This programme equips graduates with the skills required for professional roles involving collection, management, analysis and presentation of landscape ecology and environmental conservation datasets using Geographical Information Systems.

In both the UK and overseas the concept of landscape scale land management has gained acceptance over the last decade. The implementation of environmental conservation policies and strategies based on a landscape ecology approach is increasingly dependent on spatial data that are managed and manipulated within a GIS. As a result, the Ecological Skills Gap Project has identified a clear need for ecologists with experience of GIS and for GIS specialists with an understanding of the environmental data they are being asked to manage and manipulate within a GIS.

This programme is designed to address these skills gaps and is structured around three compulsory conservation courses that integrate theoretical and practical aspects of contemporary conservation and environmental management, and three compulsory courses covering the principles and implementation of GIS. Additionally students take a compulsory Professional Practice for GI course, and one optional course. The MSc programme culminates in a third term with the dissertation, an individual piece of research focused on the application of GIS techniques to a specific landscape ecology problem.

The aims of the programme are:

- To provide landscape ecology practitioners and conservation managers with an appreciation of the merits and limitations of the spatial data that are potentially available to them.

- To provide an understanding of how these data can potentially be processed and managed within a GI System; encompassing data collection strategies, errors, uncertainties, GIS modelling, and GIS decision-support systems.

- To provide the knowledge and skills to confidently operate and manage a GI system for landscape ecology and environmental conservation data sets.

This programme is for individuals already working in environmental conservation who seek to broaden or update their knowledge, and for graduates who wish to become professionally involved in conservation and environmental management.

Professional and conservation organisations have advised on the content of this degree, ensuring strong links between the programme and the needs of the conservation industry and it has received two awards for 'Best Practice' from the CIEEM. The programme is structured around six compulsory courses that integrate theoretical and practical aspects of contemporary conservation and environmental management.

Students develop an interdisciplinary understanding of modern-day conservation and environmental management, and gain a practical understanding of ecological techniques and strategies. They also acquire the skills to critically apply environmental management techniques and methods to practical situations and to understand decision making processes and the underlying criteria and values. In addition, they gain specific knowledge and skills through their chosen optional courses.

During June to September students undertake a research project in a specialist area of their choice, often in collaboration with an external organisation. There is a high component of practical work including fieldtrips.

This programme offers the opportunity to gain a qualification by following a structured route in scientific research. It is closely linked with parallel MPhil and PhD programmes of work. Students can select from a wide range of theory courses appropriate to their individual research topic across the disciplines of chemical and life sciences. The programme comprises taught courses (60 credits) and a research project (120 credits) and is suitable for students who want to gain a postgraduate research qualification and strengthen their practical skills. The research project may be partially assessed by the publication of an original paper rather than a traditional thesis. The programme is designed to provide a comprehensive insight into the mechanics of research from both the literature and experimental perspectives. On successful completion of the programme, students are able to critically assess the primary research literature in depth, and appreciate the significance of the economic, environmental and social impact of research and development in a competitive industrial world. They can also design and carry out experiments to test hypotheses, and compose and present scientific information for publication purposes. The university has an extensive network of overseas contacts, with staff based in, or regularly visiting, some 40 to 50 countries. Overseas students are able to obtain an MSc by Research by attending classes for three to four months in the UK, with a project based and supervised in their own country, subject to approval by the Faculty of Engineering and Science.

This programme is taught as either a classic one-year programme, or delivered through blended e-learning on a two-year part-time basis.

The degree builds on Pfizer Ltd's 'in house' training programme. It teaches how fundamental science is applied to the discovery and development of medicines. The programme was designed and conceived by industry experts in drug discovery and will be delivered and assessed by subject matter experts from both industry and the university.

The course will comprise of 60 credits at certificate level, 60 credits at diploma level and 60 credits at Master's level; and as such intermediate exit awards are available.

For those students based overseas not wishing to participate in a laboratory-based research project at Medway School of Pharmacy the Extended Dissertation module (at Masters level) is compulsory. Please contact the Department for more details.
