Teaching and learning methods typically comprise weekly lecture/workshops with the use of PowerPoint slides and other audio-visual teaching aids. The virtual learning environment provides access to the module guides, teaching and learning materials, and other resources. There will be opportunities for active-learning and formative feedback.
The dissertation is a self-directed activity guided by a supervisor. Assessment is based on the project report. Most of the accounting modules are assessed solely by examination, as this is a requirement for potential exemption from the professional examinations. MSc Management with 14 weeks Work Placement (Optional)
The MSc Management (with Professional Practice) incorporates a compulsory work placement component of 14 weeks which allows students to take their learning outside the classroom and pairs them with companies in the UK.

Brunel Business School is amongst the first few Business Schools in the UK to introduce postgraduate placements for students completing their Masters programmes as far back as 2011. This feature, pioneered in the UK for undergraduate students by Brunel University, is becoming more popular amongst more mature students, for whom such a placement can often serve as a springboard to often extremely competitive labour market. Postgraduate work placement employers cover all related expenses with many also providing a salary.

This requires an evaluation of the firm’s relationship to financial markets. It also requires an understanding of the theory and practice underlying corporate finance and investment decisions. The full-time Business Finance MSc programme is designed with four equally weighted modules in each of the first two terms, with three being compulsory and one an option from a list. The dissertation carries one third of the marks for the course and is undertaken after the modules have been completed. The part-time option is designed with two modules in each of four terms. The compulsory modules give an excellent coverage of core material in finance designed in a way to be applicable to business. The Business Finance MSc analyses the theory and practice of business finance, focusing on financial decision making within firms and how they interact with the financial markets and institutions.

Special Features

A key feature of this course that distinguishes it from other finance masters programmes is that it emphasises the applied aspects of business finance and financial decision making within firms. As such, there is more focus on real-life, up-to-date analysis of business decisions and less emphasis on the theoretical foundations and mathematical underpinnings of finance. This is particularly suited to students who would like to enhance their knowledge of finance within a business context but who have backgrounds in a wider business or management field.

Now full-time students have the opportunity to spend time in industry with the Professional Practice placement. This allows you to not only apply what you learn in real-world situations, but will significantly enhance your employability prospects upon graduating.
Another feature is that the emphasis on the applied nature of financial decision making is reinforced through the Business Finance Workshop. This is a series of presentations and discussions of cutting-edge topics led by industry leaders and practitioners.

Teaching

Effective learning is achieved through a combination of lectures, seminars, directed independent study, workshops, oral presentations, and varied assessment patterns. Use of appropriate IT resources is expected (e.g. electronic resources to access data, and relevant software programmes used in research methods). Dissertation research will give you the opportunity to integrate your knowledge of important themes, frameworks and research findings in business finance obtained via lectures, seminars, and workshops.
Students who successfully complete a professional placement will be invited to attend a tutorial day to give a presentation about their experience. An optional reflective journal during the placement may assist in preparation for the presentation and dissertation.

Assessment

All modules are assessed by a combination of coursework and final examinations. Students who successfully complete the taught part of the course can proceed to the dissertation stage. Students who do not follow the pathway with Professional Practice are expected to work on their dissertation in the summer and to submit the final draft in mid-September. Students who follow the Professional Practice pathway will complete their placement during the summer and work on their dissertation afterwards, submitting in January.

Professional Placement

All students who enrol on the full-time Business Finance MSc will have the opportunity to complete a placement. A placement can significantly improve your employability and expose you to real-world situations in the Banking and Finance industry, and importantly, allow you to network with industry professionals.

Students completing the work placement option will have a competitive edge in pursuing careers as high-level analysts, economists and managers in financial institutions, governments, financial regulators, business companies and central banks, as well as international organisations.

The placement option is available to full-time applicants and will last for 12-15 weeks during the summer of your course. Placements will begin at the earliest in the last week of May and will finish by September Some employers may also provide a salary.

For students who complete the placement, their dissertation will be completed after the placement has finished. Students who do not find a placement will do their dissertation throughout the summer and submit in September.

Information Systems Evaluation and Integration Group

Academics who teach on this exciting programme are part of the Information Systems Evaluation and Integration Group which is a research centre of excellence that supports a number of Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) funded networks and projects. This group is housed in the Brunel Business School in collaboration with the excellent-rated (RAE score 5) School of Information Systems, Computing and Mathematics. ISEing is the first multi-disciplinary research group to receive government funding in the areas of Information Systems Evaluation, Enterprise Integration and eGovernment.

Teaching

The course is structured so that full-time students take four 15 credit modules per term, plus a 60 credit dissertation module in term 3. Each 15 credit module demands 150 hours of study comprised of 22 hours of tutor arranged contact time and a minimum of 128 hours of non-contact student managed time. Each module has its own form of assessment held at the end of the term in which the module runs, and can include essays, projects and group assignments. The dissertation is an extended research oriented task conducted individually and offers the opportunity for students to undertake in-depth investigation in to a topic of their choosing. Students may choose to develop a project in collaboration with an industrial partner, which can be focused on business solutions of practical relevance (rather than theoretical research).

