Applied Animal Biology offers opportunities for advanced study and research leading to M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in animal physiology, behaviour, welfare, and management of livestock, aquaculture, and wildlife species. Graduate training in applied animal biology normally involves a combination of courses in both basic and applied sciences, with research leading to a thesis or dissertation. Students are expected to publish their research results in relevant leading international refereed journals. Coursework selected in consultation with the student's supervisory committee includes graduate courses in areas relevant to each student's research.

The program is enriched through collaboration with colleagues in other UBC graduate programs such as Zoology, and with agencies such as Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Canadian Wildlife Service, and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

On-campus teaching and research facilities are located in the MacMillan Building. Off-campus research facilities available to students include: the UBC Dairy Education and Research Centre in Agassiz; shared research facilities at Fisheries and Oceans Canada at West Vancouver; and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada.

Applied Animal Biology is intended for students who want to study and/or work with animals. It provides students with fundamentals of animal behaviour, animal physiology and related fields as applied to farm, companion and other animals. It also exposes students to the role of animals in human society and the ethical, environmental and other issues that arise. It offers training in research skills needed for graduate work, and (with appropriate selection of courses) prepares students for admission to veterinary and human medicine. Students have various options to gain practical experience on farms and in laboratories, animal shelters and wildlife rehabilitation centres.

Potential career paths include veterinary medicine, human medicine, biomedical research, animal ecology, sustainable aquaculture, animal training, animal nutrition, wildlife rehabilitation, wildlife conservation, agricultural extension and animal welfare.

Facilities

On-campus facilities include laboratories in the MacMillan Building. Off-campus research facilities available to students include: the UBC Dairy Education and Research Centre in Agassiz; shared research facilities at the Department of Fisheries and Oceans at West Vancouver; Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada; and the Agassiz Poultry Centre, which includes unique poultry and quail stocks for biomedical and genetic research. Program Description

Programs leading to the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees are offered under the joint sponsorship of the Department Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences and the Department of Geography. There are also several biometeorology professors from the Faculty of Land and Food Systems who can also supervise Atmospheric Science students.

Theoretical knowledge is an important part of this program and a wide range of courses are available. Courses can also be taken from outside of this list.

The M.Sc. thesis based program consists of twelve credits of thesis, 18 credits of course work and a thesis defence. Average time to completion is two years. However, this is very much dependent on the student so completion may take longer.

The Co-op M.Sc. consists of ATSC 597, ATSC 598, six credits of ATSC 548 and 24 credits of additional coursework. Co-op M.Sc. students must also have identified in advance an employer who will pay a salary during the Co-op work terms, and must satisfy eligibility requirements set by the UBC Co-op Program. Students normally complete this degree within two years.

Finally there is also a course-based M.Sc. option. This consists of three credits of a major essay and 27 credits of additional coursework. Most fulltime students will complete within one year.

Starting in fall 2014, graduate students can enroll in the new Bioinformatics Specialization, as part of the Biochemistry & Molecular Biology Graduate Program. This unique program at the University of Calgary will provide students with advanced training in the development of computational approaches for understanding large-scale biomedical data.

Come study science in the Canadian Rocky Mountains! Research in our department is diverse, and at the forefront of many fields. Research interests span from biochemistry to molecular, cellular and developmental biology, genetics, immunology and bioinformatics, with applications to cancer and clinical research. Our departmental members are grouped into four "streams" with common research interests: Molecular and Developmental Genetics, Molecular Biology of Disease, Genomics Proteomics and Bioinformatics and Cell Signalling and Structure. Additionally our faculty are members of the Faculty of Medicine's research-based Institutes and Centres.

Our department offers outstanding graduate training leading to M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees and postdoctoral training. Effective April 1, 2014, guaranteed minimum stipends will be $23,000 for Ph.D. students and $21,000 for M.Sc. students. All students admitted into the BMB graduate program during the 2013-2014 year, and receiving the guaranteed minimum stipend, will receive a BMB Entrance Award. This award is valued at $5,000 for PhD students ($2,500 to be paid in their first year, and $2,500 to be paid in their second year), and $2,500 for MSc students. Entrance Awards will be reduced by any amount a stipend is over the program's minimum levels.

Those with outstanding achievement or potential will be eligible for additional support through scholarships and subsidies.

New students may spend their first six months in the program doing rotations in up to three different laboratories, although they may also apply to directly enter a research laboratory.

Calgary, which has a population of approximately one million, is a youthful, dynamic and friendly city. Situated one hour's drive from the Rocky Mountains, Calgary offers a wide variety of cultural, sporting and outdoor activities. Come to Calgary to be stimulated by the science and the scenery!

Our graduate program provides an advanced education with the goal of preparing students for a career in research. We offer an MSc degree and a PhD degree program, with most of our master’s students transferring into the PhD track during their second year. As part of UBC’s Life Sciences Institute students have the opportunity to collaborate with researchers from a wide range of disciplines. We also offer students who do not secure external funding stipends of $19,000 to $21,000 per year. After graduation many of our students continue on to academic or industrial positions at UBC or other institutions.

The program integrates academic centres in computer science, statistics, molecular biology, and biotechnology, with translational research groups at hospitals and at the clinical interface. Members of the Centre for High Through-put Biology (CHiBi), the Genome Science & Technology Graduate program, the department of Statistics, the Bioinformatics, Empirical & Theoretical Algorithms Laboratory in Computer Science, the Genome Sciences Centre at the BC Cancer Agency, and the Michael Smith Laboratories have been instrumental in developing the current program. The program also integrates other departments at UBC in the faculties of Medicine, Science, Forestry, and Land and Food Systems that broadly support bioinformatics research in the life sciences.

