The MSc Sport Management course is offered on both a full-time and part-time basis. The full-time route has a one year duration and the part-time route is studied over two years, both starting in the Autumn Semester (September).

The modules on the course will provide students with a thorough grounding in general business and management principles as well as the specifics relating to the area of sports management. Students begin the course by studying towards the Postgraduate Diploma. On successful completion of this they progress onto the full Master's qualification.

Work placement / study abroad

An internship forms an essential part of this course. Students work alongside an employer in semester 3 which allows them to gain some good work experience to further apply and contextualise skill sand develop their CVs. This internship also forms the basis of the final assessment on the course - the Management Project.

Students have worked in local sport goods manufacturers and clothing organisations such as Ecco and Adidas as well as with sports clubs, teams and organisations such as the Belfast Giants, Ulster Rugby and the IFA.

There are a variety of careers available to graduates of the course. Many students take up roles within the sports industry, for example in consultancy, marketing or administration. The full-time mode requires all modules to be taken within one academic year (50 weeks) including the dissertation which is taken in Semester 3 (between May and September). In full-time block mode students attend 4 blocks of 5 consecutive days at approx. 3 week intervals across semesters 1 and 2 with attendance required for oral presentations and/or coursework submissions during the examinations period between semesters.

The periods between blocks are used to undertake assignments and coursework during which the student is encouraged to maintain contact with the Module Coordinator and classmates via on-line discussion forums such as Blackboard Collaborate.

The full-time MSc Management and Corporate Governance course is usually taught on two days a week, with lectures taking place during the afternoon and evening. The MSc in International Hospitality Management is for those with a passion for delivering quality in the hospitality sector and who wish to accelerate their careers. The course will develop your understanding of the key principles of hospitality including consumer behaviour, localism, quality and service provision. The degree is strongly business/enterprise focused, providing you with in-depth knowledge of the key management principles - planning, leading, organizing and control - and how they translate within a hospitality context. Designed to be vocationally relevant and academically challenging, this course is for current employees seeking to up-skill and move into management positions across the hospitality sector, as well as provide graduates with all the competencies and qualities needed for employment as future hospitality managers.

Attendance

Commencing in early September, the course starts with an induction period of three days duration. As a full time student you will complete the master’s degree in three semesters / one calendar year. Part time students will complete a maximum of two modules per semester and it will take six semesters 2 to 2½ years.

A key strength of the MSc is that it is modular in structure and delivered in blended learning mode, with all modules being taught in 3 day intensive blocks.

Our novel delivery is designed to fit around your home and work life as a mature student. We recognise that being able to schedule study around your life-needs is of vital importance for academic success. Accordingly we have designed our master’s programmes to be delivered in compact and intensive three day immersive learning experiences.

The block delivered modules are supported with online discussion groups and three half day learning sets (tutorial learning support) per module. These days are set to meet with your tutors and student groups to develop your assessed work.

Semester three includes the three day learning block on research methods followed by a series of support meetings with your dissertation or business project supervisor between June and September.

The calendar of scheduled teaching blocks and learning sets is available to you prior to commencement on the programme.

The average starting salaries for graduate trainees in marketing is £21,461,the average the salary for a marketing manager is £37,305, a senior brand or product manager earns an average salary of £48,296 and the average salary for a marketing director is £77,799.

A unique aspect of the programme is the option to undertake a placement with a wholesale financial firm. Such placements are subject to interview by the firm and cannot be guaranteed by the University.

The programme is recognised by the Chartered Institute of Securities and Investment (CISI) and graduates of the programme will be entitled to associate membership of the CISI and exemptions from the following CISI exams (CISI level in brackets): Securities and Investments (IOC); Derivatives (Certificate); and Fund Management (Diploma).

The programme is primarily structured to aid graduates in gaining employment in the wholesale financial services sector, but would also provide a base for further research based study at PhD level. This well established and popular 'dual award' programme is designed to meet the needs of accounting graduates who wish to pursue a career as an Irish Chartered Accountant. It is an academically challenging one-year taught programme which encompasses both professional and conceptual material, enabling accounting graduates to study for a master's award and at the same time gain exemptions from professional examinations of Chartered Accountants Ireland. It is one of the leading programmes of its kind in Ireland and is the result of close collaboration with CAI, and the in-depth experience and expertise of the course team.

It is an aim of the programme to develop the high level of skills, understanding and leadership capability considered necessary for embarking on a career as a Chartered Accountant, and to obtain a deeper understanding of the contemporary problems and issues faced by accounting and business professionals. The master's dissertation element of the programme will enable students to develop their research and analytical skills further by completing a piece of primary research.

A highly desirable feature of the programme is the level of sponsorship provided by employers. Students being sponsored on the programme receive payment of tuition fees, generous book allowances and in some instances loans and laptops.

Employment prospects for students completing this programme are excellent, with typically close to 100% of students securing training contracts with Chartered Accountancy firms.

On successful completion of the programme, students not only gain a postgraduate qualification but also full CAP2 exemptions. With pass rates typically at 100%, students only have to complete the final FAE examinations in order to qualify as a Chartered Accountant.

The goal of the programme is to produce high-calibre graduates who will progress quickly through their professional training and advance to senior management positions within the accountancy profession.

Career opportunities for Chartered Accountants have never been better. Currently, two thirds of CAI members are working in industry, business or finance.
