Experimental Pathology refers to research in any area of biomedical investigation that is relevant to human disease. Graduates of the Master of Physical Therapy (MPT) program promote 'Movement and Function for Life'. The first graduates, in 1964, received a "certificate course in Physical Medicine Therapy". Following multiple shifts through the years, the first class of the MPT program graduated in 2006. In 2007, the School of Rehabilitation Sciences at UBC was dissolved and The Division of Physical Therapy became the Department of Physical Therapy in the Faculty of Medicine.
Using the Lifespan approach, the major areas of study in the 26 month MPT program include: basic sciences, clinical decision making, clinical practice (musculoskeletal, neurological and cardiorespiratory), exercise and movement sciences, and rehabilitation research. Additionally, students experience a total of 1080 'hands-on' clinical hours over six clinical placements in diverse aspects of clinical care. The evidence-based curriculum is structured to promote critical thinking, develop problem solving skills, promote teamwork and collaboration, and empower students to be lifelong learners.
In a partnership between UBC and University of Northern British Columbia, and with provincial funding in place, a Northern and Rural Cohort within the MPT program was created in 2011/2012. This allows for expansion of the clinical education component of the MPT program to fulfill UBC’s role as BC's provincial Physical Therapy educational program, and to contribute to increasing clinical capacity in northern and rural areas of BC.
The Department of Physical Therapy provides an outstanding learning environment and leads in innovative research to advance physical therapy practice globally. The Department is well known for its high standards and excellent faculty. Both academic and external faculty are recipients of prestigious teaching awards, providing an excellent learning environment.
The MPT Program has been accredited by Physiotherapy Education Accreditation Canada, and has a strong relationship with the clinical community. The Physiotherapy Association of British Columbia and the College of Physical Therapists of British Columbia are involved in the planning and operations of the MPT program. Both organizations participate by teaching content related to regulation, professionalism, licensing and other topics that reflect the College and the professional association mandates. In addition, they support student involvement on their respective Boards and committees.
In 2009, the Fraser Health Authority and the Department of Physical Therapy established an agreement to enable the opening of the first student-run physiotherapy outpatient clinic in B.C. at Royal Columbian Hospital. This provides an exceptional opportunity for Physical Therapy students to advance their skills in an interdisciplinary setting while providing rehabilitation services to the community. Since 2009 other clinics have opened in a range of health care settings.
The MPT program is located in a state-of-the-art facility in beautiful Vancouver. Cameras and large screen monitors in labs allow for all students to have the best seat in the house when observing demonstrations of even the most detailed subjects. Additionally, students have access to a modern rehabilitation gymnasium which features state of the art exercise equipment with performance measurement capabilities.
The Master of Physical Therapy program in the Department of Physical Therapy graduates excellent practitioners and scientists. The combination of a solid evidence-based education, clinical placements, and interaction with outstanding faculty and clinical faculty ensures that graduates consistently score above average on national licensure exams, and become knowledgeable and effective practitioners and/or scientists in the private and public sectors.
For almost 50 years, the School's M.Sc. program has provided students with an education that is grounded in the basic and applied sciences, can address complex communication problems within an interdisciplinary framework, and understand the relevance of theory in research as well as in clinical practice. The MSc program offers graduates an entry-level degree to practice as an Audiologist or a Speech-Language Pathologist. Studying in state-of-the-art teaching and research labs with outstanding faculty prepares students to be confident practitioners who are effective, in-demand, and equipped with the skills to pursue new knowledge and keep pace with the constant changes in science, practice and technology. The clinical education program strives to provide each student with experience in all aspects of the major professional area (audiology or speech-language pathology) as well as a foundation of clinical experience in the other area.

Speech-language pathology is the health profession that is grounded in the study of developmental and acquired communication and swallowing disorders. It includes the assessment and management of such disorders. Speech-language pathologists work with people of all ages whose disorders may include delayed speech and language development, neurologically-based speech and language impairment, stuttering, voice and/or swallowing disorders. Speech-language pathologists often work as part of a team, working alongside teachers, physicians, audiologists, psychologists, social workers, rehabilitation counselors and others.
The School of Audiology and Speech Sciences (SASS) in the Faculty of Medicine at UBC is the only accredited M.Sc. program in British Columbia that educates speech-language pathologists and audiologists.
SASS offers clinical externships, ensuring that you experience clinical settings that reflect the diverse realities of practice. Externships are taught by experienced clinicians who understand the needs of student-clinicians, clients and their families.