Modes of Study

1-year full-time in September: The taught element of the course (September to April) includes eight modules; delivery will be by a combination of lectures, seminars and tutorials/group work. A further four months (May to September) is spent undertaking the dissertation.

The MSc in Applied Corporate Brand Management (with Professional Practice) incorporates a 16 week work placement component at a company or a consultancy. This unique feature of the work placement distinguishes our programme from other similar Masters in the country.

The Applied Corporate Brand Management programme covers issues of branding in blue chip companies, the service industry, banks, petroleum companies, lifestyle organisations, corporate brand heritage, nation and place branding.

You will examine the core contents of branding at the corporate level rather than at the product level. In other words, teaching on the programme focuses on branding of the corporation rather than branding the product.

This interactive course, and the Strategic Corporate Brand Management and Consulting and Applied Corporate Branding modules in particular, allow you to engage with current industry experts who provide extra support and guidance in your coursework, classwork and presentations.

Coursework and examinations place considerable emphasis on the ability to think and reason critically, but constructively.

Placements take place over four months, from 1 September to 31 January the following year and previous placements involved roles such as project manager, marketing executive, brand researcher, internal communication officer and marketing officer amongst others.

Placement employers cover all student expenses and some provide a salary.

On completion of the placement, students proceed to find full-time employment in branding and advertising roles in the UK or abroad.

The purpose of the placement is to provide you with hands-on experience working with a brand consultant or a brand-related department of an organisation in the UK. It is an integral part of the course and you will receive support from the academic staff and the Professional Development Centre while on placement.

Research

The course is underpinned by the current research still being carried out by the staff in the former academic unit Advanced Manufacturing and Enterprise Engineering which promotes manufacturing as a discipline.  Thus the academics teaching on the Engineering Management MSc which were part of this unit have strong research portfolios in manufacturing. This research has been judged world leading.  In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, academics teaching on the course were involved with Brunel’s General engineering submission, one of one of the largest in the UK. The area’s percentage of world leading research doubled, with a significant increase in our research judged as internationally excellent as well. The impact of over 75% of this research was judged to be world leading or internationally excellent. This placed the discipline in the top 20% in the UK terms of research power.

Accreditation

The MSc Engineering Management is accredited by both the Institution of Mechanical Engineering (IMechE) and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). This will provide a route to Chartered Engineer status in the UK.

Teaching

Students are supplied with a study pack in the form of text books and CD-ROMs which are supported by e-learning web based lecture materials.

Students can take between three and five years to complete the course, it is entirely up to you how long you take but usually the minimum is three years, with students taking four modules in the first year, four modules in the second year and the dissertation in the third year. However, depending on your other commitments you can take longer up to a maximum of five years.

Assessment

Assessment is by a combination of assignments and examinations. Examinations can be taken either at Brunel University or in the country you are resident in (the latter on the Distance Learning mode only). We have an extensive network of organisations (universities, colleges and British Council Offices) throughout the world that will provide invigilation services. The cost of invigilation away from Brunel is your responsibility. The exams are held in May and September each year.

Research Methods

This module will introduce methods of data collection and analysis when conducting empirical research. This research can take place in an organisational setting. Both in the private or the public sector. This module is essential preparation for the dissertation.

Enterprise Modelling

Cultivates skills and knowledge related to business, conceptual and software modelling. Example topics of study include different paradigms for modelling (including business services, processes and objects), techniques for modelling the business domain and business behaviour, the relationship between business modelling and software modelling and the use of the Unified Modelling Language (UML).

ERP Systems Theory and Practice

Examines the rationale, theories and practices around Enterprise Resource Planning systems (ERP) and develops the knowledge required to understand the forces driving ERP design and implementation. Example topics of study include enterprise systems strategy and rationale, issues of organisational implementation and business services, processes and functions from an ERP perspective. The module provides an introduction to the SAP R/3 environment and the practice of business process integration in that environment.

ERP Systems Deployment and Configuration

Examines the implications of implementing ERP systems in organisations and develops the key skills necessary to deploy and configure ERP systems. Example topics of study include business process improvement alongside enterprise systems configuration and configuration management (including Master Data Management, business services, processes and functions). The module examines practical aspects of configuration in the context of the SAP R/3 environment.

Service-oriented Architecture

Examines the organisational impact of service-oriented approaches and the technologies necessary for the successful implementation of enterprise and web services. Example topics of study include issues in creating and managing a system landscape based on services, architectural approaches to service-orientation and web service technologies (including semantic web services). Practical aspects of web service implementation are examined in the context of integration via the SAP Netweaver environment.

Data Management and Business Intelligence

Develops the knowledge and skills necessary to support the development of business intelligence solutions in modern organisational environments. Example topics of study include issues in data/information/knowledge management, approaches to information integration and business analytics. Practical aspects of the subject are examined in the context of the SAP Netweaver and Business Warehouse environment.

