Animal Biosciences (ABSc) is a research oriented Department with dynamic hands on educational programs for both undergraduates and graduate students. Research and teaching programs in ABSc revolve around the basic sciences relevant to animal development and wellbeing. Our Department receives $6-7million in research funding each year which is used in part to support around 100 graduate students at any one time enrolled in MSc and PhD programs. Our graduate student population represents over 20 different countries which reflects our many international connections and collaborations.

We have four centres of excellence:

-Centre for Genetic Improvement of Livestock
-Centre for Nutritional Modeling
-Centre for the Study of Animal Welfare

ABSc offers two different flavours of MSc programs; an MSc by Coursework and Major Paper and an MSc by Thesis. We also offer a PhD program. Our MSc by Coursework and Major paper program is a one-year program for advanced training in specialized aspects of the animal sciences. The MSc by Thesis program is a two-year program designed for students interested in advanced research and potentially heading for an academic path. Our PhD program is a three-year program for advanced academic and specialized research
training. All of our graduate programs offer “hands on” experiential learning opportunities for research with animals to complement our wide range of graduate courses. Faculty in our Department carry out research in the broad areas of animal nutrition, physiology, genetics and behaviour and welfare.

Applied Animal Biology offers opportunities for advanced study and research leading to M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in animal physiology, behaviour, welfare, and management of livestock, aquaculture, and wildlife species. Graduate training in applied animal biology normally involves a combination of courses in both basic and applied sciences, with research leading to a thesis or dissertation. Students are expected to publish their research results in relevant leading international refereed journals. Coursework selected in consultation with the student's supervisory committee includes graduate courses in areas relevant to each student's research.

The program is enriched through collaboration with colleagues in other UBC graduate programs such as Zoology, and with agencies such as Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Canadian Wildlife Service, and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

On-campus teaching and research facilities are located in the MacMillan Building. Off-campus research facilities available to students include: the UBC Dairy Education and Research Centre in Agassiz; shared research facilities at Fisheries and Oceans Canada at West Vancouver; and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada.

Applied Animal Biology is intended for students who want to study and/or work with animals. It provides students with fundamentals of animal behaviour, animal physiology and related fields as applied to farm, companion and other animals. It also exposes students to the role of animals in human society and the ethical, environmental and other issues that arise. It offers training in research skills needed for graduate work, and (with appropriate selection of courses) prepares students for admission to veterinary and human medicine. Students have various options to gain practical experience on farms and in laboratories, animal shelters and wildlife rehabilitation centres.

Potential career paths include veterinary medicine, human medicine, biomedical research, animal ecology, sustainable aquaculture, animal training, animal nutrition, wildlife rehabilitation, wildlife conservation, agricultural extension and animal welfare.

Facilities

On-campus facilities include laboratories in the MacMillan Building. The Master of Science in Applied Geomatics is a two-year program focused on collaborative research, coursework, and data interpretation. During this joint program between Acadia University and the Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC), you will complete sets of courses at each of the two schools, and complete a research thesis or research project under the joint supervision of faculty from Acadia and the NSCC’s Applied Geomatics Research Group.

Through this program, you will become skilled in the assembly, analysis, interpretation and presentation of biological, geological or environmental data – addressing an approved research subject and problem. By completion, you will be fully competent to tackle existing or predicted environmental problems from solid theoretical and practical foundations using a variety of skills, and an array of new technologies.

You would normally apply for this program while enrolled in the NSCC Geomatics diploma program, and acceptance is subject to availability of positions, faculty advisors, and adequate funding.

Because Applied Geomatics is a joint offering between Acadia University and NSCC, you will benefit from the strengths of both schools – research and application of geomatics tools and infrastructure. The Faculty of Medicine of Memorial University of Newfoundland, one of 17 Canadian medical schools, was established in 1967. The Faculty is housed within the Health Sciences Centre in St. John’s, a modern facility which also includes the adult and women’s hospital, the Janeway Children’s Hospital, the H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre, and the Schools of Nursing and Pharmacy, plus specialized units and support services. The graduate programs in the Faculty of Medicine are structured to create an academic environment conducive to research training excellence. The programs are designed to provide formal instruction as well as to promote informal exchange in areas of health and health research. There are nine areas of concentration in graduate studies in the Faculty of Medicine: Applied Health Services Research, Cancer Research, Cardiovascular and Renal Sciences, Clinical Epidemiology, Community Health, Human Genetics, Immunology and Infectious Diseases, Neuroscience, and Public Health.

The Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics is actively engaged in a wide range of observational and theoretical researc​h on solar system dynamics, stars, stellar systems, the interstellar medium, the Galaxy, galaxies, quasars, clusters of galaxies, cosmology, and problems in general relativity. The department has close ties with the Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics (CITA), the Centre for Planetary Sciences (CPS), and the Dunlap Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics (Dunlap), which further enhance the opportunities for our students to interact with leading researchers.

Faculty and students use the major optical, radio, and satellite observing facilities of the world. Of particular importance are the national facilities: the Canada France-Hawaii optical telescope, the James Clerk Maxwell radio telescope,​ and the Gemini telescopes located at the world's finest observing sites.

The Herschel Space Observatory and Planck were launched recently and will soon be followed by the James Webb Space Telescope, ALMA, and the Thirty Metre Telescope. We have an active experimental program using telescopes on long-duration stratospheric balloons and a complementary program designing and building instrumentation for large optical telescopes, and for cosmological and Galactic research.

There are approximately 100 faculty, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and staff in the Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics, CITA, CPS, and Dunlap. Students benefit from direct interactions with the broad range of external speakers invited to weekly seminar programs and colloquia.

The emphasis of the research is on studies of processes and developing physical understanding of the atmosphere. The research commonly involves field or laboratory measurement and observation; data analysis and interpretation; and numerical model construction, modification and validation.

Program Description

Programs leading to the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees are offered under the joint sponsorship of the Department Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences and the Department of Geography. There are also several biometeorology professors from the Faculty of Land and Food Systems who can also supervise Atmospheric Science students.

Theoretical knowledge is an important part of this program and a wide range of courses are available. Courses can also be taken from outside of this list.

The M.Sc. thesis based program consists of twelve credits of thesis, 18 credits of course work and a thesis defence. Average time to completion is two years. However, this is very much dependent on the student so completion may take longer.

The Co-op M.Sc. consists of ATSC 597, ATSC 598, six credits of ATSC 548 and 24 credits of additional coursework. Co-op M.Sc. students must also have identified in advance an employer who will pay a salary during the Co-op work terms, and must satisfy eligibility requirements set by the UBC Co-op Program. Students normally complete this degree within two years.

Finally there is also a course-based M.Sc. option. This consists of three credits of a major essay and 27 credits of additional coursework. Most fulltime students will complete within one year.

The Department of Physics and Physical Oceanography at Memorial University of Newfoundland has a well-established graduate studies program backed by a strong tradition of research. The Department has offered MSc programs since the inception of graduate studies at Memorial in 1960 and its first PhD program was created in 1969. In the present day, our students are supervised by faculty with international experience, connections, and recognition. Our research programs receive generous funding from NSERC, the CFI, and other organisations. Our labs and computer facilities are equipped to offer students world-class research opportunities.

Research opportunities in physical oceanography include coastal oceanography, numerical modeling, ocean acoustics, ocean mixing, fisheries oceanography, laboratory fluid dynamics, ocean instrumentation, and operational oceanography. Research in experimental and theoretical condensed matter physics spans four broad themes: (i) biomaterials and soft matter, (ii) magnetic and electronic materials, (iii) nanoscience and molecular physics, and (iv) photonics, spectroscopy, and microscopy. Theoretical and computational studies include numerical and analytic calculations pertaining to condensed matter (magnetic systems, superconductors, polymers, carbon nanostructures, the glass transition, nucleation and dynamics in supercooled liquids) and gravitational and black hole physics. Computational research within the Department is supported by excellent high performance computing facilities.
