto the postgraduate programme.

Classes are in the form of either two or three hour teaching/learning sessions. These included some small group teaching.

The structure of the MSc International Management programme is modular, with individual modules each having weighting of 15 credits. One credit represents 10 hours of student work. This, means that a 15 credit module represents 150 hours of study including formal teaching, independent study, revision, and the preparation of assessments. The MSc International Management degree requires the successful completion of 180 credits, 120 of which are taught modules, and 60 a Management dissertation. 

All students undertake core and elective modules relating to a wide range of management disciplines. Elective modules offer a choice of electives that allow the student to focus upon advanced management most closely associated with his/her career aspirations.

Civil engineering encompasses all of the key elements of engineering design of the built environment. As such this programme provides you with broad, advance-level training in the application of the civil engineering principles of structural, environmental and geotechnical engineering, fluid mechanics and advanced materials. With the strong global investment in construction and infrastructure driven by increasing urbanisation, civil engineering is a key field of growth. Civil engineering as a discipline is taking into account current trends such as CO2 reduction, the utilisation of new materials and the application of modern computer modelling and simulation-based techniques. Designs and design methods have become more efficient and more sustainable and civil engineers have been driving these innovations.
