Programme Descriptions

Given the ever-increasing volume of data that businesses have access to today, there is a demand for employees who have computational and analytical skills and who can help inform business decisions to increase efficiency and ultimately build a competitive edge. Our Masters in Business Analytics has been developed with just that in mind and aims to train students to understand the variety of business environments as well as importance and relevance of decision problems facing organisations and ways of solving these using a variety of techniques.

Students will learn how to apply descriptive, predictive, and prescriptive analytics of big data concepts and techniques to generate valuable insight that can assist with decision making. Last, but not least, the Masters will provide students with hands-on experience in applying these concepts and using these techniques and most of the popular analytics software through their projects including industry projects. In sum, the programme aims to equip students with the skills required to interpret, conceptualise and convert Big Data into useful information and thus enabling students to make better informed decisions as future business managers.

All students attend and complete four core courses in Semester 1 and four option courses in Semester 2. The programme concludes with a 60-credit Dissertation. Details of core and option courses are shown below.

The Dissertation: Each student conducts an individual research project on a subject within business analytics, chosen in consultation with an academic supervisor. MSc candidates write up their work as a Dissertation (maximum 15,000 words with a maximum of 10% margin either way), which is submitted by the end of August. Some Dissertation topics are offered that involve working with business, NGOs or other organisations.

Career Opportunities

It is anticipated that the demand for data analytics employees will continue and indeed grow as analytics is viewed as a key competitive resource by many companies. If market forecasts are anything to go by then the Big Data technology and services market will grow at a 26.4% annual growth rate to $41.5 billion through 2018, or about 6 times the growth rate of the overall information technology market (Source: IDC). This will inevitably lead to further growth of the market for employees in the area of data analytics.

The new MSc in Business Analytics will offer students from a range of degree backgrounds the opportunity to equip themselves with an artillery of concepts, methods and applications of business analytics along with hands-on and practical experience in applying them to industry projects in different business settings. The School of Informatics holds a Silver Athena SWAN award, in recognition of our commitment to advance the representation of women in science, mathematics, engineering and technology. The School is deploying a range of strategies to help female staff and students of all stages in their careers and we seek regular feedback from our research community on our performance.

Facilities

The award-winning Informatics Forum is an international research facility for computing and related areas. It houses more than 400 research staff and students, providing office, meeting and social spaces.

It also contains two robotics labs, an instrumented multimedia room, eye-tracking and motion capture systems, and a full recording studio amongst other research facilities. Its spectacular atrium plays host to many events, from industry showcases and student hackathons to major research conferences.

Nearby teaching facilities include computer and teaching labs with more than 250 machines, 24-hour access to IT facilities for students, and comprehensive support provided by dedicated computing staff.

Among our entrepreneurial initiatives is Informatics Ventures, set up in 2008 to support globally ambitious software companies in Scotland and nurture a technology cluster to rival Boston, Pittsburgh, Kyoto and Silicon Valley.

While your research studies are a perfect route to a career in academia, your degree could also take you into the commercial world of applied intelligent systems.

Software developers and the users of automated planning systems are among those who rely on the insights of our research. NASA and animation company Pixar are just two of the organisations that have recently employed our graduates.

Ecological Economics focuses on how to make sustainability and environmental management work in practice by applying economic principles.

This programme is run in collaboration with Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC). Graduates with postgraduate training in this area are in greater demand than ever before in business, industry and government.

This programme is affiliated with the University's Global Environment & Society Academy.

Field trip

To experience and understand conflict between ecosystem conservation and human development needs at ground level, we typically offer a unique 7-10-day study tour, usually overseas and in the developing world (previous destinations have included South Africa, Kenya and Tanzania).

Our graduates are working in a variety of sectors, including environmental consultancies; international and governmental agencies; NGOs; financial institutions; multinationals; environmental education and research.

The aim of the MSc in Banking and Risk is to give students the knowledge, understanding and key skills that will enable them to be effective Managers in financial institutions, especially banks, in any country in the world.

Recent events demonstrate that the successful management of banks is of crucial importance to western economies. Banking is an industry rather than an academic discipline and the study of the management of banks is multidisciplinary. The approach of this programme is to consider the structural, financial and risk and asset management functions of banks.

Whilst there are many Masters degrees involving banking offered in the UK, the vast majority provide descriptive material about what banks actually do. The Edinburgh Masters differs from the majority in that it has a major emphasis on what decisions Managers in banks should make and how to make them. The course has been designed by asking the question ‘what skills do Managers in risk functions need to be technically excellent at their job.’ This approach is unique and has shaped the content of modules and the structure of the programme.

The MSc in Banking and Risk utilises knowledge and skills gained through the research carried out by members of the Credit Research Centre (CRC) in the Business School. This is a leading international research centre that specialises in research into credit risk modelling.

A strong academic base, passionate faculty and international cohort will ensure a rewarding student experience in our city-centre campus. The school has widespread industry links and students will have exposure to a range of guest speakers.

Combining up-to-the-minute theory with practical application, our MSc in Finance will prepare you for a great number of career options. This new masters programme has been devised for 2017 by combining key elements from our current Finance programmes, including our Finance & Investment masters that was ranked 38th by the Financial Times in 2016, in order to give you the opportunity to tailor your learnings to your career aspirations. The second Semester of our masters programme is flexible allowing you to select courses which either combine different areas of finance or which allow you to specialise in one of the three following areas:

  • Corporate Finance
  • Energy Finance and Markets
  • Finance & Investment

This MSc will be the one that is put forward for the FT MSc in Finance rankings in the future.

The School's location in the UK's second largest financial centre allows us to attract visiting speakers including a range of analysts from the key financial institutions and fund management houses. Students are able to interact with leading figures from many major companies; this is particularly evident in the dissertation, which offers an invaluable opportunity to collaborate on a topic that has real, of-the-minute industry relevance.

The practical, theoretical and numerical skills learnt through the programme, as well as the global perspective that will be gained through classroom learning and discussions, will leave you well qualified for a range of finance related professions. We expect graduates to take up positions with companies like the Big 4, with investment and commercial banks; market and consumer research centres; fund management firms; energy utilities and consultancies, as well as with public sector departments responsible for the finance sector, energy and climate-change policy. Potential roles are varied and include for example: equity analyst, portfolio manager, financial statement analyst, product manager, commodity/specialist fund manager, business analyst, strategy consultant.

The School is a recognised partner institution by the Chartered Financial Analysis (CFA) Institute. Equally the School is recognised as a Centre of Excellence in the provision of postgraduate education in finance and investment by the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment (CISI).
