This allows you to prepare for each module and apply yourself to the activities to consolidate your learning.

Some of your learning will be through using BIM software in computer labs, applying it to real-world scenarios and briefs.

Assessment

Assessment mainly avoids major exams, and many modules have mini projects that require applied research relevant to the syllabus but applied to construction project management in practice.

Careers / Further study

Clients, consultants and contractors value project managers' role highly when it comes to optimising projects' budgets, timescales and quality. Project management roles vary, depending on the nature of the project and working environment, but it is a generic function that many organisations' clients will specify.

Course detail

The course's teaching staff includes Chartered Building Surveyors with many years' experience, and we have input from part-time visiting practitioners and speakers. The course also draws upon the research and consultancy carried out in the department.

You will have access to a coherent programme of study in building surveying, underpinned by staff research and consultancy that reflects and answers the needs of professional practice. You will be able to become an effective member of a building surveying team within a relatively short period.

Transport touches everyone's lives. Transport planning is all about finding out how to reconcile today's needs for movement and development with protection and improvement of natural and urban environments. This course provides the necessary academic background to begin or enhance your career in transport planning.

Bristol is the home of Isambard Kingdom Brunel, and an exciting place to study transport. The city has some interesting and complex transport problems, and plans to tackle them include a bus rapid transit network, continuing developments to cycling networks as the country's first Cycling City, and experimental closures of the city centre to motor traffic. We have close links with local authorities in the area, and have been commissioned to evaluate Bristol's Local Sustainable Transport Fund project.

Why do most Park and Ride schemes cause an increase in overall traffic? Why do people living in high-density housing make fewer journeys than people in suburbs, yet cause more traffic congestion? If you choose to, we will help you to find a suitable placement with an employer based in the area, for a few weeks in the summer after the end of teaching and assessment. The placement (which may or may not be unpaid) will involve a project designed to address an employer's genuine need. Your experience and findings will contribute to your project-based dissertation.

MSc Urban Planning is suited to a range of entrants - graduates from related disciplines, such as geography, professionals from planning practice and those from non-related backgrounds who are passionate about the subject. It is accredited by the Royal Town Planning Institute and prepares you for work as a planner in a wide range of roles, including in local or central government, private practice and the third sector. We also prepare you for potential work outside the UK, with an international context to the knowledge and skills you develop.

Course detail

The course comprises advanced postgraduate study in urban planning and is firmly underpinned by a wide range of research, some of which is carried out by the course's excellent teaching staff and by faculty scholarships, consultancy and links with practice. Indeed, learning is strongly linked to practice, helping you become an effective, professionally qualified planner.

It also offers a range of study patterns to allow easier access to the course. Available over one or two years, it includes 'time out' options to help you manage your personal and professional commitments around your studies.

You can also specialise. We provide core planning knowledge and skills, with a range of specialised areas of planning available as you progress.

Structure

The full Master's course comprises 180 credits divided into three 60 credits stages: Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma, and Master's. Students work incrementally through the three stages and must pass all modules at each stage in order to progress to the next.

Modules

There are three core modules to the taught element of the course:
• Plan Making (30 credits)
• Implementation and Design Quality (30 credits)
• History and Theory of Urban Planning (30 credits)
• Dissertation (60 credits)

You also choose two 15 credit modules from the following, based on your intended specialism:
• Planning for Conservation
• Healthy Cities
• Grassroots Planning
• Urban Design
• Transport Policy and Finance
• Changing Travel Behaviour

Format

We use a variety of teaching methods, including lectures, seminars, workshops, discussions, teamwork, presentations and external visits.

Assessment

All assessment is by coursework for each module, on a credit basis. This means patterns of study can be flexible. The modules are assessed through a mixture of group and individual presentations, essays, reports, portfolio work and presentation boards.
We also have guest lectures from professional practitioners, which give you valuable insights into the latest developments in practice.

Careers / Further study

This RTPI-accredited qualification offers postgraduates the opportunity to gain the knowledge and skills for a range of fascinating careers, in a field where there is currently a shortage of qualified professionals. Bristol hosts a range of employers, particularly in the consultancy sector.

A dual pathway conversion course that gives STEM students the opportunity to gain the knowledge and skills needed for a career in building services engineering.

Building services engineers are responsible for the mechanical and electrical systems that contribute to people's comfort, health and productivity. They provide analytic and design skills to buildings of all scales and levels of complexity, from residential and commercial, to industrial and cultural.

With greater efficiency constantly being sought in the use of energy and materials (for environmental and economic reasons) there is a growing demand for a new generation of environmentally responsible buildings. Currently however, the field of architecture and engineering is facing a deficit of people with the right type of expertise. In response, this full time Masters course has been created to provide a route through which STEM graduates (or people with relevant experience) can align their skills with the needs of the profession.

Course detail

The MSc Building Services Engineering is suitable for graduates with degrees in technological subjects (such as mechanical, aeronautical, civil and automotive engineering), or maths or science graduates. Graduates of the pure sciences will be recommended to enter the MSc course through the pathway offering some preparatory grounding in relevant technical subjects.

In developing the skills to practice as a building services professional, you will learn about the relevant technologies and methods of the discipline, and will be introduced to themes related to management and professional conduct within an engineering context.

Modules

Over the course of one year, you will study the following compulsory modules:

• Mechanical Services
• Construction Procurement
• Low Carbon Building Services
• Building Services Design Project
• Building Engineering Research
• Dissertation

Format

Input from industry practitioners as well as other interdisciplinary professionals is a key part of the course. Along with field trips to working sites, this will help you develop an understanding of how to apply the concepts and principles to real world situations and projects.

Through project work, group work, hands-on practice and theory, you will gain the skills needed to make a positive impact on the places where people live, study and work.

Much of the teaching will focus around a studio-based engineering design project under the guidance and critique of your tutor. There will also be traditional teacher-led classroom delivery supported by online materials.

Assessment

We use a range of assessment tools throughout the course, including exams, coursework, presentations, lab reports and portfolio development.

Careers / Further study

A career in building services engineering is likely to be varied, analytical and inventive. This Masters will equip you with the knowledge and experience needed to step into a wide range of roles, including Building Services Consulting Engineer, Mechanical Building Services Design Engineer, Sustainability Engineer and MEP Construction Engineer.