Systems project management

Develops a critical awareness of the central issues and challenges in information systems project management. Example topics of study include traditional project management techniques and approaches, the relations between projects and business strategy, the role and assumptions underpinning traditional approaches and the ways in which the state-of-the-art can be improved.

Semantic Integration Frameworks

Helps you develop a critical and practical understanding of concepts, standards and frameworks supporting semantic system integration, with a particular emphasis on the Semantic Web – the web of the future. Example topics of study include ontologies and their uses, ontology management and integration, inferencing and reasoning for and in semantic integration, as well as semantic integration standards such as RDF and OWL.

Dissertation

In addition, provided that you have reached an acceptable standard in the assessments and examinations, you may then undertake a dissertation. Work on a dissertation for this course will normally involve an in-depth study in the area of distributed information systems and computing (eg, a state-of-the-art review together with appropriate software development) and provides you with an excellent opportunity to demonstrate your expertise in this area to future employers or as a basis for future PhD study. Additionally, you can now work on an internship during your dissertation (see Special Features below).

Awards

A master's degree is awarded if you reach the necessary standard on the taught part of the course and submit a dissertation of the required standard. If you do not achieve the standard required, you may be awarded a postgraduate diploma or postgraduate certificate if eligible.

Students will benefit from an entire module dedicated to the issues in employee relations which focuses on the key role played by employers, employees and their representatives in enhancing effective organisational working.

Key issues of employee communication and the impact of EU directives on work arrangement will also be considered. A number of leading edge elective modules are available on the programme including Global Diversity Management, International Business Ethics and Corporate Governance.

Aims

You will gain a critical theoretical and applied knowledge and understanding of human resource management and employment relations.

Graduates as prospective entrants to human resources management roles, as 'thinking performers', should be able to address business and professional situations knowledgeably, making contributions to improved organisational performance and delivery of sound personnel/human resources practice and services.

The course develops understanding of environmental processes and applies this to both the legal framework and management decision-making activities. The course seeks to raise your ability to understand and analyse environmental problems at Master's level, in order to develop solutions.

You will be presented with the tools needed for environmental management, including project management, life cycle analysis, accounting and reporting, environmental reviews and audits. The course includes the processes and legislative approaches related to the reduction of emissions to air, land and water, and the effects of pollution together with the legislative framework in which they are set.

Aims

This MSc aims to train you in critical analysis of legislative and management aspects of the environment. Critical analysis at Master's level requires understanding of the big picture as well as paying attention to detail. Thus we aim for you to leave the course with an ability to approach environmental management and legislation with an investigative attitude, to be innovative to assess a wide range of problems in the modern environment, and to explore solutions. The course places a lot of emphasis on individual student development but also involves team-working and presentations to develop your interpersonal skills.

This MSc is appropriate for UK/EU and International graduates or those with appropriate experience who wish to develop a career in the environmental industry and public bodies with environmental management and environmental legislation. This MSc in Sustainability, Entrepreneurship and Design blends a core training in sustainability with design and business, such that our postgraduates can be leaders and entrepreneurs involved in shaping a sustainable economy for the future. Practical-based professional development programme is designed to enable individuals to become leaders in environmentally sustainable enterprises - either as entrepreneurial new business owners, inventors or as change-makers in existing businesses.

The programme has a number of innovative features. For example:

- The fusion of environmental education with design, entrepreneurial and business skills.

- The programme will be affiliated with Blekinge (Sweden) University's MSc in Leadership for Sustainable Development, and offered with visiting lectures from this market leader. These will include those by Professor Göran Broman (founder of the Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development) and Professor Karl-Henrich Robért (Blue Planet Award winner and founder of the Natural Step - a global alliance centred around sustainability). Professor Terry Collins (Institute of Green Chemistry, Carnegie Mellon University, USA) will deliver programme material on green chemistry.

- Structural flexibility - so that the needs and desires of individuals can be met through offering optional modules within various themes relevant to sustainable enterprise (in the Business or Design Schools or in the Institute for the Environment).

- Practice based assessments - for example, the development of a detailed business plan for those who wish to start their own business, a product design for those taking the inventors route, or a research (PhD) proposal (for those eventually wishing to pursue a doctorate.

- Professional development activities - following the multidisciplinary learning programme, students will undertake a six month professional development activity in which - for example - they can undertake an internship or start their own business. (The provision of incubator space for these students will be an integral part of the MSc and is another distinctive feature of the programme. The students will also be equipped with pitching skills and a business mentor).

About the course

Information systems are becoming ever more central to society, especially in business and industry – and this course will develop your ability to use these systems to manage the complex challenges that can confront businesses.

By the end of the course, you should be able to:
-Explore issues relevant to information systems development in the context of modern business environments and needs.
-Express a rounded awareness of the state-of-the-art in relation to the role of information systems in the enterprise environment and the importance of strategic alignment.
