Your programme of study

Marketing Marketing is an incredibly useful area of business to study as the total subject covers anything from product innovation and commercialisation through to positioning in the market, defining a market, understanding the right methods to communicate and raise profile and conversions and provide a strategy to determine how to grow services or products in their relevant markets globally. At the more mature stage of any business or organisation the tools you learn are effective in re-appraising the business, product and communication to reinvigorate sales and interest and utilise relationships to improve and extend the commercial product or idea.

You can convert your degree from any discipline or add Marketing Management to become employable nationally and internationally. Marketing Management can be a stand alone advanced degree which focuses on the strategic side of marketing and business at operational level. It allows you to scrutinise all parts of a business to determine issues within a life cycle and customer acquisition giving you options and recommendations for trouble-shooting issues. It sits above tactical advertising methods by providing the necessary skills to analyse what tangible and intangible areas of the business are communicating in terms of the 7 Ps and communications channels and whether the problem lies within the product, its communication or a combination of both. It also operates at brand level to determine how well your brand is communicating internally and externally and whether all parts of your business are customer centric.

Not only does Marketing Management allow this level of scrutiny to occur but it allows you to develop a very strong range of skills to critically analyse competitors, the environment in which you trade, new trends which may impact, understand customer expectations and act upon them and avoid churn. These skills are also useful to you if you are contemplating taking a new product or innovation to market either within a larger business function or your own enterprise. You can also provide significant consultancy work to assist many types of businesses and organisations to effectively grow their business, prevent stagnation in communications and product and align their business better to current and future trends.

If you are about to start work or are already working this programme is a useful consideration to improving your career options, perhaps fulfilling a lifelong ambition to set up a company successfully, work at strategic level within a large scale organisation and problem solve the way it communicates or manage a marketing team to deliver successful campaigns which have considered all possible challenges. Other career options include working within established and fast growing businesses across industries and sectors or agency work which allows for a longer term approach to client work.

Your programme of study

The increase in environmental regulation and concerns globally about climate change, distinction of species, deforestation, loss of green belt and more has lead to an increased focus about how best to manage environmental issues longer term. Many organisations across all sectors have found successful collaborations and partnerships have not only helped them manage risk but improve their learning's within environmental management. As population increases there is more demand on planning to provide an effective level of environmental understanding and knowledge. Your programme of study

Ageing infrastructure from the golden days of the oil and gas and energy industry is now being identified for decommissioning. Some of it is in the North Sea but many other countries are increasingly realising that they need to decommission properly and effectively due to environmental regulation. Building a platform has provided a rapid and continuous learning process since the start of the energy industry but learning how to decommission a platform has now started a rapid learning experience about best practise methods across the supply chain and facilities available to deal with entire platforms and their various facilities are now an important concern.

The degree will cover all aspects of decommissioning process including engineering, legal, environmental regulation, business and project management risks and challenges across the oil and gas industry, You study the important aspects of offshore subsea systems, well plugging, offshore installations, project evaluating and economics, environment impact assessment process an regulation, and a group project in comparative assessment. You also look at process shutdown and disposal.  This is a highly complex area due to the level of environmental contaminants and different types of facilities to take down.

There are many oil and gas companies now decommissioning with the Brent Delta platform being a highly publicised example. You may be interested in reading about decommissioning from the Department of Business Energy and Industrial Strategy which gives you more information about the process, the companies involved and some examples of environmental statements and other useful information https://www.gov.uk/guidance/oil-and-gas-decommissioning-of-offshore-installations-and-pipelines

Your programme of study

Ever since the start of the oil and gas industry in the North Sea there safety has been a constant learning process within the industry to improve safety in all areas. It often informs other industries in terms of best practise knowledge which can provide useful learning to other industries. The knowledge gained in the North Sea has also been transferred to other sites globally to ensure risks are minimised when extracting energy. There are numerous risks associated with energy extraction such as the environment in which operators work in, failure in facilities and machinery, human factors which need process and safety factors designing in, and a very large ignition source. The energy industry can be one of the most hazardous industries to work in but due to the risks involved it can often provide a highly safe environment to work in due to the amount of measures in place to protect everything on site and that is where the discipline of Process Safety can ensure a very high level of safety in which to extract minerals.

If you want to become qualified in Process Safety Engineering and are from a Chemical Engineering background, or a Petroleum or Mechanical Engineering background but with good chemical/chemistry knowledge and you are interested in safety and process in this industry the programme will develop advanced skills in assessing risk, processes and analysis to continuously improve safety in the industry. The programme is offered in Aberdeen city in the heart of the oil and gas industry within Europe and often worldwide and it is informed by close links and support from the industry to ensure it is robust and relevant. Aberdeen has offered advanced knowledge and learning in this area since the inception of the oil and gas industry which cover the entire physical and business supply chain.

Courses listed for the programme

Semester 1

  • Process Risk Identification and Management
  • Upstream Oil and Gas Processing
  • Loss of Containment
  • Computational Fluid Dynamics

Semester 2

  • Applied Risk Analysis and Management
  • Process, Plant, Equipment and Operations
  • Process Design, Layout and Materials
  • Human Factors Engineering

Semester 3

  • Process Safety Individual Project

Your programme of study

If you are fascinated by our changing cultural life across the world and you want to experience being involved in communication the the festivals and events we have on offer globally, the cultural and creative communications programme offered by Aberdeen will help you towards that goal. In Scotland alone there are many famous festivals such as the Fringe and Edinburgh Festival, the Fireballs Festival in Stonehaven near Aberdeen, Uphelia in Shetland, and the Cullen Skink contest in Cullen to name just a few. The programme is very exciting as it is multidisciplinary and you can choose a variety of different options in line with your own interest areas. This is not just a typical communications programme in the sense of simply writing press releases or articles, it offers you the chance to get involved in the build side of things and the actual communication of exhibitions themselves too.

You may be interested in bringing static objects to life from museums, you may be interested in the type of environment in which audiences engage with culture, or have an interest in Northern World.  You learn some very useful skills within marketing and creative writing to enable you to bring creativity to life to promote creativity to others.  Other optional courses include art history, archives, curating exhibitions and Cultural Property Law. If your interests lie in museums you acquire plenty of all round skills to communicate within marketing, exhibitions and events. If you want to go into a gallery setting you still acquire these all round skills but your interests will be more in the fine art world specifically, though some museums often provide galleries. The business skills you can learn are very useful to market, protect and lead teams within the creative sector.

Career opportunities can be as varied as the courses you study or you can choose to specialise within specific areas of the arts. You can work in museums, private and public collections, galleries (Contemporary and Historic), heritage attractions, castles, stately homes, arts organisations and charities, local government and arts initiatives, festivals and within marketing for these areas. You can also work as a journalist, PR professional and researcher.
