Our Conservation and Biodiversity Masters offers great flexibility, with a wide choice of topics from across disciplines, enabling you to construct a programme that suits your individual interests and career ambitions in this increasingly important field.

You will have the opportunity to gain a solid foundation in the key theoretical issues, such as wildlife population dynamics and conservation biology, and learn how these are applied to real-world problems, such as managing habitats or dealing with wildlife-human conflicts. Additionally, you will gain and develop the key skills that are valued by employers, such as problem solving, report writing, data analysis and presentation skills.

You will complete six taught modules delivered by world-leading researchers from our three internationally-renowned partner organisations: Lancaster Environment Centre, Rothamsted Research and the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology. This gives you the opportunity to interact with a wide range of expert specialists, including lake ecologists, political ecologists, food security biologists, earth observation geographers, social scientists and others, so that you can put your learning into a wider context.

Several modules include field trips to the beautiful and topographically varied countryside around Lancaster, and beyond. If you want to travel further afield, we have research projects and partners across the globe that provide exiting opportunities when it comes to selecting your dissertation project.

This project forms a substantial part of your Masters degree. It will enhance your practical and analytical skills and give you the opportunity to apply your learning to a real-world challenge. This may involve a doing a project with a government agency or conservation organisation through our award winning Centre for Global Eco-innovation, which uses our excellent links with the environmental and conservation sectors. Examples of previous dissertation projects are:

The need for sustainable development is a global concern. This flexible Masters degree prepares you to address the challenges faced in safeguarding the planet’s ecosystems in a fast developing world.

This programme is ideal if you want a career in the environmental field, in the private, public, or not-for-profit sectors. It can be taken as an MA or MSc depending on your dissertation topic.

You will be based within one of the largest groups of environmental scientists in the UK and will be taught by world-leading researchers from our three internationally-renowned partner organisations: Lancaster Environment Centre, Rothamsted Research and the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology, which has a government laboratory at Lancaster. Their expertise spans a wide range of disciplines in the natural and social sciences including the sustainable use of resources, food security, energy, water and soil science, political ecology and environmental pollution.

You will complete six taught modules and a dissertation research project, with individual supervision from a research active expert. We offer great flexibility with over 40 modules to choose from, spanning the natural and social sciences from sustainable soil management and conservation biology to environmental law and globalisation. This enables you to construct a degree that fits your interests and career ambitions and to put your learning in a wider cultural context.

You will gain a solid foundation in the key theoretical issues around environment and development. You will apply this learning to real-world problems and gain the practical problem solving skills valued by employers. Hands-on experience in the laboratory is complemented by field work opportunities in the beautiful and topographically varied countryside around Lancaster and internationally. Lancaster’s MSc Biomedical Science by Research offers you an exciting opportunity to undertake and manage your own research project, allowing you to gain valuable laboratory experience and forge important relationships in the professional sphere.

Areas of research fall within (but are not limited to) the diverse biomedical portfolio of our academic staff - global health, cancer biology, diseases of the brain, infectious disease, drug discovery, biology of ageing and biomedical ethics.

Our 12-month programme provides you with the knowledge and technical skills to produce sustained and original work - work that will underpin progression in your chosen career. At the core of this is your independent research project, in which you will produce new and original data to make a solid contribution to the scientific community.

Our degree format includes nine months of full-time laboratory work as part of an established world-leading research team, directed learning via our graduate training programme, and a three-month writing up period.

The dissertation, and a viva voce assessment, will showcase your knowledge and understanding of your chosen research area whilst also demonstrating your ability to critically evaluate existing literature.

You will be supported by your supervisors at every stage: identifying gaps in your knowledge base (and working together to fill them), helping you to develop practical skills, increasing your data analysis skills, and guiding the writing up of your dissertation.

The MSc in Biomedicine at Lancaster offers an intensive, 12-month programme in a world-class environment with teaching and supervision by research-active staff. We aim to develop your intellectual, practical and transferable skills as you obtain a highly sought-after postgraduate qualification.

We are passionate advocates of academic curiosity and lifelong learning. The programme combines taught modules with a substantial dissertation research project, each making up half of the required points for assessment.
