Exercise scientists

Exercise scientists are more concerned with improving a person's health and helping them recover from illness through a structured programme of physical activity and other health-based interventions. Exercise scientists might be employed by local authorities to run community based health and exercise initiatives.

This course provides consultants, operators, regulators and managers with the professional skills and training to contribute to the provision of environmentally sound and economically sustainable systems in the fields of clean water supply, wastewater treatment, and the management of solid waste, including wastes from the oil industry.

It is intended for those who find themselves in management positions with little experience of the techniques necessary to manage the range of projects for which they have responsibilities, or people with a background in management who feel they lack up-to-date technical knowledge in the rapidly changing field of environmental engineering.

You’ll build your knowledge of key issues such as water resource, solid waste or health management. Taught by experts in a research-intensive environment, you’ll gain an insight into the latest developments in this exciting field and prepare to meet the challenges they bring.

A series of core modules that run throughout the year will develop your knowledge of a wide range of topics.

You’ll explore the diversion of organic wastes from landfill and how energy is recovered from them, as well as water supply systems, the challenges of water resource management and the different landfill, mechanical-biological and thermal treatment options available for solid waste.

You’ll also consider wastewater treatment, solid waste management and issues such as controlling emissions. The ways in which legislation is used to protect the environment and the role of public health engineers are also among the topics you’ll cover.

Over the summer months you’ll also research a topic of your choice in environmental engineering and project management – this independent research project will demonstrate your skills, and could even lay the groundwork for your future career specialism.

You’ll have chance to challenge the myths associated with food allergies and the risks, causes and solutions. You’ll learn the science behind every ingredient that goes into a product.

The core sciences of chemistry and biochemistry underpin the course, alongside the processing of food. You’ll also study some elements of microbiology and nutrition. You’ll learn to apply fundamental scientific concepts to understand and manipulate the complex characteristics of foods and to integrate this scientific knowledge with an understanding of food technology.

Assessment

Assessment is by a range of methods, including formal examination, in-class tests, laboratory practical reports, example sheets, problem solving, project work and verbal presentations.

The pass mark for each module is 50%. All marks from all modules (passed and failed) are included in the final classification mark, which must be at least a 50% average to pass.

This flexible degree programme allows you to blend theoretical and applied statistical disciplines, ideal for training in medical statistics. The MSc Nursing with Registration (Adult) is for graduates from every academic discipline, from Accounting to Zoology, who want to become a qualified adult nurse and gain a master-level qualification.

This is a stimulating and challenging programme, integrating theory and practice in the discipline of nursing. Clinical nursing practice is at the centre of the programme and takes place in a variety of settings in the Leeds area. It includes regional healthcare specialities, such as renal, liver, neurology and cardiac.

You’ll study at the University campus and through our Virtual Learning Environment. You’ll experience a variety of different field-specific clinical placements, including acute and long-term settings, and will care for people in hospital and in the community.

Course content

The first year of the course is designed to introduce you to theoretical knowledge, skills and attitudes required for clinical practice. You spend time in clinical practice in this year, where you'll develop a number of nursing skills and apply your theoretical knowledge.

Over the next two years of the programme you'll further develop your knowledge and skills, but more specifically in relation to adult nursing. Clinical experience

You’ll have access to a wide range of different clinical specialisms, including hospital and community placements. You’ll also develop research skills and carry out a dissertation project related to nursing practice.

At the end of the programme, we’ll support you in meeting the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) requirements for entry to the professional register.

When and where do I study?

Intake for the programme is in September of each academic year.

Study is at the University of Leeds and through use of the institution’s Virtual Learning environment (VLE) Blackboard® and you will experience a wide variety of different, field specific clinical placements. They will include acute and long-term settings as well as caring for people in hospital and community. You will be required to attend the University one or two days per week and will be in clinical placement for the remainder of the week.

Clinical experience during the programme will include some weekend and night duty shifts in order to meet the Nursing and Midwifery Council recommendations.

Time is also given in the programme for independent/private study and assessment preparation.

There is a work-based learning focus with assessment methods linked to your practice and your work.

If you are a therapeutic radiographer, dosimetrist or other healthcare professional working in radiotherapy and oncology, this course can help you develop your knowledge of radiotherapy planning. It’s a highly focused course that gives you a thorough understanding of the key practices surrounding simulating and evaluating radiation doses for radiotherapy.

You gain an in-depth understanding of current and future radiotherapy planning issues and, crucially, develop the ability to apply critical thinking skills to practice. You gain general critical thinking and literature skills as well as more specific planning theory and plan evaluation skills.

Your studies cover core modules involving fundamental planning theories, plan evaluation, advanced planning and image guided radiotherapy. We also introduce you to research skills, which you use to produce a final dissertation.

The course is delivered using our virtual learning environment, known as Blackboard. You don't need to attend the university and you can study via the web in your own time, which means you can fit the course around your clinical work. The web-based learning materials are designed to help improve your radiotherapy knowledge, as well as share experiences with other students through our e-based discussion forum. If you are not confident with computers, help and support is available.

For some modules there is a requirement to produce a plan for the course and you must have access to a clinical radiotherapy planning environment. This helps support the demands of your postgraduate work.

You may be eligible to apply for accreditation of work-based projects and prior certificated learning, which will count towards your final award.

The postgraduate certificate (PgCert) is achieved by successfully completing 60 credits.

River basins are of fundamental importance to the world’s population. Research training in water dynamics and management are demanded by both industry and academia. The University has a world-class reputation for water-related research and GIS development in an environmental context. This programme builds on that success.

Core components are river basin hydrology and basic environmental GIS. Students choosing a River Basins (RB) pathway gain advanced knowledge and skills in channel hydraulics and sediment transport, river ecology and environmental assessment. Students on a Geographical Information Systems (GIS) pathway gain advanced knowledge and skills in GIS for environment, GIS programming and digital image analysis and remote sensing.

This highly practical course advocates learning by doing and is assessed 100% by coursework. We host guest lecturers from business, industry and academia, visit work places and conduct a series of field-, laboratory- and PC-based practicals. You also have the chance to take a work placement module.

More information

The programme offers a detailed understanding of the principles of water resource management and an appreciation of the institutional and legal frameworks impacting on river basin management. You learn to formulate important research questions and design methodological approaches to answer them; and to develop quantitative analyses skills.

This programme is available part time, allowing you to combine study with other commitments. You can work to fund your studies, or gain a new qualification without giving up an existing job. We aim to be flexible in helping you to put together a part-time course structure that meets your academic goals while recognising the constraints on your study time.

Our River Basin Dynamics and Management with GIS programme is accredited by Chartered Institute of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM).

Course content

This programme delivers advanced pure and applied education and training in key modern and developing fields of catchment dynamics and management and GIS. This is achieved across the modules of study by developing research methods (15% time), communication and interpersonal skills (10%), independent working (10%), instruction in advanced techniques (10%), specialist disciplinary knowledge (15%), quantitative skills training (15%), field skills training (10%) and vocational/employability/research career awareness and training (15%). As such the programme emphasis is on practical work, is assessed by 100% coursework (no exams) and permits considerable interaction of students with industry and business.

If you study this programme part-time you will study fewer modules in each year.
