Course structure

You will be following the ACCA’s professional-stage papers syllabus for papers P1–P3 as part of the postgraduate diploma/masters qualification.

You will be allocated a subject-specialist supervisor who will be available to support you, advise you and discuss your personal research needs during the year for your research project or dissertation. In addition, students have the opportunity to attend workshops covering research methods and ethical issues and to share ideas and strategies.

ACCA Syllabus Mapping

We have designed the university awards to run alongside the ACCA qualifications. The masters and postgraduate diploma are mapped to the ACCA’s P1-P3 papers.

You will also be required to complete a research methods module to enhance your research skills and complete a research project for the postgraduate diploma route or a dissertation for the masters route.

To become ACCA qualified you will also need to complete two papers P5, P6 or P7, this can be done alongside the Accounting MSc.

You can receive tuition for the professional option papers in addition to the modules in the same academic year or in the following academic year.

You can choose to study part-time (one day a week over two years) or full-time (two days a week over one year). If you want a more flexible approach, you can sign up for one paper at a time and build your qualification as you go.

Flexible study

Our programme has multiple entry and exit points depending on how many ACCA papers you have passed, or hold exemptions from. You can also choose to take this course either full-time (two days per week over one year) or part-time (one day per week over two years).

Students also have the option to exit the course early, graduating with a postgraduate diploma in Accounting by completing a shorter professional project in place of a dissertation.

If you want a more flexible approach, you can also sign up for one paper at a time and build your qualification as you go.

You spend around 100 hours of the course with an organisation related to the practice of physiology, which will allow you to apply your academic knowledge in a vocational setting. Previous students have worked in organisations including a cardiac rehabilitation programme and fall prevention classes with Albion in the Community. Many students have started their professional careers with the organisation that provided them with work experience.

Areas of study

In taught physiology modules, you'll experience and discuss the responses of the human body to various stimuli, including effect of environmental changes (heat and hypoxic chambers) and of ergogenic aids which can be used to simulate peculiar clinical conditions and help students understand better exercise tolerance. This novel approach to teaching integrative physiology will help you to develop a host of laboratory skills. You will be introduced to the latest in the research field of exercise physiology and will have an opportunity to write your own paper from your research project.

Explore astronomy and astrophysics at an advanced level, with an emphasis on theoretical astronomy. This course is for you if you have graduated from an applied mathematics- or physics-based degree and wish to learn how to apply your knowledge to astronomy. It’s one of only three full-time, broad-based astronomy MSc courses in the UK.

How will I study?
Teaching is by:

You’ll contribute to our weekly informal seminars, and are encouraged to attend research seminars.

Assessment for the taught modules is by coursework and unseen examination. Assessment for the project is by oral presentation and a dissertation of up to 20,000 words. A distinction is awarded on the basis of excellence in both the lecture modules and the project.

You can choose to study this course full time or part time.

Your time is split between taught modules and a research project. The project can take the form of a placement in industry, but usually our faculty supervises them. Supervisors and topics are allocated, in consultation with you, at the start of the autumn term. You work on the project throughout the year. Often the projects form the basis of research papers that are later published in journals. Most projects are theoretical but there is an opportunity for you to become involved in the reduction and analysis of data acquired by faculty members.

In the autumn and spring terms, you take core modules and choose options. You start work on your project and give an assessed talk on this towards the end of the spring term. In the summer term, you focus on examinations and project work.

In the part-time structure, you take the core modules in the autumn and spring terms of your first year. After the examinations in the summer term, you begin work on your project. Project work continues during the second year when you also take options. Distribution of modules between the two years is relatively flexible and agreed between you, your supervisor and the module conveners. Most of your project work naturally falls into the second year.

The automotive electronics engineer has to bring together real-time software, safety critical constraints, sensor electronics, control algorithms, human factors, legislation and ethics into a working package that satisfies multiple stakeholders.

The Ricardo engineering consultancy helped to develop this course, ensuring MSc students come away equipped with industry-relevant skills. Their continued involvement includes offering the use of pioneering industry equipment through the Ricardo Universities IC Engines research facility. They also help to cultivate future engineering talent, both locally and internationally.

On this MSc course you'll explore a range of topics including interconnected communication networks, entertainment systems, safety critical software, diagnostics, alternative fuels and hybrid technologies.

In the latest Research Assessment Exercise (RAE2008), our automotive engineering research group achieved an excellent rating, with 70 per cent of its research rated as internationally excellent or world leading, and 95 per cent deemed to have been internationally recognised.

This MSc is accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology on behalf of the Engineering Council as meeting the requirements for further learning for registration as a chartered engineer. Candidates must hold a CEng-accredited BEng or BSc(Hons) undergraduate degree to comply with full CEng registration requirements.

Course structure

The course starts in September. You will study four modules each term and will take exams after your Christmas and Easter vacations.

For each taught module you will have between three and four hours' contact with the lecturer each week, alongside further self-study tutorial and laboratory exercises requiring study outside of the class contact time.

After all eight taught modules have been completed you will then begin your individual project and masters dissertation stage. This final stage is full-time, but there are no classes during this phase, which ends in early September.

It is possible to study part-time study, by taking the modules at a slower rate. This can be tailored to fit around any personal or professional commitments that you may have. Please note, however, that there is no evening teaching so if you wish to study part-time then you will need to agree on study leave with your employer in order to attend the classes. The final project phase could be conducted at your place of work in some cases.

Individual projects have included real-time power-train modelling for software in the loop testing, a smart grid system using electric vehicles as an energy storage resource and an experimental investigation of novel fuel injection and ignition systems for a spray-guided gasoline engine.

Our research labs

The Division of Engineering and Product Design’s research and teaching laboratories house a number of engine test cells in which world leading research is carried out. Although these labs centre on cylinders, pistons and valves they are surrounded by complex electronic equipment to control the mechanics and to monitor pressures, temperatures, chemistry and capture high speed events on computer for real-time and post-run analysis.

Professor Stipidis and his team provide valuable state-of-the-art research into automotive communications architectures and also provide infrastructure for some of the laboratory exercises in the Automotive Communications Systems taught module.

The MSc can also serve as the basis for further study at a doctoral level.

Course structure

The course is structured around five compulsory modules that stretch across the biomedical sciences and provide the research skills necessary to complete the independent project. These are supplemented by optional modules which you can choose according to personal interest.

Research Methods is run as an intensive workshop week currently in the Christmas vacation. This ensures that you have a solid foundation for your independent project, which runs throughout the programme. You also conduct a literature review for the first semester, and engage in laboratory-based work for the second.

The course has an emphasis on practical applications of advanced civil engineering concepts. You will make use of our advanced laboratories, modern computer facilities and technical software.

The MSc requires successful completion of six modules together with a dissertation on an agreed technical subject; a dissertation is not required, however, for the PGDip.

The taught component of the course comprises six core modules, and you can either take all six of these modules or choose four with an additional two approved modules from other MSc courses in the School of Environment and Technology. The module gives you the confidence to model uncertainties involved in the design of structural systems alongside a framework to critically appraise probabilistic-based Eurocode approaches to design.

Stochastic models of earthquake ground motion, wind and wave loading are explored. Probabilistic analysis and design of structures is undertaken through pertinent random vibration theory.

You will become confident with the probabilistic analysis for the design against earthquake, wind and wave loadings through various checkable calculations.

• Repair and Strengthening of Existing Reinforced Concrete Structures

The module gives you an understanding of the types and causes of damage to reinforced concrete structures. It then focuses on current techniques for repair and strengthening of existing structures.
