Overview

Regenerative medicine is an interdisciplinary field, which aims to repair diseased or damaged tissues using biological or cell-based technologies. It is a rapidly growing area of biomedical research that encompasses stem cell biology, tissue engineering, drug delivery, and nanotechnology. This MSc course provides advanced, multi-disciplinary training in the scientific principles and clinical applications of regenerative medicine, and is delivered jointly by Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry and the School of Engineering and Materials Science.

Taught modules will develop a strong scientific foundation in the biology of stem cells and regeneration and the fundamental principles of biomaterials, tissue engineering and cellular reprogramming. Through an intensive 12-week research project, students will then gain hands on experience applying these concepts to problems in human health and the development of novel regenerative technologies.

Upon completion of the MSc in Regenerative Medicine, students will be well placed for further training at the PhD level or professional careers in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries.

Structure
The MSc in Regenerative Medicine is a one year, full-time programme. Students are required to complete 180 credits comprising taught and research modules.

Research Project in Regenerative Medicine (60 credits)
During the final 12 weeks of the course, students will work full time on their laboratory-based research projects. Students will select research projects from a wide range of topics in regenerative medicine. Examples include research on the cellular and molecular aspects of tissue regeneration, disease pathogenesis, development of stem cell therapies, design of novel nano-biotechnologies, or engineering biomaterials and tissue scaffolds.


Entry requirements
As a multi-disciplinary course, the MSc is appropriate for a wide range of students. Graduates with degrees in biological sciences or medicine will gain an in-depth understanding of the cellular and molecular aspects of regenerative medicine as well as an introduction to the interdisciplinary fields of biomaterials and tissue engineering. Similarly, students with a physical sciences background will have the opportunity to broaden their experiences and acquire new skills in the biological sciences.
Admission to the course is selective, and based upon academic credentials, research experience, and motivation. At a minimum, students must have an undergraduate degree equivalent to UK second-class honours from a recognised academic institution. Applicants are required to submit a statement of purpose and letter of recommendation with their application.
Applications are accepted all year round, but there are limited places to ensure high-quality training, so please apply early to avoid disappointment.

This programmes develop your skills and understanding in clinical microbiology, and gives you a thorough knowledge of associated subjects such as molecular biology. Your formal teaching will include lectures, practicals and workshops. The lecturers are specialists in their fields and are invited from many institutions in the UK. The practicals are extensive and give you the maximum hands-on experience in all aspects of clinical microbiology. The practicals are taught in a large purpose-built teaching laboratory.

Many students use the MSc as preparation for their FRCPath examinations and the degree is accredited by the Association of Clinical Microbiologists as part of the training for clinical scientists.

The MSc Aquatic Ecology by Research (AER) is closely aligned to our MSc Freshwater and Marine Ecology (FAME) programme. However, the rationale for offering AER is to provide a more comprehensive practical training by application in the laboratory or field, rather than by formal tuition in the lecture theatre. In essence then, AER melds both UK and European models of MSc. The key element is the extended project which provides all the skills required to undertake further academic or applied research and students will be encouraged to publish their work.

Programme Structure

Students are required to take three taught modules and an associated one week field training course shared with FACS students and then acquire the remainder of the necessary credits by completing an extended project aligned to cutting edge research groups within the Centre for the Aquatic and Terrestrial Environment.

Bioinformatics is the discipline tasked with turning all this data into useful information and new biological knowledge, a discipline in which there is a serious shortage of trained people. Without assuming any prior informatics experience, this course gets biologists up to speed with essential bioinformatics skills and provides the opportunity to apply these in a cutting edge research project. The course is taught by QMUL academics who are actively engaged in developing bioinformatics tools and applying them in areas such as genome sequencing, proteomics, evolution, ecology, psychology, cancer, diabetes and other diseases. Of critical shortage are skilled scientists in plant and fungal taxonomy, scientists that underpin much bioscience, nature conservation, plant breeding work, as well as underpinning the development of environmental policy. This course delivers vital training to fill that skill shortage. The course will provide training in plant and fungal identification skills, in combination with a thorough grounding in molecular systematics, evolutionary biology, and conservation policy, theory and practice.