SASS faculty are internationally renowned for their research. In addition to mentoring and training M.Sc. and Ph.D. students, faculty members are regularly sought after to provide specific expertise. The objectives of the Program are to educate graduate students as neuroscientists with intensive experience in at least one area of research, and to ensure that students in the Program develop a broadly based knowledge of the neurosciences. The Program aims for flexibility so that the individual needs and background of each student can, as quickly as possible, be accommodated. The core program of courses offered to entering students consists of Neuroanatomy, Neurophysiology, Neurochemistry, Psychobiology, Molecular Neurobiology, and Neuropharmacology. Additional related courses are available for selection by the student and his/her Supervisory Committee. The Program is research oriented: students are expected to engage in research from the start of their studies. Research is undertaken in individual departments, over a wide range of basic and clinical Neuroscience topics.
The Graduate Program in Neuroscience is a multidisciplinary program of the Faculty of Graduate Studies. It is administered by the Chairman of the Neuroscience Advisory Committee, and comprises some 60 faculty members representing 13 departments from the Faculties of Medicine, Science and Arts at the University of British Columbia. Laboratory and teaching areas are located across the UBC campus and at the University Hospital and the Vancouver Hospital, according to the teaching and research affiliations of the Neuroscience faculty members.
Offered by the Occupational and Environmental Health Division in the School of Population and Public Health (SPPH), this Master of Science program leads to professional or research careers that make a difference to community and work environments and to people's health.
The "occupational and environmental hygiene" field refers to recognition, evaluation and control of chemical, physical and biological hazards in workplaces and the community. The MSc OEH program teaches the sciences of exposure measurement, exposure control, and assessment of health effects of occupational and environmental exposures.
Students come to the program from diverse undergraduate backgrounds, including biology, chemistry, engineering, geography, kinesiology, laboratory science, microbiology, nursing, medicine, physics, psychology, and resource management. This diversity provides a stimulating and creative learning environment as each student brings their specialized knowledge to bear on problem solving.
Graduates of this program often become certified professionals after writing the exams offered by either the Canadian Registration Board of Occupational Hygienists or the American Board of Industrial Hygiene.
The graduate program in Human Nutrition offers opportunities for advanced study and original investigations in basic and applied human nutrition. The curriculum includes coursework and thesis research through laboratory or field work in a variety of areas relevant to human nutrition including nutrient metabolism, diet and disease, nutrition through the life cycle and nutrition behaviours.
The program is enriched through collaboration with colleagues in other graduate programs including Animal Science, Food Science, Pediatrics, Anatomy & Cell Biology and Pharmaceutical Sciences.
Graduates of our program have pursued academic positions at universities or colleges, consulting, or careers in health-related fields including medicine, dentistry, and others. A master's in pharmaceutical sciences is a launching pad to success in countless fields. The Master of Occupational Therapy (MOT) program is a twenty four month professional master's degree program, and the only occupational therapy degree program in British Columbia. It is a professional degree program with no thesis requirement and the curriculum is based on a combination of coursework and fieldwork placement. Our program is fully accredited by the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists and graduates are eligible to write the national licensing exam upon graduation.
Occupational Therapy is a health-care profession dedicated to assisting individuals (and their families) to participate in and engage in the occupation of daily living. Occupational therapists provide specialized rehabilitation services to maintain, restore, or improve the ability of children and adults to perform the occupations of daily life, which may be impaired as a result of illness, injury, congenital or acquired disabilities, or social disadvantage.
Over the course of 2 years, there are 5 fieldwork placements of 5-7 weeks each.
This program is one of the smallest MOT programs in Canada; our students enjoy small class sizes and more individual attention. With a modular based structure, we engage over 50 clinicians a year to teach our students the skills and theory required for practice, supplementing our core program. Our teaching team believes not only in creating an environment that is open and exciting, but also recognizes that they are educating and working with their colleagues of tomorrow. We are currently the only Occupational Therapy program in Canada to offer designated seats for international students.
The MOT program prepares graduates to be self-directed, lifelong learners, who consciously use theory, evidence and critical thinking skills to maintain, evaluate and improve their practice of occupational therapy. Occupational therapists work in both public and private practice, in hospitals and rehabilitation centers, in home care and community health, in schools and clinics. Occupational therapists work with clients across the life spectrum with a diverse range of needs. With a shortage of occupational therapists across BC and Canada, graduates of the MOT program at UBC are in high demand.
"Employment of occupational therapists is expected to increase by 26 percent between 2008 and 2018, much faster than the average for all occupations." United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2011.
Major areas of research in the department include neural, cardiovascular, respiratory and clinical pharmacology as well as drug development. Students with excellent performance in their undergraduate study are admitted into the M.Sc. program. Students with outstanding performance in their first year in M.Sc. can transfer their program to Ph.D. with departmental permission.
The shared research interests in anesthesiology, pharmacology and therapeutics allow students to gain broad-based exposure to fundamental as well as medically-related aspects of drug research. Faculty members receive operating grants from CIHR, NSERC, The Heart Foundation, etc. Many of our students receive CIHR and NSRC studentship awards.
