This programme takes a holistic approach and presents a unique opportunity for integrated clinical and laboratory teaching within these linked dental specialities.

The programme focuses on the recognition, investigation, diagnosis and management of patients presenting with common oral and maxillofacial diseases and will provide a sound grounding in the fundamental principles of UK specialist practice. It also considers and incorporates the basic principles of research that are relevant to clinical and modern translational practice.

Contemporary educational methods will be used to determine and monitor knowledge base, as well as using workplace-based assessments for clinical competency. A Physician Associate (PA) is defined as someone who is: a new healthcare professional who, while not a doctor, works to the medical model, with the attitudes, skills and knowledge base to deliver holistic care and treatment within the general medical and/or general practice team under defined levels of supervision. The role is therefore designed to supplement the medical workforce, thereby improving patient access.

As a PA, you will work under a supervising doctor or surgeon, and be equipped to provide holistic care and treatment within the medical model. This a versatile role, that can cover the primary care setting such as general practice or the acute settings.

Course detail

This two-year course is intensive and clinically focused, and involves many aspects of an undergraduate or postgraduate medical degree, focusing on general adult medicine, rather than speciality care. It is accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science and is based at one of the largest transfusion centres in the world, enabling visits to manufacturing, testing and tissue typing sections. You will learn from specialist lecturers based at the University, NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT), and NHS hospitals, and have an opportunity to become fully embedded in an NHS environment while you develop your knowledge.

The programme will give you extensive practical experience of transfusion and transplantation, allowing you to gain skills that directly relate to your future career. As well as being academically interesting, this continually developing area of healthcare science has a major impact on patients' quality of life.

The programme:
-Is one of just two specialist full-time courses in transfusion and transplantation, and is a recommended course at level seven in the Career Framework for Health.
-Gives you the opportunity to carry out your MSc project with NHSBT research staff within the transfusion centre.
-Has high contact hours, with teaching each day and practical classes.

It builds on the broad research strengths of recognised scientists, particularly in basic and clinical neuroscience, molecular and cell biology, neuroendocrinology, behaviour, neurodegeneration and psychopharmacology. This programme brings together expertise from across the many subject areas in the biomedical sciences to provide you with training in several key areas of current research interest. The programme focuses on experimental science and it is research-informed. It will provide you with practical laboratory-based experience with access to specialist techniques, in state-of-the-art facilities.

It is a flexible programme: you will select three units of your choice during your studies, giving you the opportunity to investigate a range of different topics within the biomedical sciences. For your final research project, you again have the flexibility to choose your research area from a wide range of suggested projects or you can design your own research project, working with academic staff. You can also choose a project offered at an off-campus site, such as Southmead Hospital, Bristol Dental School or the Bristol Heart Institute.

You will learn in small teaching and tutorial groups. The taught and research elements of this MSc are carefully balanced: your research project, for example, runs over a 12-week period free of lectures, allowing you to focus solely on your project.

This programme combines the academic excellence of the School of Experimental Psychology with the clinical experience, knowledge and skill of a large and well-established clinical neuropsychology department within North Bristol NHS Trust, a regional neurosciences hospital that has an international reputation for excellence in neuroscience.

The programme places a strong focus on patient care, diagnosis and management of a range of neurological conditions, and is delivered by academics and experienced clinicians. The Clinical Neuropsychology Department offers neuropsychology services to a broad range of patient groups: both paediatric and adult, acute inpatient and outpatient, as well as patients seen primarily for diagnostic assessment and patients seen for rehabilitation.

Services are offered to patients being referred from neurosurgery, neurology, neuropsychiatry, and rehabilitation medicine, as well as from physicians within the stroke services. Clinical services are also offered to specialist programmes of interventional neurosurgery, principally for epilepsy and movement disorders but also more recently for mood disorders. Along with working within the acute hospital trust, the department provides input to specialist inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation services for people with acquired brain injury.

All lectures are broadcast live online using Adobe Connect and can be viewed at a later date. Some units are provided in a block format of teaching (ie one unit over a single week). The others are presented as lectures on a weekly basis.

We have excellent industry links in the South West, with placements possible in nine different NHS hospitals from Cheltenham to Truro. You'll take part in three 14-week placements over the two years, where you'll learn on the job while carrying out primary research towards your final dissertation.

Format

Based on our health-focused Glenside campus, this course begins in January and involves classroom-based modules and clinical placements where you gain your clinical competence and undertake research. It's an excellent mix of study and professional experience. The focus is on using your graduate skills to be an independent learner and manage your workload effectively.

Assessment

We use a range of assessment methods throughout the programme, including written assignments, exams, presentations, interactive online assessment, objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) and continuous practice assessment in a clinical environment.

The course is assessed according to the University Academic Regulations and Procedures, and we expect full attendance at all times. You must take your professional practice placements in order, and you'll need to pass each placement before being allowed to start the next. There is always at least one external examiner.

Careers / Further study

Students graduating from this course are highly employable, and there are lots of career opportunities and areas for role extension in therapeutic radiography, including planning and dosimetry. Once qualified you will be eligible to register with the Health and Care Professionals Council.

This MSc is a collaboration between the School of Experimental Psychology within the University and the Department of Neuropsychology within North Bristol NHS Trust. The degree provides you with training in clinical neuropsychology and a substantial portion of taught content is provided by clinicians working within the NHS. In addition to taught content, the degree also involves a research project. Many of the programme units are provided in a block format, over a single week.

This MSc is suitable for students intending to become clinical psychologists, as well as those who wish to pursue a career involving contact with patients with neuropsychological deficits (eg head injury, dementia, stroke, rehabilitation). It also provides an excellent grounding for students wishing to move on to further academic research through a PhD.

The programme content includes the principles of assessment within clinical and neuropsychology, coverage of a range of neuropsychological disorders and pathologies affecting the brain, techniques for studying the human brain, principles of treatment and rehabilitation following brain damage. The programme focuses on evidence-based practice within a clinical context.
