The programme aims to develop the distinctive competences required for you to operate as managers in a global business environment.

These competences include a sound knowledge of finance, marketing and human resource management. In addition a range of communication, IT and problem-solving skills are also developed.

It is equally important, however, that you should develop the cultural sensitivities that will enable you to operate in different countries and in multicultural and multinational environments.

It is intrinsic to the philosophy of the programme that such sensitivities can only be fully acquired and developed through the experience of living and working in cultural settings other than that of your country of origin, hence the insistence on this programme that half of the study should be in an overseas partner institution. In addition, consideration of cross-cultural issues and different ethical viewpoints are built into the programme.

At the end of the programme you will be a different person; more mature and better able to cope with stress and change, more sensitive towards cultural differences, more capable of operating in a fast moving, multinational environment. You will have a unique combination of skills that employers will value.

In addition, you will have a network of contacts across the world, some of whom will become your close friends, a few of whom may even be your future business partners.

Why choose this course?

This one year programme offers you the opportunity to gain two Master's degrees within the international business field, validated by two universities - the University of Hertfordshire in the UK and one of our partners in the International Business School Alliance (IBSA) in Europe or the USA.

When applying to study at the University of Hertfordshire, please specify which one of the following specialisms you wish to study in your personal statement. If you are undecided, you may inform us during your induction in September. However, as the number of places on each specialism is limited, delaying your decision may mean that we will be unable to offer you your first choice.

The work-based approach of the MSc Professional Engineering enables you, as a working engineer, to obtain your degree without the need for a career break or long absences from your organisation. This degree will capitalise on your company-specific knowledge and experience, and we will help you to identify self-study requirements to provide additional learning, knowledge of application and demonstration of skill-sets leading to professional engineering institution membership and, provided you can demonstrate the UK-SPEC standards, registration for Chartered Engineer status.

If you would like to become professionally-qualified but are unable to commit to full-time study, you might like to explore the opportunities provided by engineering gateways. This site provides information on pathways to professional qualification for working engineers who do not have the full exemplifying academic qualifications.

Students may also be eligible for the MSc bursary scheme in aerospace engineering. To find out if you could be eligible visit the Royal Academy of Engineering website. Nominated company employee applicants must be working in the UK in the aerospace sector on the first day of the MSc programme.

You will normally study on a part-time basis for three years: two years to complete the work-based learning modules and a further year to complete an individual project. You’ll need to achieve a total of 180 credit points for a Master's degree and you’ll be expected to take 60 credit points of study in each academic year. You must complete your studies within five years. The programme is based upon the requirements of the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC), which is the standard for recognition of professional engineers in the UK. It includes eight 15-credit point modules plus a 60-credit point project which you undertake once you have completed the other modules. Students may start this course in Semester A (September), Semester B (January) or Semester C (June).

Teaching methods

This programme is work-based. The structure reflects the requirements of the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC). When you enrol on the programme you will agree and prepare a tailored individual learning contract, assisted by our academic staff and your company. The contract will take into account your present and future work-based activities and any constraints in terms of learning opportunities.

Throughout the three year programme the University will provide a nominated programme specialist who will liaise with you. Additional academic staff will also support you when you are undertaking modules relating to their area of expertise.

Why choose this course?

-This Master's degree provides the opportunity for graduates working in engineering and computing/IT professions to study, as part of working towards professional body institution membership and Chartered Engineer status
-This MSc programme offers the convenience of work-based 'learning whilst earning'
-Candidates receive the benefits of continuing professional development (CPD)
-A flexible way of meeting employer and employee aspirations without the disruption of losing engineers from the workplace

This master’s programme was introduced in response to the growing importance of professionally-managed purchasing and supply chains, as well as recognising the strategic value of skilled operations managers.

These topics have been high on the political agenda for several years and as companies have become more aware of the strategic value of supply chain management, salaries have risen rapidly.

Throughout the programme there also runs the thread of sustainability and social responsibility.

The programme is taught by staff from the School of Engineering and Technology which was recently awarded an excellent grading in the HEFCE auditors' report.

Why choose this course?

This MSc programme has been specifically designed to equip students for a career in Supply Chain Management and / or Operations Management. It offers a dual focus on these areas, incorporating subjects which employers seek in prospective graduates.

Supply Chain Management is a growing field as internationalisation and global outsourcing continues to gain momentum. Students will be given the tools to excel in this field, both through completing the coursework and practical assignments as well as through completing their own thesis project in this area.

The Chartered Institute of Purchasing & Supply reports that “Global membership has continued to increase [in 2011/12] and the number of people taking CIPS qualifications is at an all-time high”.

Operations Management is central to the successful running of any organisation, regardless of its size. It enables organisations to provide products and services in every area. Good operations managers are an invaluable asset to any organisation.

Students are taken through the various key aspects of operations management and through a combination of theory and assignments are given the tools for success in this area, culminating in a thesis project.
