The Doctor of Medicine (MD) provides a fresh approach to medical training. As the first Australian professional entry masters level program, the Melbourne MD creates a new benchmark in 21st century medical education.

The Doctor of Medicine is a four-year full-time course available to both Australian and international students. The course comprises a total of 400 credit points. Each year students lead an interdisciplinary conference, between Semester 1 and Semester 2, worth 6.25 credit points per year. The course commences at the start of each calendar year. The degree builds on prerequisite knowledge of anatomy, physiology and biochemistry acquired through undergraduate study. The Intensive Master of Clinical Embryology course (MCE) has gained global recognition as a training program for all assisted reproductive technologies (ART), producing high calibre embryologists, with the excellent knowledge and practical skills to eventually work in, and manage, human ART clinics. MCE is offered both on-campus (one year full time) and off-campus (restricted entry, full or part-time) to domestic and international students

Your studies will include the foundations of mammalian embryology, detailed assessment of all infertility treatment strategies, the theoretical basis behind embryo production, embryo selection and cryopreservation, focussing on all current and future technologies associated with ART. There are 3 units dedicated to Total Quality Management, Preimplantation Diagnosis and Ethics. Most importantly, we are equipped to teach all the practical skills required of andrologists and embryologists, beginning with sperm and embryo handling and assessment, and slowly building skills though learning in vitro fertilisation techniques, the latest cryopreservation techniques, such as vitrification of gametes and embryos finally finishing the year with ICSI and biopsy. Overview

This 12-month, intensive course provides students with the essential postgraduate knowledge and practical skills necessary to contribute competently to human infertility clinical services. Theoretical and practical skills are presented in the broad context of the regulations and the ethical considerations that apply to human IVF, both nationally and internationally, along with the quality control procedures required to ensure maximum success for IVF patients. The guidelines, protocols and regulations that steer and control human infertility services are also presented. In addition to attending lectures and self-directed study, students are required to undertake continual practical skills training and also students will undertake a minor research project. Students will not only be equipped with practical skills required for work in an IVF laboratory but also gain a greater understanding of research applications within the field of reproductive or developmental biology. Research-related tasks contribute to the overall assessment for specific coursework units.

The Master of Genomics and Health, the first such program in Australia, has been designed to prepare a workforce that is knowledgeable and skilled in practical, ethical and socially responsible implementation of genomics in health. Students will gain knowledge about genomics and engage in discourse around the current and potential impact on health and medicine brought about by advances in genomics and genomic technologies.

This course is designed to be available to students at different stages in their careers, including career starters and those with more established careers who wish to further their knowledge, skills and qualifications.

The Master of Genomics and Health requires completion of a total of 200 points of study and allows flexibility in subject choices to suit individual interests and study preferences. Students have the option of enrolling in a Master degree (200 points) or one of the nested awards - Graduate Diploma (100 points), Graduate Certificate (50 points).

Students undertaking the Masters program will be assisted with organising relevant internships and research projects. Successful completion of the research stream will provide adequate training for those who do not have Honours but may wish to undertake a PhD in future.

The program uses a blended learning approach with regular tutorials conducted in the Health Education and Learning Precinct of the Melbourne Children's Campus in Parkville. Students are encouraged to attend relevant seminars, journal clubs and meetings to complement their studies.

Public health genomics is the use of genomic information to benefit public health. The program will provide a grounding for people who are interested in combining genomics knowledge with skills in public health to work in areas of public policy for government or across a range of healthcare sectors. This would suit graduates from science, biomedical science or health sciences who would undertake electives from the Master of Public Health and/or science communication with internships in government, health policy think tanks, hospital settings or community advocacy groups.

  • Science

Variant curation is a process of examining genomic data results and using literature and databases to provide evidence about whether a patient’s genomic results have clinical significance. There is a need for variant curator scientists working in clinical services or in research. This would suit a graduate of applied science, science or biomedical science who would undertake electives in bioinformatics, the research stream with internships with clinical laboratories including pathology services, or clinical services with a focus on learning hands-on variant curation.

  • Clinical trials and research

Coordination, patient recruitment and informed consent are critical to the success of clinical trials and research in which patients or the public are involved. This would suit graduates from science, biomedical science or health sciences who would undertake the research stream, electives from the Master of Public Health and/or science communication with internships in research organisations, clinical trials centres, and the pharmaceutical industry.

  • Medical and Allied Health Settings

This program will provide those from a law background with a level of specialist genomics knowledge and will allow students to tailor their studies to focus on legal research, or undertake a range of relevant electives to support more applied career paths.

  •  Qualified medical and allied health professionals who wish to upskill in the area of genomics and medicine.
  • Recent undergraduates in science (BSci) and biomedicine (BBiomed) who do not want a career in laboratory-based areas and who want to broaden their interest in genomics for the healthcare sector
  • Anyone with a suitable health background who wishes to seek employment in areas such as clinical trials, education, community-based organisations such as genetic support groups, government etc. or use the qualification as an entry point into a graduate research degree.

NB Completion of this course does not fulfil the professional requirements for employment as a genetic counsellor. Students who exit with a Graduate Certificate or a Graduate Diploma in Genomics and Health and who wish to apply for the Master of Genetic Counselling will need to meet all eligibility criteria for that program. Their application will need to demonstrate relevant volunteer work/experience and they will be ranked with all other applicants for that year. The new degree is focused on the future needs of the physiotherapy profession - both locally and internationally - and was developed through extensive consultations with physiotherapists, students and leaders in the public and private health and research sectors.