Students can enter the program in one of two ways:
1. Applying to the program by filling out the application form, sending all documentation to the program coordinator and if they are selected by a supervisor, they will be notified by the program coordinator.

The Canadian Rivers Institute (CRI), Stable Isotopes in Nature Laboratory (SINLAB), Centre of Environmental and Molecular Algae Research, Connell Memorial Herbarium, ultracentrifuges, microscopy facilities, cell fractionators, fish culture rooms, stable isotope facility, growth chambers, biohazard containment facilities and a greenhouse complex located on the roof.

We are associated with such organizations as NB Co-operative Fish & Wildlife Research, Natural Resources Canada, Hugh John Flemming Forest Research Centre, Agriculture Canada Research Station, Mactaquac Fish Hatchery, Huntsman Marine Science Centre and St. Andrews Biological Station.

We typically have 25-30 active MSc and 25-30 active PhD students at any given time. Our graduate students work hand in hand with faculty members on original research projects.

The faculty is also diverse, from chemists through ecologists, with expertise in these ecosystems.

Our graduates are well prepared for careers as researchers, program co-ordinators, research managers, consultants, data analysts and policy advisors in universities, governments, industry and environmental organizations; many become professors at universities. We have close collaboration with several research centres: Canadian Rivers Institute, Huntsman Marine Science Centre, and the New Brunswick Museum.

We normally have about 25 MSc students in the program and about 30 PhD students; many are well-funded from external sources.

Students in the Biomedical Engineering (BME) Graduate Program are interested in cutting-edge, multidisciplinary biomedical research. The BME Graduate Program enables graduate students to undertake MEng (Thesis), MSc, or PhD programs that intersect the fields of engineering, kinesiology, medicine, science and veterinary medicine.

The BME Graduate Program is jointly coordinated by the Schulich School of Engineering, Cumming School of Medicine and Faculty of Kinesiology, with additional participating faculty members from the Faculties of Science and Veterinary Medicine. The BME Graduate Program supports the University of Calgary’s Engineering Solutions for Health: Biomedical Engineering Research Strategy. By coordinating and consolidating complementary research and teaching programs across the University of Calgary and linking with health care facilities, the BME Graduate Program forms an integral part of a Canadian centre of excellence in BME graduate education and research.

The unique, multi-disciplinary, design of this program means our trainees have access to cutting edge research laboratories and equipment.

The BME Graduate Program was approved by The University of Calgary Board of Governors in 1997. It was initially funded by a three-year Whitaker Foundation Special Opportunity Award, part of a joint proposal with the University of Alberta. Provincially based activities continue to this day and are highlighted by the now University of Calgary-led Alberta BME Conference. This annual meeting now includes participation from the University of Lethbridge, as well as other western Canadian BME programs. The meeting attracts over 160 individuals and has been held every year since 2000 in Banff, Alberta.

While the BME Graduate Program is an established program supporting a diverse research community, it continues to evolve in response to new opportunities and changing needs of students and the biomedical community in Alberta. It is a key component of The University of Calgary’s Eyes High vision and supports both the university’s academic and research plans, particularly the strategic research theme of Engineering Healthcare Solutions.

This graduate program will give students advanced training in the Life Sciences in fields ranging from Genomics and Bioinformatics to Natural Resource Management. Students will receive hands-on training in their discipline providing with skills preparing them to work in both academia and industry. Our program will take advantage of the new Science Complex that will provide UWinnipeg students with access to innovative technology and laboratories. The program will develop communication skills to facilitate interaction with managers, policy-makers and the public, and students will place the results of their science in the broader context of society at large.

This program meets growing local, national and international demands in both the health and environmental sciences. Winnipeg is the nexus for health sciences research with the development of BioMed City, growing research capacity in the biotechnology industry, and the presence of provincial and federal government health agencies. Interest in the environmental sciences is similarly growing rapidly, and our graduate program will coincide with launch of the Richardson College for the Environment at the University of Winnipeg.

Our Mission

The power of science to change the face of modern society is growing at an ever increasing pace. Science and technology are tools that can and do improve the human condition in many ways. But the rapid pace of change also brings unforeseen consequences and perils. Science and technology cannot develop effectively within a social vacuum. The objective of this program is to train students not only in the advanced methods of science, but to place this body of knowledge in the broader context of modern society. In addition to conducting research in the BioSciences, our graduate students receive advanced training in both the technology and policy dimensions of science providing every student with a skill set that prepares them to work in both academia and industry at an advanced level in every area of biology.

Our Goals

Our educational objectives are four-fold. First, we provide our students with an applied education in the methods of science. Second, we educate our students in the methods of scientific literacy. Third, we educate our students on the relationship between science and the community around us. This will involve the study of science and ethics, and science and the development of public policy. Fourth, we educate our students in the methods of communicating science to policy-makers and the general public. We are training students not only in the basic methods of science, but how in to make a difference in society.

MSc degree The M.Sc. degree is usually a student’s first serious exercise in research and prepares the student for a research or a teaching career. In this programme the student is expected to carry out a research project, generally chosen and designed by the research supervisor. The project should not be open-ended, should have sharply defined goals, and should be of limited duration (2-3 years) and designed to give research experience towards solving a problem.

Admission:

There are three stages to admission to the Botany Graduate Program:
1. review by the Botany Admissions Committee,
2. acceptance by a supervisor,
3. final approval and offer of admission from the UBC Faculty of Graduate Studies (Graduate Studies).
The Faculty of Graduate Studies sets the minimum requirements for admission to any graduate program at UBC.
Given that a student meets these minimum requirements, then the biggest hurdle to acceptance is finding an appropriate supervisor.
