​Course Content​​

The programme will emphasise the development of analytical and critical skills and on problem identification and analysis within a Biomedical Sciences context. You will be taught by a team of experienced academics, researchers and professionally qualified staff. A number of the teaching team are also HCPC registered Biomedical Scientists.

Please note there is no guarantee that all modules will be offered every year. Provision is subject to student numbers and viability. An additional three modules are required for the research dissertation.

If you are admitted to the Master's scheme but subsequently are unable or not permitted to progress, you may, depending upon the number of credits attained at the time of exit, qualify for one of the following awards:
- Postgraduate Certificate (PgC): No fewer than 60 credits
- Postgraduate Diploma (PgD): No fewer than 120 credits
- Master of Science (MSc): No fewer than 180 credits

Candidature for the MSc is five years for part-time students i.e. the course must be completed and dissertation submitted within five years of registering.

Learning & Teaching​

​A variety of teaching strategies are employed to reflect the following:
- the requirements of the particular topic
- the existence of background experience within the group
- the level and type of study required at level 7

Lectures are the most prevalent teaching method for the introduction to module material, where the major function is to provide a basic framework, to generate interest in the subject concerned and to explain complex points. Lectures are complemented by tutorial sessions designed to encourage a more detailed examination of issues. Students are issued, in their module handbook, with a programme schedule of topics to be covered in lectures and supporting tutorials for all subjects, along with lists of references to guide their supplementary reading. The VLE will also host supporting materials.

Tutorials and related small group work is an important part of teaching and learning. It encourages the depth of discussion and application appropriate to higher degree work. The major aim is to develop skills related to thinking, discussion and presentation of information. It helps to develop analytical and critical appraisal skills.

Practical Work/Demonstration sessions in certain modules, such as Analytical and Diagnostic Techniques, Molecular Biology and the Dissertation, complement and extend the theoretical aspects of study and help to develop the students' skills of investigation, analysis, critical evaluation and reflection.

Case Studies are used throughout the programme as a means of encouraging students to apply their theoretical knowledge of biomedical science to real patients and thus take a holistic view of diagnostic medicine. Real cases are used and students are encouraged to integrate knowledge from a number of modules and to reflect on the possible outcomes
In addition to the contact hours per modules (approx. 40 hours per 20 credit module) the student will be expected to undertake a certain number of student led hours (approx. 160 per 20 credit module) to achieve an overall 200 hours of student effort per 20 credit module.

- Academic Support
Students are supported at each stage of learning and assessment. The Programme Director is responsible for overall academic management of the programme and support for the student. Module Leaders are responsible for academic guidance and support for each module offered and for academic feedback on student progress. The Project Manager is responsible for all the process regarding the project work and the dissertation. Personal tutorials will be arranged with your Personal tutor throughout the programme, and if you are experiencing any difficulties with your study for example problems with coursework or preparation for examinations, then there will always be a member of staff - the Programme Director, Module Leader or personal tutor available to assist you.

Assessment

It is recognised that assessment is a necessary part of an evaluation of a student's suitability for an award and involves testing and developing the higher-level cognitive skills of analysis, synthesis and evaluation. For this reason, assessment is designed to measure the extent to which the student is able to satisfy the intended learning outcome of each module. The learning outcomes are assessed within the modules through a variety of methods including:
- unseen examinations
- essays
- practical based laboratory exercises
- laboratory reports
- case studies
- poster presentation
- case study presentation
- abstract writing and journal article reviews

Time limited examinations are seen as an end of module check on student academic attainment in certain modules where a detailed understanding of contemporary scientific thinking, often research lead, is deemed to be an essential currency.

In addition, assignments are used either in addition to or as an alternative to written examinations in certain modules where they best reflect breadth of understanding.

The assessment schedule for the taught modules will be supplied by the programme director at the beginning of the programme. The module leader will supply the assessment titles and guidelines/criteria to undertake the assignments and provide feedback to the students.

The course will prepare you for the next stage of your career, whether pursuing further research, or professional study, or entering employment in the field of Biomedical Science. The independent research project (dissertation) can be presented either as a traditional 12,000 word thesis or in the format of a journal article.

Learning and teaching methods

Full-time students spend two days at University, usually Wednesday and Thursday, and around 12 hours per week in lectures and practical sessions.

Part-time students attend one day per week. First year part-time students attend on Wednesdays and second years attend on Thursdays.

We teach using a combination of lectures, laboratory sessions, problem solving tutorials, video presentations and practicals. You will also undertake fieldwork excursions within the UK and overseas (additional costs apply). The number of hours of formal teaching will vary depending on your module choice. You will also be encouraged to take responsibility for your own learning by completing guided reading and various interactive computer packages. Based on individual circumstances the MSc Project may be extended into your third year of study and will be agreed as part of a discussion with the course leader.