Specialist clinical training is provided for general dentists who have at least two years’ full-time clinical experience after graduating. 

The Doctor of Clinical Dentistry (DCD) is classified under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) as a level 9 extended-Masters Degree. Prior to 2012 the Doctor of Clinical Dentistry was classified as a level 10 Doctorate award. The courtesy title of Doctor is conferred at graduation. 

The course is full-time for three years.

APPLICANTS

The course is for general dentists who wish to become specialists. The course is accredited by the Australian Dental Council (ADC) for specialist registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency. Local graduates of this course may apply for registration to practise in Australia in their designated specialty. International graduates of this course must pass the ADC examinations in addition to the DCD in order to register to practise as a specialist in Australia.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

On completion of the DCD course, you should be able to:

Audiology is a clinical science involving hearing and balance assessment and rehabilitation. Hearing assessment usually involves the use of a number of specialised tests which help to ascertain the site or type of problem within the auditory system. Audiologists working in this area often work closely with otologists (ear specialists). Aural rehabilitation involves helping people with impaired hearing to cope with their hearing difficulties. This work usually includes fitting hearing aids or other devices such as the cochlear implant (bionic ear), training in the use of these devices and helping people to use their vision and other compensatory mechanisms in order to communicate effectively. This profession should be of interest to those with a scientific background who are interested in working with people.

Course Overview

The first year of the course provides the basic scientific background for audiology and an introduction to clinical work. The second year provides comprehensive training in all aspects of clinical audiology along with an introduction to research methods in the field. The course consists of formal lectures, seminars, practical work and student presentations along with a substantial clinical component. Students will be scheduled for supervised clinical work at our clinical school and at various hearing care facilities across Victoria. The course runs from February to November and is made up of lectures, practical sessions and clinics. The Department of Audiology and Speech Pathology offers the Master of Clinical Audiology degree, which is a two year full time course. Since 1998, the Master of Clinical Audiology degree has been required for entry to the profession.

The aim of this course is to provide students with the necessary training to enter the profession of clinical audiology. The course provides comprehensive training in all aspects of clinical audiology along with an introduction to research methods in this field. Students who demonstrate an aptitude for research may be considered for PhD studies within the Department.

Skills:  Graduates of the Doctor of Optometry course will have:

  • skills to quantitatively describe light and its passage through optical systems (including ophthalmic instruments, ophthalmic lenses and the eye), design optical systems to meet required specifications, and quantitatively assess the nature and quality of optical images;
  • skills to construct appropriate differential diagnoses, and to acquire additional information to arrive at correct definitive diagnoses;
  • expert competency in clinical ocular examination using current best-practice methods, enabling them to fully assess and manage the health and visual performance of their patient;
  • interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal, that allow them to establish and maintain professional relationships with their patients, professional colleagues and the general community;
  • skills in the practice of optometry at a level that enables them to achieve and sustain registration with the appropriate professional bodies;
  • skills to take on a leadership role in the advancement of optometry on a global stage, both in clinical and research spheres.

Application of knowledge and skills:  Graduates of the Doctor of Optometry course will demonstrate the application of knowledge and skills:

  • by resolving new situations in clinical practice in an effective and innovative way;
  • by solving scientific problems in the visual and/or clinical sciences, as well as particular problems presented by patients;

Speech pathology is the clinical science concerned with the assessment, treatment and management of communication and swallowing disorders in infants, children and adults.

Speech pathologists work with people of all ages who are experiencing communication and/or swallowing disorders as a result of illness, injury or disability. Speech pathologists may work in a range of education and health sectors including playgroups, kindergartens, schools, universities, nursing homes, hospitals and community health centres. They may work in the public sector or build their own speech pathology practice in the private sector. Speech pathologists may work as a sole therapist or as part of a larger interdisciplinary team (physiotherapists, occupational therapists, doctors, audiologists and psychologists). They may work directly with the client and their family, providing individual guidance and goals, or they may devise and implement group therapy sessions.

This profession may be of interest to those with a scientific or linguistics background who are interested in working with people.

COURSE OVERVIEW

The Master of Speech Pathology course is designed to provide comprehensive training in all aspects of speech pathology and to produce graduates who are ready to enter the profession. The first year of the course provides the scientific background in anatomy and physiology, articulatory and acoustic phonetics, linguistics, speech and language disorders, clinical practice and processes. The second year builds on the specialised knowledge acquired in first year, develops clinical skills and introduces students to research methods in the field. The course consists of formal lectures, seminars, practical work and student presentations along with a substantial clinical component. Students will be scheduled for approximately 400 hours of supervised clinical work at various health-care and educational facilities in metropolitan and rural areas in Victoria. The clinical work will occur throughout the semesters alongside the lectures as well as block placements during the semester breaks. The Department of Audiology and Speech Pathology offers a Master of Speech Pathology degree, which is a two year full-time course. Completion of this degree qualifies you to work as a speech pathologist.

The Master of Speech Pathology degree allows students to gain both theoretical and clinical skills in the areas of communication and swallowing disorders, with a focus on these disorders across the lifespan. Students who show an aptitude for research may be considered for PhD studies in the department.

The course is the graduate level entry professional degree for speech pathologists with exposure to Australia’s best academic and clinical teaching across paediatric, adolescent and adult populations.
