General Information

The UBC Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine offers a remarkable opportunity to study with numerous world renowned faculty and research programs. We are recognized as national and international leaders in both basic and clinical research. Experimental Pathology refers to research in any area of biomedical investigation that is relevant to human disease. Since it is necessary to understand the normal working of the system to fully define the changes associated with disease, the areas represented at UBC cover a wide range of fields and approaches. Work at all levels of biological organization is involved, from protein to lipoprotein biochemistry and molecular biology through cell and tumour biology, animal models for studies on pulmonary and cardiovascular pathophysiology and viral and bacterial infection processes, to clinical studies on human population and the AIDS epidemic.

We train students with varied backgrounds in science and medicine including: biochemistry, physiology, cell biology and microbiology/immunology.

The graduate program in Pharmacology was established in 1951, and currently includes programs in cardiovascular pharmacology, neuropharmacology, viral pharmacology, free radical biology, and drug development. Additional training programs exist in therapeutics, evidence-based medicine, and clinical investigation. The pharmacology graduate program has strengths in basic science as well as translational research.

The graduate program in Pharmacology is a component of the newly formed Department of Anesthesiology, Pharmacology & Therapeutics, and formalizes the Department's historical research and academic interactions. Within this new structure, additional research programs reflecting the close association between the disciplines of anesthesiology, pharmacology, and therapeutics are now available. Courses in pharmacology are taught at the undergraduate science, medical, dental, and graduate levels.

The program adheres to an 'apprenticeship' model of graduate training, in which graduate students work in close collaboration with a faculty member who is also their graduate supervisor. The program has strengths in projects covering a wide range of scientific and clinical areas of investigation. The primary aim of our graduate training program is to provide students with the skills necessary to conduct research in pharmacology and therapeutics that can be published in first-rate journals. Thus, an important factor in an applicant's admissibility is a matching of research and professional interests of the student and a faculty member within the program.

The graduate program in Occupational and Environmental Hygiene is offered by the School of Population and Public Health and is a complement to its graduate programs in Population and Public Health. The vision of the graduate program in Occupational and Environmental Hygiene is a world in which risks from occupational and environmental hazards are minimized by their recognition, evaluation, and control, to the benefit of workplace and community health and well-being.

Students interested in research or professional careers in any aspect of workplace or community environmental exposures and their impact on human health are encouraged to apply. The program's major research themes include acoustics, noise and vibration; exposure assessment; analytical methods development using immunological, biological, chemical and microsensor methods; occupational and environmental epidemiology; and risk assessment and translation of research to policy.

Program Requirements

Students in the M.Sc. program may choose to follow a project or thesis option. Because of the varied backgrounds of students, both options are relatively course-intensive and include specific non-credit requirements related to adult education in addition to regular coursework.

Students in the project option must complete 27 credits chosen from a list of specified core courses, a further 9 credits of approved electives, and a 6-credit project based on a four-month co-op placement (culminating in a comprehensive technical report and presentations) to make up a total of 42 credits of course and project work. After completion of all required components students must also pass a comprehensive examination.

Students in the thesis option must complete 18 credits chosen from a list of specified core courses, a further 12 credits of approved electives, and a 12-credit research thesis (culminating in an oral examination) to make up a total of 42 credits of course and research work.

Overview

Our Master of Science program is designed to prepare individuals to conduct research independently and in collaboration with other scientists. Students will investigate an area of research relevant to rehabilitation through critical analysis of problems related to basic sciences, clinical practice, or to development of theory.

Rehabilitation Sciences constitutes the study of physical and occupational performance with special emphasis on individuals with impairments and disabilities. It encompasses the three dimensions of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (body structure and function, activity and participation) and thus spans the individual, community and society. Our faculty have active research programs that cover this diverse spectrum.

Our faculty have an excellent record of scholarly productivity, receiving funding from provincial and national research granting agencies. Over 20 graduate students from a broad range of backgrounds including occupational therapy, physical therapy, recreation therapy, social sciences, human kinetics, and engineering have graduated from our program. These students have authored numerous peer-reviewed journal publications and won various scholarships and awards.

Graduate students will have the opportunity to study in state of the art laboratories, such as the UBC MacDonald Research Laboratory at St. Paul’s Hospital, the Thoracic Outlet Syndrome Research Clinic in Kelowna, the McGregor-Hudson Physical Therapy Research Lab, the Margaret Hood Occupational Therapy Lab, the Post Polio Research Lab, the Rehabilitation Research Laboratory at GF Strong Rehab Centre and the ICORD building. Office space and computer terminals are also available for students within the Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy as well as at the Department of Physical Therapy.

Courses offered by our team of internationally renowned scholars and educators help students learn critical evaluation of the scientific literature relevant to rehabilitation, analysis of theoretical constructs through of quantitative and qualitative methods of inquiry, and the design, execution and presentation of their results.

