Operations management is all about how to organise the production and delivery of products and services. From banks to factories, 90% of people are involved in operations. On completion of the MSc Operations, Project and Supply Chain Management course, students with three years' work experience in a relevant field of supply chain management can apply to become full members of the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (CIPS). As the course is accredited to CIPS, students with the required work experience will not need to take any further examinations to become full members of CIPS (as long as they have completed the required modules and the dissertation should focus on a procurement and supply related theme as part of the MSc).

Students without the required work experience (for example, recent graduates) can take the required modules and dissertation element of the MSc programme and on completion of three years relevant work experience can apply for full membership of CIPS. We are unable to answer individual enquiries about CIPS membership and you should apply directly to CIPS.

Career opportunities

The course provides general training for those who wish to take up specialist positions in operations management. For example, one graduate works in the quality team on a variety of projects in business operations around customer satisfaction, and another graduate set up a new company, Xpediency, based in Shanghai, working with UK companies helping them to develop and take advantage of Chinese manufacturing excellence. The Information management pathway addresses both the technical challenges of information capture and usage from big data, and the need for its effective and efficient management and analysis within business, scientific, educational, entertainment and organisational contexts. This MSc pathway will examine the entire information management life cycle, including data strategy, management, design and warehousing, data analytics and information governance. In addition to the need to work with huge volumes of data, the pathway will also address multi-modality, including un- and semi-structured data, image and video data, spatial and temporal data, etc.

They herald the dawn of a new 'Information Age' in which information, information systems and information technology are recognised as key organisational resources and in which management activities become more information-intensive. Yet the majority of information systems - including e-government, e-commerce, and e-development systems - are under-performing or are failures.

A key cause of this problem is the gap of knowledge, of skills, of culture and of language that exists between functional managers and information systems professionals.

The aim of this Masters degree is to close that gap by training individual staff to become 'hybrid managers'. Hybrid managers are those who understand both the job of management in its organisational setting and the role, management and jargon of information, information systems and information technology. These individuals will be in a strong position to lead the successful development and implementation of new information systems in their organisations.

At the end of the programme, participants will have been provided with:

An overseas field visit is an integral part of the programme. The cost of the visit is included in the programme fee. Part-time students complete the full-time programme over 24 months. Timetabling information is normally available from late August from the Programme Administrator and you will have the opportunity to discuss course unit choices during induction week with the Programme Director.

With more and more people working for international corporations or global international supply chains, the study of international human resources and industrial relations is becoming ever more important. The increasing globalisation of the economy and pan-national employment legislation also means the ability to compare processes and practices across continents is a sought-after skill.

It gives you an understanding of the differences between the employment practices and industrial relations systems of varying countries and multinationals, and how they are influenced by social and economic factors. You also look at the influence of economic integration on changing systems of employment and industrial relations.

CIPD Course recognition
This course is approved to the new equivalent advanced level postgraduate standard and you can enhance your studies by taking additional CIPD components that prepare you for CIPD membership. If you decide to do so, you can attend a series of skills workshops, hear from guest speakers, and complete a range of activities enabling you to develop practical HR skills.
You will join CIPD as a student member and on passing all of the modules of the Masters degree (including the dissertation) and the CIPD components, your CIPD membership will be automatically updated to Associate Member. Once you have applied your knowledge in the workplace, you can apply for Chartered membership.

Please note: There is a £450 administrative fee payable to Alliance Manchester Business School on arrival if you choose to register with the CIPD, plus you join the CIPD for two years - the year of your course, and the year of graduation. The current fee to join the CIPD is £178 for the 1st year and £138 for the 2nd year.

Teaching and learning

Assessment across the course units varies on the modules chose. It includes a combination of examinations, individual essay, course work, assignment and group project and presentation assessment. A dissertation of between 12,000 and 15,000 words is also normally undertaken.

Timetabling information is normally available from late August from the Programme Administrator and you will have the opportunity to discuss course unit choices during induction week with the Programme Director.

Coursework and assessment

The taught elements of the programme, carrying 120 credits overall is continuously assessed by a variety of methods (project based reports, essays), involving largely individual submissions, but also elements of group work.

Participants must also complete a 12,000-15,000 word dissertation on a topic of their choice approved by the Programme Directors. Students are encouraged to base their dissertations on topics of direct professional concern to themselves.