Collaboration with the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew

This MSc course is delivered in collaboration with the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew and you will be based there for some of your teaching. The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew was founded in 1759, and has the largest and most diverse collections of plant and fungal specimens and associated biodiversity databases in the world. The combination of extensive specimen collections, databases, and scientific research conducted on a global scale is unique, and means that Kew plays a leading role in facilitating greater access to basic plant information, underpinning science and conservion activities worldwide.

Other taught modules will be based at Queen Mary, Mile End campus. You will also take a fieldwork module based in Madagascar.

Research

This research work is supplemented by lecture modules and seminars, and successful completion of the programme leads to the award of an internationally recognised Masters qualification.

This programme provides a comprehensive preparation for students wishing to progress onto a research career (bridging the gap between the lecture-dominated programme of a typical undergraduate BSc degree and the research intensive PhD degree), but the qualification can also be a real asset for those wishing to pursue other careers in industry, or in education. Training is given in a wide range of techniques to enable candidates to build up a substantial portfolio of experimental skills and thereby tackle more extended research and development projects with increased confidence. The practical work is also reinforced by lecture modules explaining the underlying theoretical basis of various research methods and techniques, and other aspects of advanced chemistry.

Programme outline

The major part of the programme is a research project on a topic agreed in consultation with the MSc programme coordinator. The programme involves a ten week intensive training, focusing on fundamental ecological concepts and theory in the aquatic realm set against the contemporary scenario of global ecological change. Essential theoretical, field and laboratory research skills will be developed and honed via comprehensive modules and seminars: state-of-the-art techniques for whole organism and environmental process research; converting science to policy or management and consultancy via stakeholder engagement; and scientific reporting. Two separate week-long residential field-courses will allow students to put theory into practice: one with our River Communities Group in Dorset on the R Frome, learning about and actually testing some of the ecological tools developed for bio-assessment; and one practicing skills such as hydroacoustics, netting & electric fishing, and observational census methods for cetaceans, fishes, and birds. Students will spend time shadowing the internationally renowned researchers within the Aquatic Ecology Group of SBCS before developing a research proposal and conducting a six-month project. These may be jointly supervised by colleagues at related institutes and agencies such as the Institute of Zoology, the Natural History Museum, NERC Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, and the Environment Agency, or indeed in industry. We will equip science graduates with the essential skills to proceed to further research via PhD or careers in the applied sector.

This course introduces you to the principles of experimental pathology applied to oral disease. It is provides a grounding in experimental method for dental graduates who plan to follow either a career in academic dentistry or one of the clinical specialities. It also provides an opportunity for science graduates to learn about oral disease, in preparation for a career in dental research.

We offer you a fundamental training in the principles of laboratory research methods and the range of techniques used to study the behaviour of oral tissues in health and disease.

Programme outline
Your programme will be modular, focused on acquiring laboratory skills and knowledge. The taught modules provide the basic understanding to help with the research component. There is a structured course of seminars with associated practical work, dealing with the structure and behaviour of cells and tissues in health and disease. This core begins with fundamental and general concepts of cell biology and continues with the application of these concepts to a consideration of oral and dental disease. Related disciplines such as oral microbiology and immunology are also covered.

Throughout the programme, emphasis is placed on the evidence upon which the concepts are based and the way in which such evidence is obtained by observation and experiment. You are actively encouraged to take part in the seminars.

Running in parallel with the core programme are several related series of seminars dealing with research methods, statistics and techniques of fundamental importance to experimental pathology such as tissue culture, molecular biological techniques, immunocytochemistry, light and electron microscopy. Advances in technology and informatics have fuelled an exponential growth in genomics research which in turn has transformed our understanding of disease biology and opening new avenues in drug discovery and patient treatment. Genomics has strong potential to impact patient care but will require highly trained professionals to implement it both at the level of the health care system, the pharmaceutical industry, and the broader biomedical sector.

The MSc Programme in Genomic Medicine is designed to provide healthcare professionals with a multi-disciplinary perspective on genomics and its application in medicine in particular rare genetic diseases, cancer and infection.

The overall aim of the programme is to offer participants the knowledge and training in genomics required to provide, develop and advance specialist scientific services around genomic medicine within healthcare systems. The programme will work closely with Genomics England to train students to analyse high quality genomic data and offer them the possibility to interact with international experts in this field. Working directly with patient data from the 100,000 genomes project will offer students hands on experience on how genomics may be applied to diagnosis and patient treatment. The course will offer opportunities for research and work experience projects in the participating NHS Trusts under UCL Partners.