CIHR Training Program in Transplantation

The UBC Department of Surgery CIHR Transplantation Training Program brings together a multi-disciplinary group of mentors to teach all aspects of transplantation to trainees from diverse backgrounds in a way that did not depend upon their prior knowledge.

Outstanding graduate students and candidates for post-doctoral fellowship positions (MD, PhD or equivalent) are invited to apply for the CIHR Transplantation Scholarship Training Program located in Vancouver, British Columbia. The Transplantation Training Program is affiliated with the University of British Columbia and its teaching hospitals, as well as the British Columbia Transplant Society. Research projects available through this innovative, integrated program encompass all aspects of transplantation including, but not limited to, the following: basic and applied research into the immune system, stem cell biology, tissue transplantation, organ preservation, organ donation and ethical issues related to transplantation, outcomes research and clinical epidemiology related to transplantation.

Research will be performed in a highly collaborative environment with nationally and internationally recognized scientists. Trainees will have access to state-of-the-art facilities and unique resources. This program will foster the training of trans-disciplinary scientists and clinician-scientists who will bring novel insights into issues related to transplantation sciences. Applicants interested in Biomedical Ethics or Clinical Epidemiology are especially encouraged to apply. Supervisors must be a member of this Program.

The UBC Clinical Investigator Program

The UBC Clinical Investigator Program is designed to provide a combined research and clinical training stream for residents in Clinical Specialty Programs at UBC. The aim is to encourage young physicians to pursue careers as clinician-scientists and to renew the clinical academic faculty at UBC and other Canadian Medical Schools.

The graduate program in Human Nutrition offers opportunities for advanced study and original investigations in basic and applied human nutrition at both the master’s and doctoral levels. The curriculum includes coursework and thesis research through laboratory or field work in a variety of areas relevant to human nutrition including nutrient metabolism, diet and disease, nutrition through the life cycle and nutrition behaviours.

Research projects also examine environmental, social, and individual determinants of food choices and eating patterns; this includes better understanding of socio-cultural effects on diet, and the impact living in “food deserts” can have on good health.

International nutrition projects in Cambodia, Zambia, Rwanda, and other countries seek to improve maternal, infant, and child nutrition.

The program is enriched through collaboration with colleagues in graduate programs such as Applied Animal Biology, Food Science, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmaceutical Sciences, and others.

Coursework selected in consultation with the student's supervisory committee includes graduate courses in human nutrition and from other areas relevant to each student's research.

Research facilities are housed both within the Family and Nutritional Sciences (FNS) Building and, on a shared basis, in other buildings on campus. Within the FNS Building, the research facilities include various modern analytical laboratories and other equipment for conducting biochemical and basic molecular biological research, and computers for conducting dietary and qualitative data analysis.

Program Overview

The Neuroscience program is administered by the Neuroscience Advisory Committee which is responsible to the Dean of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. The Neuroscience program is flexible and is intended to accommodate the diverse background of students wishing to enter it, and also takes into account the broad nature of neuroscience research. The program accepts applicants with undergraduate majors in a variety of disciplines including but not restricted to biology, biochemistry, computer sciences, engineering, mathematics, neurosciences, pharmacology, physics, physiology, psychology, and zoology. Applicants who are not graduates of a Canadian or American university are required to take the Graduate Records Examination (GRE); students whose first language is not English are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Graduates with a professional degree (M.D., D.M.D., D.V.M.) may also be accepted into the program.

M.Sc. Program

A Master's student must spend at least one year, and will normally spend two years, in full-time study at the University. In the first year, the student takes the required course work and begins research under the Supervisor's direction. The student's Supervisory Committee gives ongoing advice and guidance, and may recommend further course work. By the start of the second year, a provisional thesis research proposal should be approved by the Supervisory Committee, while the student continues research for the thesis. Following submission of the written thesis and a successful oral defense, the student is eligible for graduation.

The Gastrointestinal Sciences, Immunology, and Microbiology and Infectious Diseases graduate programs have recently merged under one program director.

Each program offers a unique research opportunity in a wide range of research interests including Physiology, Immunology, Immunopharmacology, Microbiology, Nutrition, Parasitology, Pathology, Epidemiology, and others. These Graduate Programs provide state-of-the-art training opportunities with researchers from both basic science and clinical disciplines.

Through coursework, regular seminars, and journal clubs, our students are able to study a specific research area in depth while gaining a broad understanding of their discipline. Our three specializations are part of a variety of research groups and students are able to take advantage of interdisciplinary training opportunities, professional development activities, and attend conferences both within Canada and around the world.

The objective of the Microbiology & Infectious Diseases program is to provide educational opportunities in microbiology and infectious diseases with emphasis on molecular approaches and microbial pathogenesis and therapy.