Please note: some field trips will take place on weekdays besides Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Work Experience and Employment Prospects

- Work based learing project:
This optional module enables our students to gain 60 hours work experience under the supervision of an employer. You will also be assigned an academic supervisor who will advise you on a suitable employer based on your area of interest. Recent organisations who have hosted our students include Capita Symonds, Natural Resources Wales, Wales Heritage Coastal Path and Warwickshire Wildlife Trust.

- Employment prospects:
Graduates from our MSc Wildlife and Conservation Management have progressed to careers in the Environment Agency, utility companies, local, national and international conservation organisations, environmental consultancies, and regional and national government. Several others have progressed on to PhD study and into academic careers.

Assessment methods

You will be assessed through a range of methods depending on your module choice, these include: examinations, coursework such as writing reports of field excursions. You will also analyse case studies, undertake presentations, participate in workshops and analyse data.

Field trips

Fieldwork provides unforgettable educational and social experiences, bringing to life the theory and concepts of the lecture theatre. South Wales is a fantastic study location on the edge of rural and urban environments.

Cardiff, Wales’ capital city, the Brecon Beacons National Park and the Glamorgan Heritage Coast are all close to the University. They provide exceptional fieldwork locations that can be explored in a day. We make full use of these locations across our earth and environment courses to cover the practical aspects of our modules.

As part of this degree you will undertake residential fieldwork excursions, typically to Portugal and Mid Wales (additional fees apply). Some fieldwork trips will extend beyond the two days of study, but you will be notified in advance in order to plan appropriately.

If you choose to study the Tropical Ecology module, you will have the opportunity to complete a scientific scuba diving course, either locally or at a tropical location (for an additional fee which is approximately £2000). Previous locations have included Indonesia, Costa Rica, Honduras and Borneo.

The Tropical Environmental Monitoring module, will enable you to undertake studies in Southern Africa in locations such as Botswana for an additional fee which is approximately £2000.

The European Field Expedition module involves studying in Portugal. The fee is approximately £500-£600.

Please note: the exact locations of all overseas field trips may vary each year and is based on the area’s suitability for academic study and the overall cost of the trip. In addition some field trips will take place on weekdays besides Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Teaching and learning methods will include workshops, lectures, clinical assessments, student presentations and individual study. Clinical skills will be taught in small groups with students required to participate as patients, examiners and examinees. Students will be able to access remotely all lectures via a virtual learning environment; internet and online search facilities can be accessed via the university learning resources web page.

Participation in a clinical placement in sport and exercise medicine environment/sports injuries clinic; delivery from a wide range of professionals involved in sport and exercise medicine and sport and exercise science, and the opportunity to work with fellow professionals who are involved in supporting elite performers at national and international level will also be offered as part of the programme.

Assessment

All modules will be assessed by coursework and the clinical attachment will be assessed by a viva voce examination. Clinical competence will be assessed via an objective structured clinical experience (OSCE).

The course is suited to individuals working in a wide variety of sectors that involve managing people with sport or exercise related injuries, whether at high performance sport level or in a physiotherapy clinic.

The course has evolved thanks to input from national organisations such as the Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Sports Medicine (ACPSM) and international organisations such as the International Federation of Sports Physical Therapy (IFSPT).

It is designed to help you develop towards ACPSM Gold standard level, using competencies defined by IFSP, as well as developing the knowledge, skills and behaviours that could help you pursue a career in sport and exercise.

The course aims to develop your evaluative, critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and to increase your practical and theoretical knowledge of sports science and injury, so that you can apply these skills in the further advancement of your career.

Structure

The programme is modular, with four taught modules and a dissertation. Full-time students undertake the taught modules in one academic year, earning 120 credits, and a postgraduate diploma award. A dissertation module (60 credits) then leads to an MSc (180 credits total). After the taught modules, as a full-time student, you have up to a further six months to complete the dissertation.

Part-time students undertake the taught modules over two academic years and then have a further two years to complete the dissertation.

At the dissertation stage of the MSc, you are also required to undertake a research project involving data collection and some degree of originality.

Visiting lecturers, drawn from the UK's most experienced strength and conditioning practitioners, complement the lectures given by the Cardiff School of Sport's specialist staff in strength and conditioning and associated discipline areas. The specialist modules are accompanied by a range of compulsory and option modules, which are shared with other programmes in the School's Postgraduate Scheme in Sport Studies.

This project aims to enable students to demonstrate the skills necessary to produce a scholarly, in-depth, empirical research study, resource, or report.

- Research Methods
This module will develop your ability to design and statistically analyse experimental, quasi-experimental and non-experimental quantitative studies. It will allow you to appreciate the strengths and limitations of the different quantitative and qualitative research designs used in coaching and sport, health and exercise science; and synthesize knowledge and competencies gained during taught modules to produce a scholarly, in-depth critical review and proposal for a research study.

- Effective Coaching
You will develop an advanced understanding of critical self-reflective skills through the use of video analysis, which includes identifying key coaching styles, behaviours and feedback techniques required in advanced coaching situations. In addition, you will develop an in depth understanding of the interdisciplinary approaches that contribute to the coaching process including your ability to recognise and develop current coaching practice and coaching philosophies.

