The MRes in Medicine is a full time course including a nine-month research project giving you the opportunity to develop specialised knowledge in key areas of interest and to design and undertake a substantial piece of publishable research. You will be supervised by experts in their field of study.

On completion of the course you will have a comprehensive understanding of the concepts and techniques relevant to medical research and a talent to critically and creatively evaluate current issues in medicine and health.

You will also gain experience in formulating new hypotheses and exploring the causes and consequences of diseases by conducting rigorous scientific research in a laboratory or with patients.

The MRes will provide you with the skills to undertake cutting-edge research in medicine. It is an excellent preparation to progress into research at a doctorate level or to pursue careers in a higher capacity in drug discovery or translational medicine.

Programme Structure

The MRes programme comprises 180 credits, consisting of:

• A research project: 120 credits

Introduction and Course Objectives

This vocational training programme has been developed to appeal to recent biology, biomedical, biochemistry and medical graduates who aspire to develop a career in the field of clinical embryology and assisted reproductive technology (ART) and/or the associated reproductive sciences. The programme has been developed by the Division of Reproduction and Early Development within the Leeds Institute of Genetics, Health and Therapeutics in association with the clinicians and embryologists working at the Leeds Centre of Reproductive Medicine in the Leeds NHS Trust. The programme leaders have over 20 years of experience of training clinical embryologists, reproductive medicine practitioners and reproductive scientists.

This is a laboratory-based science degree not a clinically- based infertility treatment course. The programme will provide students with a detailed knowledge of the theory and practices that underpin human clinical embryology and ART. The curriculum covers: the cell and molecular biology of human reproduction, fertility, andrology and embryology; the management and efficient running of an ART laboratory; the practices, genetic and epigenetic concepts of micromanipulation and techniques such as intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) and pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD); advances in cryobiology and its application to gamete and embryo freezing and fertility preservation. It will also provide graduates with valuable insights into the theory underpinning clinical treatments and the ethical and legal controversies surrounding assisted reproduction in humans. The programme will equip graduates to pursue a career in human assisted reproduction (e.g. clinical embryology, infertility treatment) and/or research in the reproductive sciences.

The programme places a strong emphasis on all aspects of practical training for clinical embryology and assisted reproduction technology. Masters students will be tutored in research methods. They will receive hands-on training from specialist practitioners in andrology, gamete handling, IVF, ICSI, embryo culture, gamete and embryo freezing, vitrification, biopsy. Students will interact with established, clinical embryologists and reproductive medicine specialists.

Medical Imaging impinges on virtually every facet of clinical practice and is one of the key elements in diagnosis, monitoring of and in some cases guiding of therapy. Knowledge of the appropriateness and limitations of the various techniques for imaging is therefore an important skill for clinical scientists, healthcare professionals and clinicians.

It is as well to emphasise at this stage that the programmes offered in Medical Imaging are not clinical courses. However, the teaching of the technical aspects of the various imaging modalities will be firmly grounded in the clinical usage of those modalities. Many of the lecturers are also at the forefront of research in their particular field and will bring insights from, not just current imaging practice but, imaging techniques which are currently in their infancy.

An MSc and a PGDip are offered in Medical Imaging; you are allowed to transfer from your original programme, to another one, provided that you do this before you have completed the programme and before an award has been made. This MSc is designed not only for recent graduates preparing for a career in medical imaging, but also for professionals already working in the field. It aims to cover all aspects of medical imaging, from the basic physics involved, through the different modalities, to the current issues involved in working in a modern UK NHS radiology department.

You’ll learn about the ethical issues that arise across medicine and healthcare practice, but you’ll also have the opportunity to specialise in areas that interest you or suit your career aspirations. You’ll take modules on topics such as ethical issues at the beginning and end of life, autonomy and psychiatry, professional issues and allocating medical resources fairly, and focus on a topic of your choice to complete an independent dissertation.

We’re constantly developing the course and consulting with professionals working in the field, so our courses are informed by the most recent developments in practice. But you’ll be taught by active researchers with expertise in teaching ethics across medical disciplines, giving you the chance to engage with the latest academic arguments and debates.

The programme is designed for people who’ve never studied ethics or medical ethics, although we do also have applicants who have studied philosophy before. If you’re interested in thinking about key ethical issues in a reasoned and independent way, you’ll be able to explore big questions in the biomedical and healthcare spheres with the support of the Interdisciplinary Ethics Applied Centre (IDEA).

Distance Learning

There is the option to study this degree online. There are no lectures or seminars and you won’t even have to attend Leeds at any point during the course, although if you can travel there may be chances to meet other students. Instead, you’ll used specially designed interactive teaching materials and participate in structured collaborative activities. You’ll contribute to discussion groups in our Virtual Learning Environment, so you can share experiences and perspectives with students from different backgrounds worldwide.

Study Options

You can also study this subject as a PGDip qualification where you take fewer modules overall. If you don’t have a degree, we usually ask you to register for the PGDip programme – you can upgrade to the MA if you progress successfully. Both the MA and PGDip can be studied part-time over 24 months, which may be of special interest to those who are working in related fields as part of their career development.

This course is also available as an intercalated programme to students who have completed three years of a UK medical degree (or international equivalent) and are normally ranked in the top 50% of their year of study.

Course Content

This new MRes has been designed to provide you with an opportunity to develop your research skills in applied medical ethics. It provides an excellent stepping stone to PhD research.

You will begin in the first semester with intensive research methods training which will allow you to develop your skills under the supervision of expert tutors. You’ll gain a range of skills and valuable experience for a career in academic or professional research.

You will then spend the remainder of the year writing an extended dissertation in which you can examine in depth an area of particular interest to you within the rich field of medical ethics, with the support of a research supervisor.

You will meet with your research supervisor on campus in Leeds on a regular basis. If you are unable to come to Leeds the MRes is also available as an online programme.

As an MRes student you will have the opportunity to audit any relevant modules from our taught MA Biomedical & Health Care Ethics.

The Masters by research is made up of a 30-credit taught Research Methods module and a 150-credit dissertation.

Research Methods

Delivered online, this module will provide you with training in core skills and a variety of key research methodologies for undertaking high quality research in medical ethics. It also addresses methodological issues raised in the conduct of inter-disciplinary research. It will equip you to undertake a longer independent supervised dissertation on an aspect of ethics of your choice.

During the module we will cover research skills, including identifying a suitable topic for research, bibliography and referencing. We will also explore a range of methodological approaches to the discipline of ethics.

Dissertation

You will produce an independent piece of work analysing in detail an aspect of medical ethics. The work will enable you to exhibit both some awareness of detail of theoretical ethical considerations and to indicate their application to issues in medical ethics, where relevant making use of your experience in the context of professional life in medicine and healthcare. You will be supported through the process by a research supervisor.

The aim of the project is to decipher how genes which are associated with susceptibility to psoriatic disease influence inflammatory responses of joint and skin associated cells. Products from many of those genes could potentially interfere with intracellular signalling pathways (e.g. MAPK, NF-B). The project will focus on expression of such genes (e.g. A20) and their influence on signalling pathways, using cells grown from patients with or without psoriatic arthritis. Techniques include Western Blot, flow cytometric analysis, luciferase assays (NF-B), ELISA, transfection (e.g. A20 plasmid, shRNA), cell culture of primary human cells.
