The biological basis of behaviour is an increasingly important aspect of understanding health and illness. You will develop an in-depth understanding of topic areas and mechanisms involved in the maintenance of health and well-being, and the development and treatment of disease. This rewarding programme provides an ideal platform for the basis for further post-graduate research, a career in consultancy-based research, or your development of evidence-based practice in health care. You will learn to analyse the contributions of different disciplinary and theoretical perspectives to the understanding of health and wellbeing, disease and its treatment, and care.
The programme will introduce you to a wide range of health issues from stress to sleep; it considers the aetiology and symptomology of the body’s complex processes with a thought-provoking and challenging syllabus.
We offer a diverse range of modules to build your knowledge and enable you to focus on topics that interest you. Recent examples of these topics included: the psychophysiology of health, where you will examine the effects of stress in relation to health and well-being, health research methods, and public health and social, psychological and biological approaches to health and disease.

The programme gives you the opportunity to critically examine the theoretical bases of science in understanding sport and exercise, the assessment methods and their practical application within physiology, psychology and biomechanics.
This programme will enable you to gain a critical appreciation of a multi-disciplinary approach to contemporary issues in sport and exercise science, along with the assessment of performance and support for the exerciser and athlete. You will be equipped to critically analyse and evaluate complex and specialised assessment and support techniques in sport and exercise, and to select the most appropriate methods for clients from one (or all) of the disciplines of biomechanics, physiology and psychology.
In helping you build on your practical skills, the course will enable students to understand the relationships between theoretical concepts and current techniques of assessment and support, through a range of practice-based learning and assessment where you will benefit from the feedback of staff and peers. This course will give you opportunities to gain knowledge and understanding in applied ways in relation to sport and exercise science field.
You will also have the opportunity to conduct independent research project with the support and supervision from our staff. You will have access to the state-of-the-art facilities in our Sport and Exercise Research Centre.
You will be able to select a range of modules from the three key disciplines in the programme, psychology, biomechanics and physiology, with a wide selection of optional modules and the chance to undertake your own research in an area that interests you.

Our programme equips you for a career in sport, exercise and clinical biomechanics. You will gain in-depth knowledge into how theoretical biomechanics can be applied to the understanding and development of movement for sport, exercise and clinical applications.
Our MSc in Biomechanics will enable you to support the physical development and health of sports people engaged in intensive training and exercise. This programme critically examines the theoretical basis of methods of assessment and the practical application of data within biomechanics. It offers you a means of studying biomechanics from a discipline-specific standpoint.

The Sport and Exercise Research Centre houses one of the best sport science laboratory facilities in London. You will have access to our biomechanics laboratory and physiology laboratory during your study here.
You will be able to collaborate with our members of the Sport and Exercise Science Research Centre engaged in range of multidisciplinary research themes including: Neuromusculoskeletal Function through the Ages; Extreme Environments; Amputee Mobility; Performance and Well-Being; and Exercise Adherence and Health.
Roehampton has over twenty-five years' experience of teaching Sport Science and has run Masters level Sport Science programmes since 1997. Over this time, we have constantly embraced changes in the profession and utilised student feedback to ensure that our programmes are relevant, inspiring and provided to the high standards.
You will study modules that provide both the theory and hands-on application in areas such as biomechanical assessment/support techniques, neuromuscular function, and biomechanics of gait. The teaching in these modules is both in-depth and highly practical, with extensive use of laboratory facilities such as Vicon 3D motion capture system, 2D video analysis, Kistler force plates, isokinetic dynamometers, ultrasound scanners, electromyography, and neuromuscular electrical stimulator.
You will also have the opportunity to gain two weeks work placement in gait laboratories of Guys and St Thomas’s Hospital and Queen Mary’s Hospital. Through this placement our previous graduates have developed their clinical gait analysis skills and have enhanced their employability within the field of Biomechanics.
In your research dissertation, you will have the opportunity to perform focused research in a project to be developed with our staff member with the view for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.

You will automatically become a part of the Sports and Exercise Research Centre, a research group committed to excellence in the field of sport, exercise and health sciences. Our research facilities have recently received over £250,000 of investment in state-of-the-art equipment located in specialist reach and teaching spaces - a physiology laboratory, walk-in environment chamber, cell-culture and wet laboratories, and a biomechanics laboratory.
In this practical and theoretical taught programme, you will learn in-depth the advantages and disadvantages of adopting particular protocols and practices and consider an integrated approach to physiological assessment when working with your clients. You will study the structure and function of tissues of the musculoskeletal system, from basic scientific mechanisms to applications in sports performance, injury, disease, and treatment.
Our hands-on teaching approach will enable you to analyse contemporary assessment techniques used in the testing of exercise and sport participants, focussing primarily on those required for the assessment of the elite performer. At the same time, you will be able to develop your own laboratory reports by using theory in the completion of a client specific assessment. This will demonstrate the assessment procedure, analysis and interpretation according to your research findings.

This research-intensive programme is driven by contemporary policy debates. It will give you the opportunity to develop, undertake and publish your own original research.
On this course you will look at how different societies and people understand and react to health and illness. The course will cover the range of societies in our world, looking at responses to health from using ritual to cutting edge technologies and organ transplantation. You will also focus on how our evolving healthcare methods impact on how people see themselves, their families and communities.
As well as providing a wide knowledge base, this course will encourage you to develop your expertise in a number of areas in the anthropology of health, honing your critical, interpretative and evaluative skills, and undertaking continuous personal and professional development.
You will be supported by experienced staff whose research has made a significant impact on global society, and receive training in qualitative and quantitative anthropological research methods relevant to undertaking an extended research project. Based on the wide variety of staff expertise, some of the topics you can currently research may include HIV/AIDS care and intervention, pharmaceuticals, wellbeing and arts health, religion and traditional health care systems, human variation and adaptation. The research that you undertake will be of journal quality and published.
Studying the anthropology of health at Roehampton will give you a global perspective on the discipline, and a wide view of possible career paths. In an increasingly globalised world, you will be equipped with the necessary skills to understand and interpret the cultural patterns in diverse health fields and organisations, enabling you to progress to PhD-level study or a career in the complex and cultural field of healthcare.
In this programme you will have a comprehensive introduction to the anthropology of health. Initial modules will allow you to study the diverse ideas and practice in healthcare, and how these impact on individual and community formation. For example, how do new reproductive technologies impact on notions of kinship within a family and community? How do different medical systems within a community relate to each other? How do organ transplants influence concepts of personhood and the self?
You will also study, through a selection of case studies, the idea of health, wellbeing and illness as states within a continuous process, using the idea of a life-cycle as a model. This module will investigate the ways in which people strive to lead healthy and fulfilling lives and respond to episodes of ill-health and unease. It places medical issues in a context of people’s quest for continuity and their struggles to cope with uncertainty.
Other modules on the course will cover topics such as sociocultural/biological/evolutionary concepts of health; mental and environmental health; food/nutrition; leisure and wellbeing; arts health; and disability. You will also explore lifecycles to understand health issues such as: birth to death, reproduction, ageing and the body, in/fertility, new reproductive technologies, life history narrative, childhood, puberty, rites of passage.
You will undertake an extended piece of original research showing a sustained engagement with an issue in the anthropology of health. It is supported by supervision and is the culmination of the MRes Anthropology of Health programme. This dissertation is supported by the preparation of a policy document or paper for publication.
The programme will prepare you for PhD study in Anthropology (health and related areas), senior healthcare policy and advisory work, advanced healthcare delivery in diverse and multicultural settings, and overseas development work.
