Developed in conjunction with the industrial partners of the Stratified Medicine Scotland Innovation Centre (SMS-IC) one of five innovation centres in Scotland some of which cross over in terms of innovation and technologies.Stratified Medicine holds huge potential to enhance timely development of new treatments for human disease. It is among the most important concepts to emerge in 21st century clinical science and will be a crucial component of the global drive to increase the efficacy, safety and cost effectiveness of new medicines.

If you are a person with ideas and a constant stream of research backing up your ideas and you have potential to be a company start up in this area the programme is directly aimed at getting your ideas off the ground and towards becoming a fully functioning enterprise in your own right in Scotland. You learn all there is to know about process innovation in order to progress your idea and samples through to small scale production testing whilst learning anything you didn't know about genome enabled medicines, biologic drug discovery, Pharmacokinetics and more. Physicians Associates support doctors to diagnose and manage patients mostly in hospital settings but you may also work in busy GP practises. Currently PAs work in England and Scotland in a wide range of speciality areas. Physician Associates were brought into the medical profession to meet the demands of the NHS. They were introduced in 2015 to tackle workload pressures of GPs. The Faculty of Physicians Associates is currently working to gain statutory registration for PAs. The Secretary of State has mandated that there should be 1000 PAs working in Primary Care by 2020.

At Aberdeen you will be trained to provide a thorough range of PA duties and you will often diagnose, take medical histories, perform examinations, analyse test results and develop management plans. You will have the chance to choose general surgery, emergency medicine, reproductive health and paediatrics as a specialism. The university has a long established history in teaching medicine. It is ranked 7th in the UK for medicine (Guardian University Guide 2016).

The role of Physicians Associate is a relatively new area and it is designed to supplement the diagnostic needs within busy medical settings which involve specialist hospital doctors so that they could concentrate more on specialist consultancy and other areas of work. The programme draws on strengths within the university and medical area within disease discovery. Insulin was first developed at University of Aberdeen and the discovery of drug process, treatment and design has been developed and researched ever since. Aberdeen is also known for its research in food and nutrition and other areas. This programme is ideal for newly qualified graduates in medical science disciplines such as biomedical sciences, biochemistry, pharmacology, pharmacy, medicine and similar degrees.

Clinical pharmacology forms a critical part of the drug development process and our graduates are employed in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. These industries are now in rapid growth due to a combination of innovations and strength within customised and other types of medicine and treatment industry areas. Further innovations which link into this industry come from the Internet of Things and more ability to treat and diagnose at source.

There is always a strong need for the discipline to provide a foundation to any new innovations which often come from multidisciplinary teams. Did you know researchers at Aberdeen invented the first MRI scanner (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) for instance? Since this time much has been done to further work on the MRI scanner and deliver some of the most advanced forms of body visualisation tools available to the health area. If you have ever wondered how X rays work or you are interested in the latest radiotherapy techniques to provide therapeutic tools from radiographic equipment and advances this programme not only gives you the theory and practice in applying imaging in a health setting, it also gives you opportunities to think about the technologies involved and the applications. There is a lot of Physics and Maths required behind the different technologies involved in medical imaging so if you have these subjects and a life science background plus engineering or similar science disciplines this will make the programme more accessible.

Immunology is linked to our ability to remain healthy and free of disease - fighting off infections and disease and understanding our genetic factors and risk factors in inheriting disease. You look at behavioural factors and their links to disease to understand protection methods and you go into the detail of bioinformatics and genomics to understand DNA and analyse within practical research when you test for specific issues such as stress, hunger and so on and responses in the body.

The programme is designed for you to develop your academic knowledge of immunology and its relevance to disease with analysis and research skills designed to enhance your career prospects, or continue to PhD. You can use your training within educational establishments to apply training, work in patents, science outreach and public engagement.

Focusing on the relevance of the immune response in the maintenance of health and development of disease, graduates will be able to attain the intellectual and practical skills needed to address both theoretical and technical aspects of modern biomedical research.

In common with the other molecular biosciences Masters courses, the MSc in Immunology builds on recent advances in genomics to understand the generation of immunological diversity at a cellular level, how this imparts variability in immune responses at the individual and population level and the relevance of the immune system in disease areas such as autoimmunity, cancer, allergy and microbial infections.

The Rowett Institute informs policy and continues to join the dots between diet and health. If you are interested in health and dietary factors this programme will provide much theory and research towards answers and questions you want to ask. You look at dietary assessments, macronutrients, energy balance, metabolism, micronutrients, nutrition and body influence, body composition and nutrition throughout life. You also apply statistics to uncover answers to questions.

Understanding the link between diet and health can be the differentiator between good health and issues affecting public health. This major area of interest has grown considerably over the past few years with increasing awareness of disease and its prevention and the growth in population using health services and the service ability to cope in the future. There has also been a steady increase in the amount of professionals providing consultancy and support to people who have realised the link and want to take action to become healthier with books, films and many other supporting communications in what has almost become an industry in itself.

The Rowett Institute in Aberdeen is known UK wide and internationally as a major research contributor to many discoveries within food and nutrition, informing policy, debating health and food security and many other issues relating to the food we eat and its effects on our bodies.

The aim of this innovative programme is to provide training in human nutrition for graduates in biological or other sciences. If you are interested in how drugs metabolise, small molecule discovery and biologics this programme will provide an advanced level of study and challenge to ensure you have sound skills to innovate within the drug development industry. This industry area is rapidly expanding due to new discoveries across biotechnology, biologics, Internet of Things, customised drug treatments and diagnostics at source. This has lead to many new companies being formed, customised and small batch medicines apart from large batch pharmaceutical research and production.

University of Aberdeen is world renowned in this area with the invention of Insulin to treat diabetes which won a Nobel Prize and strengths in medical research areas which also include food and nutrition and disease treatment. You learn about bio-business and the university has strong links with GSK, Pfizer, and AstraZeneca plus Novabiotics and others.

In our MSc in Drug Discovery and Development we train students in major areas of biochemical and molecular pharmacology and therapeutics relevant to the drug discovery and development business. This includes training in molecular pharmacology, drug metabolism and toxicology, therapeutics, pharmacokinetics, pharmcovigilance, regulatory affairs and clinical pharmacology.

There is a firm emphasis on the development of clinical reasoning and practical skills throughout the course.

Academic modules have been developed to allow students to develop strong core assessment and treatments skills and a deeper knowledge of core areas such as exercise prescription and health improvement theory. Integrating the core practice areas of cardiovascular respiratory, neurology and musculoskeletal encourages students to think holistically about their patients to embed this in their practice.

Placements and accreditation

On completion of the course, you will be eligible to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council and membership of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy.

Careers

Students who complete their MSc (Pre-registration) Physiotherapy degree at RGU and wish to pursue working within the United States are welcome to apply to upgrade their MSc to a Doctorate of Physiotherapy (DPT).
