Teaching and learning

The programme is delivered through a combination of weekly lectures, seminar presentations, group exercises and workshops. The BUDD studio includes a fieldwork project in an urban reality of the Global South, developed in partnership with local organisations, networks of communities, slum dweller federations, universities and governments alike. Students are encouraged to explore different tools, concepts and ideas throughout the programme and test these during the field project. Assessment is through coursework, design work, written examinations and the 10,000-word report.

The programme enables graduates to work in NGOs and local government – facilitating community organisations and households to improve their living conditions. Graduate destinations range from UK-based organisations in the public, private and community sectors, to governmental, inter-governmental and non-governmental organisations, which operate in a development capacity in the South. Recent graduates have also been employed by international NGOs and aid and development agencies and architectural and design practices. Dissertation/report

In order to develop your research skills and critical thinking you will undertake an independent research project which culminates in a dissertation of 10,000 words.

Teaching and learning

The programme is delivered through individual and group project work, lectures, tutorials, seminars and workshops. You will participate for free in a field trip to mainland Europe and several site visits in the UK. You will be assessed through essays, individual and group projects, presentations, reports, an unseen written examination and the dissertation.

We make every effort to bundle teaching for the core modules on two days per week so that students studying on a flexible basis can attend lectures one day per week. However, due to timetabling and venue availability restrictions no guarantee can be given that we will be able to offer this every year. There is also no guarantee that the electives you may wish to choose will be offered on the same day as the rest of your classes. Your coursework may require you to dedicate more than one slot per week to fieldwork or study.

Fieldwork

A field trip will take place in the Reading Week of term two.

There are no additional costs involved in the field trip.

The programme combines aspects of cultural heritage - historic buildings, museums, collections, sites and landscapes - with the best preventive conservation and heritage management policies, projects, methodologies and practices.

About this degree

Fieldwork

The overseas fieldwork trip is a practical research-based residential that helps draw the various elements of the degree together.

The programme has been conceived to provide enhanced capacity-building opportunities for those currently working in the field of infrastructure development and offers an invaluable qualification for new entrants into the field. Why study this degree at UCL?

Originally based on the work of the OMEGA Centre, the programme still draws on the numerous studies undertaken in this field by the centre and other leading research institutions. 

The programme is interdisciplinary and international, drawing from experiences both in the developed and developing world. It seeks to provide students with insights, knowledge and skills that will assist them in planning, appraising and delivering future infrastructure developments in a manner that is sensitive to the risks, uncertainties and complexities of different contexts.

Accreditation

Completion of the MSc programme leads to eligibility for professional membership of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. The MSc programme is also accredited by the Royal Town Planning Institute as a 'specialist' fourth year for graduate students who have successfully completed an RTPI-accredited three-year undergraduate programme, and by the Joint Board of Moderators as a Further Learning programme for holders of a Chartered Engineer (CEng) accredited first degree.

This MSc is Europe's long-standing specialist graduate lighting programme. It provides a holistic approach to lighting design considering the human response to light and lighting, the science and technology of the subject, together with the design of lighting, as an integrated component of architecture and the built environment.

About this degree

Students develop an understanding of a wide range of topics associated with the design of the lit environment including lamp and luminaire technologies, the impact of light on architectural form and the human reaction to light. The programme provides a holistic approach to light and lighting so that graduates have both the vision to design beautiful lit environments and the skills necessary to ensure that they are successfully engineered.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of four core modules (75 credits), one optional module (15 credits), and a light and lighting dissertation (90 credits).

Teaching and learning

The programme has formal elements of lectures and tutorials that are complemented with project work and site visits to study lighting. There are also other visits to laboratories and other facilities associated with the subject. Assessment is through coursework (essays and design projects), written examination and a 15,000-word dissertation.

Fieldwork

Site visits are part of coursework, classroom activities and dissertations.

Students are expected to pay for local travel near the university. Travel for events outside London is provided if it forms part of the taught degree.

The majority of graduates have either continued to work, or have gained employment in the lighting profession either in the lighting manufacturing industry or in lighting design. A number of students have used the MSc as a foundation for MPhil/PhD research.

Graduate students from The Bartlett School of Planning have been very successful in gaining subsequent employment. At present there is a growing demand for our Master's graduates from a wide range of both public and private employers around the world. While a main source of employment remains in local government and central government planning and in planning-related consultancy (Arup, Aecom, BioRegional, WWF, Future of London, etc), graduates are also employed in the housing and transport sectors; planning, urban regeneration and environmental agencies; public and private utility companies; urban design consultancy (various planning, engineering and architecture firms); and teaching and research.

Employability

This programme is ideal for those who have no relevant work experience and want to forge a planning career right through to those who have extensive relevant work experience but want to consolidate their skills and knowledge. Teaching and learning

The programme is delivered through a combination of case-based learning, interviews, peer-based learning and lectures and workshops from leading practitioners, policymakers, entrepreneurs and academics. Students are required to have sufficient breadth and depth of knowledge to challenge and inform others. Assessment is primarily through written coursework and the research report.

Student work of the highest calibre is published in the SMPJournal - a collection of student thoughts and ideas developed throughout their studies on the MSc in Strategic Management of Projects. The SMPJournal is an ISSN publication and is listed in the relevant libraries Cambridge and Oxford Universities and the British Library. This will increase your credibility as a professional in the strategic management of projects. 

Fieldwork

You will be required to lead discussions with academics, fellow classmates, alumni and guest speakers and be able to explore the areas that are of interest to your career and professional development plans specifically.