Those with a Master’s degree pursue careers in drug development, governmental agencies and many go on to do a Ph.D. degree or join the M.D. program in the medical school.
The Graduate Programs in Rehabilitation Sciences (RHSC) is jointly run by the Department of Occupational Sciences and Occupational Therapy (OSOT) and the Department of Physical Therapy (PT). It is a program for advanced research study. It focuses on the discipline of Rehabilitation Sciences, the study of providing treatment and education to persons with temporary or permanent disability to return them to maximum function, well-being and personally-satisfying levels of independence.
It encompasses the three dimensions of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (body structure and function, activity and participation) and thus spans the individual, community and society. Our faculty have active research programs that cover this diverse spectrum.
In the Graduate Programs in Rehabilitation Sciences (RHSC), we strive to create outstanding learning and research experiences for occupational therapists, physical therapists and others with various health-related disciplines. Through these opportunities, in combination with the MSc thesis, graduates advance the science of rehabilitation which aims to promote physical, mental and social well-being among people of all levels of ability. Our collaborative initiatives result in a reciprocal transfer of new knowledge among academic, clinical, and community settings.
Our faculty have an outstanding record of scholarly productivity, receiving funding from provincial and national research granting agencies. Over 30 graduate students from a broad range of backgrounds including occupational therapy, physical therapy, recreation therapy, social sciences, human kinetics, and engineering have graduated from our program. These students have authored numerous peer-reviewed journal publications and won various scholarships and awards.
Program faculty members are well integrated with several of the world class research facilities established here in BC including: Arthritis Research Centre, Brain Research Centre, Centre for Hip Health, International Collaboration on Repair Discoveries, Centre for Heart and Lung Innovation, Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute, Providence Health Care Research Institute, GF Strong Rehabilitation Centre, BC Children's Hospital Research Institute, Collaborative Research Team for the study of psychosocial issues in Bipolar Disorder.
Graduates from our MSc program go on to further academic training and become faculty members that teach and conduct health-related research at universities. They also work as research scientists, clinical scientists and consultants to government, health authorities and other organizations with interests in rehabilitation. Many of our MSc graduates choose to pursue a PhD in our program.

Unlike traditional thesis-based research master's programs, the MRSc offers a course-based degree or the option of combining courses and a work- or practice-based research project.
You can complete the MRSc degree while working full-time. This prevents any loss of income while pursuing graduate studies. Most learners choose to complete the degree within three to five years part-time. You can graduate in one year if you study full-time.
Please note, the MRSc is not an entry-level credential for rehabilitation practice in Canada or other countries: that is, completing the program does not enable you to practice as a health professional. The MRSc is an advanced degree for health professionals already working in rehabilitation.

This online two-year, 30 credit specialized program is designed to prepare surgical care professionals from many disciplines to address surgical challenges and contribute to finding solutions in low resource settings globally.
The program provides a strong foundation for present and future global surgical care professionals by developing knowledge and skills in the interpretation and use of published experience and research, balanced with applied learning in low resource settings. Students will spend four to eight weeks in an underserved location globally, producing practical “on-the-ground” skills. The location of the placement is determined by the student in consultation with a program advisor.
A blended model of practicum based learning and on-line teaching methods facilitate the participation of candidates from across Canada and around the world.

This combined program is a clinical specialty program that allows students to complete the MSc in Craniofacial Science combined with clinical specialty preparation through the Diploma in Endodontics. The program provides to successful applicants holding a DMD degree or its equivalent, education and training for potential clinicians, research workers, and teachers. Completion of the program requires successful completion of the clinical and didactic requirements associated with the diploma program in the Faculty of Dentistry, successful completion of the MSc in Craniofacial Science course requirements, and successful defense and submission of an 18-credit research thesis to the Faculty of Graduate Studies. In this program option, the degree and diploma are awarded conjointly and both must be completed to graduate. Graduates will be eligible to take the examinations for specialty certification in endodontics of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada and the American Board of Endodontics. The normal course of study is three full academic years.
Master of Science in Craniofacial Science and Diploma in Orthodontics
his combined program offered to successful applicants holding a DMD degree or its equivalent, is a clinical specialty program providing education and training for clinicians, researchers and teachers. Achievement of the Diploma in Orthodontics requires successful completion of the clinical and didactic requirements associated with the diploma program in the Faculty of Dentistry, successful completion of the MSc in Craniofacial Science course requirements, and successful defense and submission of the thesis to the Faculty of Graduate Studies. In this program option, the degree and the diploma are awarded conjointly and both must be completed to graduate. Graduates will be eligible to take the examinations for specialty certification in orthodontics offered by the Royal College of Dentists of Canada and the American Board of Orthodontics. Normal course of study is 38 months.
