Description

The Aerospace Medicine course is a unique study pathway that provides physicians with comprehensive theoretical and practical instruction in advanced aviation physiology, psychology, pathology, clinical and operational aviation medicine.

This course includes time based at the RAF Centre of Aviation Medicine (CAM), as the Centre provides an appropriate location for valuable elements of the teaching and visits to some of the service and civilian establishments used. The Centre also offers unique practical facilities which are available to students on the course.

You will complete the MSc course in one year, studying September to September. If you are following the MSc pathway, you must take modules totalling 180 credits to meet the requirements of the qualification, of which 60 will come from a research project and written dissertation.

The Postgraduate Diploma pathway requires modules with a total of 120 credits to complete the programme and can be conducted in just over six months.

Teaching

If carrying out the MSc you will receive approximately 510 contact hours at King’s and various external study locations, primarily the RAF Centre for Aviation Medicine at Henlow – this includes lectures, seminars, practical sessions.

If you are studying for the full MSc qualification, you will be expected to spend approximately 600 hours on the research project module and thesis.

Career opportunities in aerospace medicine are varied. Many undertaking specialist training have already been employed specifically for the role and are sponsored to undertake these courses. However others use such training so as to better equip themselves for potential employment.

Areas of possible careers include with airlines, aviation regulators, air traffic services, military aviation and space agencies as well as in academic or commercial research organisations. Some aviation medical examiners (AMEs) undertake the DAvMed. Appointment as an AME in the UK is now restricted to doctors on the GMC specialist register.

Based on our previous Literature & Medicine MA, this MSc allows you to choose from a broader range of modules, interact with a wider range of students, and gain a firm grounding in the medical humanities by following common required modules. The MSc in Medical Humanities incorporates the previous King's MA Literature and Medicine programmes. If you are a full-tme student, we will give you five to nine hours of teaching each week through lectures and seminars, and we will expect you to undertake 34 hours of self-study. .

If you are a part-time student, we will give you three to five hours of teaching each week through lectures and seminars in your first year and two to four hours in your second year, and we will expect you to undertake 23 hours of self-study in your first year and 11 in your second year.

You will write your dissertation in your summer, for which we will give you four hours of supervision.

This course will give you a theoretical and practical basis for explaining the functioning of the muscular, respiratory and cardiovascular systems at rest and during exercise. You will explore the effects of extreme environmental conditions on whole body physiology, including in relation to aerospace and military medicine.

You will study topics from both systemic and cellular/molecular perspectives in order to gain an understanding of the breadth of investigative approaches employed in human physiology research. You will also focus on practical work, learning how to plan and run experiments using human subjects.

The Space Physiology & Health MSc will provide you with advanced theoretical and practical training in the physiology, psychology and operational medicine of humans exposed to or working in the Space environment.

You will complete the course in one year, studying September to September and taking modules totalling 180 credits, including 60 credits from a research project and dissertation.

This course will provide opportunities for you to develop and demonstrate advanced knowledge, understanding and skills in the following areas:

You will study the ethical and legal questions raised in the context of medicine, which include genetics, assisted reproduction, abortion, assisted suicide and euthanasia, autism, psychiatric ethics and mental health law, medical research, organ donations and the allocation of scarce resources.

Course format and assessment

You will be taught through a combination of lectures and seminars.

Full time students have an average of 6 seminar hours per week. However, this will vary depending on which modules you choose to take and in which semester they are taught. Full time students are expected to spend 32-34 hours engaged in self-study per week.

Part time students have an average of 2-4 hours of seminars per week. They are expected to engage in 14-16 hours of self-study a week.

Contact time is based on 24 academic weeks (typically there is 1 reading week per semester), whereas self-study time is based on 31 academic weeks.

The total notional study hours for the MA are 1800 (10 hours per 1 credit). Notional study hours comprise formal teaching and learning activities, such as lectures and tutorials, as well as assessments and independent research and study.

Assessment

Many modules are assessed by coursework, i.e. one essay, usually of a maximum of 3500 words. Some modules are assessed by one 2-hour exam.

Many alumni go on to work in policy-related positions, which include the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority, the Human Tissue Authority, the Nuffield Council on Bioethics and the Department of Health. Assessment

The primary method of assessment for this course is a combination of unseen written examinations, coursework and presentations. The research project and dissertation will be assessed on an extended piece of writing. 

Examinations are mainly held during Examination Period 1 (January) and Examination Period 2 (May / early June). The ‘Essentials of Toxicology for Public Health Protection’ examination is, however, normally held during Examination Period 3 (August).

Resit and replacement examinations are normally scheduled during Examination Period 3 (August). Resit and replacement examinations for the 'Essentials of Toxicology for Public Health Protection' module are normally held during the following Examination Period (January).

You’ll submit your first piece of summative coursework towards the end of Term 1, and coursework submissions continue into April. The coursework for the ‘Essentials of Toxicology for Public Health Protection’ module is submitted in August.

The dissertation is submitted in early September (part-time students submit their dissertation at the end of their second year).
