How do we know what we know about a disease and it’s treatment? Our most reliable knowledge derives from appropriate, timely, high-quality research. 

This programme will equip you with the skills needed to understand the critical elements in planning, undertaking, and analysing research in health care. These are vital skills for anyone wanting to develop or enhance their career in health care and health-related research. 

Our modules can be accessed in a variety of ways including as standalone modules (10 or 20 credits each) or through the 60 credit PG Certificate; 120 credit PG Diploma or the 180 credit Masters

If you wish to study this programme to Postgraduate Diploma level then you will need to complete the taught elements of the programme but will not need to complete a dissertation, which is only available to those studying for the Masters.

Course details

This modular multidisciplinary programme offers a Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma or a Masters in Health Research Methods and is particularly suitable for:

  • clinical and allied health professionals (including doctors, nurses, midwives, dietitians, physiotherapists)
  • laboratory-based scientists wishing to further understand or transition to population-based research
  • graduates looking to launch their career in health research
  • intercalating medical students who have completed at least three years of full-time study
  • those in the commercial health care sector (including the pharmaceutical or devices industries), public sector organisations (including local government), NGOs, voluntary sector and charities
  • foundation skills for postgraduate research programmes (including PhD)

The aims of the course are to provide a world class programme that meets the needs of those wanting or needing:

  • a detailed understanding of the range of methodologies and analyses utilised in applied health research
  • the necessary skills to critically interpret the findings of health research resulting from different methodologies.

Learning and teaching

As a Birmingham student, you will be joining the academic elite and will have the privilege of learning from world-leading experts, as well as your peers. From the outset you will be encouraged to become an independent and self-motivated learner. We want you to be challenged and will encourage you to think for yourself.

Teaching takes place in one-week blocks, and you will participate in a range of teaching styles such as lectures, small group tutorials, presentations, peer group learning, self-study etc.

You will have access to a comprehensive support system that will assist and encourage you, including personal tutors and welfare tutors who can help with both academic and welfare issues.

Given the complex and evolving nature of multi-professional health care, skilled practitioners must be able to lead service transformation through advanced clinical assessment and decision making at the interface between primary and secondary care. Based on international research, developed with clinical experts and delivered within world-class learning facilities, this programme has been designed with high quality, research informed person-centred care at its heart.

Learning and Teaching

As a Birmingham student, you will have the privilege of learning from world-leading experts, as well as your clinical peers. From the outset you will be encouraged to become an independent and self-motivated learner. We want you to be challenged and will encourage you to think for yourself within your professional role, essential for advancing your clinical practice.

The modules within the programme are delivered differently. Some are available online, others have a blended learning approach. Others are in blocks of teaching which usually take place from Monday to Friday 9am-5.30pm. You will participate in a range of teaching styles such as lectures, eLectures, small group tutorials, presentations, peer group learning, self-study etc.

Lectures are delivered by subject specialists, NHS clinicians, service users and carers. Many of the lectures are from visiting experts who practice and/or research in their specific field. The course is academic in nature and you are expected to use the basic content as a springboard for further self-study. All programme presentations and materials are available on Canvas (the University’s on-line learning platform) for follow up after lectures.

You will have access to a comprehensive support system that will assist and encourage you, including personal tutors and welfare tutors who can help with both academic and welfare issues.

Employability

This programme is aimed at multi-professionals from a variety of clinical settings who want to develop their research and leadership skills and clinical expertise at Masters level.