- Professional Work Based Development
This modules provides an opportunity for students to observe and participate in work-based professional environments, including identifying a work problem for you to overcome, which will enhance your professional and vocational learning and inform your own everyday practice. As part of your studies you will critically reflect on your learning throughout the work placement. You will, together with the module team, identify an organisation or organisations that are relevant to your field of study and that will be able to provide 140 hours of work experience.

- Developing Expertise in Sport
This module aims to enable you to develop a systematic knowledge and critical understanding of how coaches develop and maintain expertise in sport and the ability to critically appraise coaching practice in the context of current approaches to skill development

- High Performance Environment
This module focuses on developing a multi-disciplinary perspective of factors that act upon the elite athlete and how these contribute to the development of elite performance. You will analyse how the coach, psychologist, conditioning coach, medical staff and nutritionist assist and complement each other in producing a high performance environment. The management of the performance environment will be discussed and the many issues that underpin successful implementation of elite sport science support will also be analysed.

- Strength and Conditioning
At the end of this module you will have developed your knowledge and critical understanding of concepts and theories regarding strength and conditioning. You will also have developed the ability to implement effective strength and conditioning programmes into a range of performance environments. The above have been closely linked to the professional standards required for accreditation by both the NSCA and the UKSCA.

- Movement Analysis
This module aims to develop your awareness of the analysis of sports performance, with particular emphasis on technique analysis and notation analysis. The use of systematic observation techniques in the analysis of sports performance will also be considered.

Learning and teaching methods

• This is a hybrid course, which provides taught components and a laboratory-based research project.
• The taught part of the course has a strong focus on research methodology and modern experimental design/approaches, as well as the relevant Oral Biology background, thus laying a good foundation for the research project.
• Students will develop laboratory research skills.
• Training is provided to enable students to use research equipment independently.

Structure

This is a 12-month full-time multidisciplinary modular programme consisting of four taught core modules (part 1) to a total of 120 credits and a laboratory-based research project (part 2) studied over five months and worth 60 credits.

• Part 1: Taught Component

During Part 1, the modules are delivered concurrently over a 26-week period.

• Part 2: Research Project

Following satisfactory completion of the assessed course work and examinations in Part 1, you will progress to Part 2 of the course, the dissertation, which commences in April. You will be required to complete and submit a laboratory-based research project dissertation and present your work as a poster presentation (total 60 credits) to obtain a Master’s degree.

The research projects offered as part of the MSc course in Oral Biology are all laboratory-based. Research projects will be collated from supervisors in the School of Dentistry and their collaborators. We have an extensive collaborative network with co-supervisors/collaborator based in the Schools of Medicine, Biosciences and Pharmacy. You will be asked to propose a first and second choice of research project, and in most cases students will be able to pursue their first choice.

Those who do not achieve the MSc in Oral Biology may be eligible for the exit awards of a Postgraduate Diploma in Oral Biology (120 credits) or a Postgraduate Certificate (60 credits).

For the Postgraduate Certificate award, students must have completed a particular module together with one other module, which will give them the knowledge and the intellectual, practical and transferable skills appropriate to a qualification in basic science and its practical application.

Teaching

All taught elements are delivered within the School of Dentistry. Students may attend other Schools (such as Medicine, Pharmacy or Biosciences) to undertake their research project.

A range of teaching methods is used on this programme, including:

Due to the relatively small intake for the MSc course, most teaching is delivered via small group teaching, involving seminars or student-led discussion groups. Such a teaching environment should facilitate a good student-teacher relationship, where academic problems can be identified and addressed with relative ease. Students may arrange for additional mentoring as required via the module leaders.

Additionally, all students will attend Student Induction, which includes presentations on the structure of the course and each module, the student services and graduate centre, a tour of the building and library and IT facilities.

During the taught component, you will be provided with reading lists for each module. To foster the high research element of the course the majority of course reading will be via peer-reviewed research journals which are readily accessible via the University electronic library for e-journals. Text-books are available within the libraries on the Heath Campus.

Assessment

Throughout the course, you will be issued with student assessments that may take the form of essays, presentations and reports. These will be used to monitor your academic progress.

You must pass both parts of the course in order to qualify for the Master’s degree. You must pass Part 1 in order to progress to Part 2.

Module assessments are used to assess learning outcomes and allow you to express Master’s level concepts of understanding, analysis, evaluation and presentation. You will be required to pass all four module assessments in the taught element and the dissertation with a minimum pass mark of 50%.

You must complete each assignment according to the assignment submission schedule issued to students at the start of the course.

Career prospects

A Master's degree in Oral Biology opens the door to a variety of possible future careers. The modules are designed to prepare each student to optimise their learning towards their chosen future career. The core skills modules immerse you in the research environment, developing research skills which will be practised in the laboratory-based research project, leading to a dissertation. This should allow you to distinguish yourself in today's highly competitive job market.

We anticipate that students will pursue further PhD qualification leading to research careers in the biomedical or pharmaceutical industry or an academic career in biomedical or dental research and teaching.
