Nursing is a demanding, yet rewarding profession. Our undergraduate programmes have been designed, developed and are delivered to recognise the core values of the NHS and the required standards of our accrediting body the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

We are one of the largest university trainers of Nursing and Health Professionals in the north west of England and are very proud of our strong associations and partnerships with the local NHS trusts and other stakeholders. Our award-winning pre-registration Adult Nursing programme has been developed in partnership with practice colleagues and service users to provide a high quality, flexible, student-centred and patient-focused educational experience.

This course is designed to lead to careers in Health Visiting or School Nursing. Applicants must be a first level nurse or midwife with a current or pending registration on the NMC Professional register and must have a supported practice placement. All aspects of the course focus on the development of skills, knowledge and attributes required for the SCPHN role. There is a focus on public health, community development, health needs assessment and health inequalities.

The programme builds on the core values of the NHS constitution and is approved by the NMC to offer students the opportunity to gain a specialist practitioner qualification in School Nursing or Health Visiting.

Course detail

A blended learning approach will provide the foundation to the teaching and learning strategy by way of Seminars, Masterclasses, action learning, guided independent study, simulation and workshops. Theoretical learning will be complemented by Field of Practice and Level specific seminar group facilitation, discussion, dissemination and formative feedback.

The course has an equal split between time spent in theory and time spent in practice.

Applicants should be aware that in order to successfully complete the Programme and be eligible to apply for registration as a Registered Nurse (RN), that they will need to evidence 2300 hours of theoretical learning and 2300 Practice learning (4600 hours in total). This is a Programme requirement and so may not be reflected in the allocated specified hours of learning on the academic module specifications.

You will spend a year as a member of the Experimental Cancer Medicine Team at The Christie. During this year, you will participate in four structured taught modules.

Alongside the taught elements, you will be allocated to one or more clinical trials that are being conducted by The Christie experimental cancer medicine team. You will have a named trainer and be exposed to tasks required in the setup, delivery, interpretation and audit of a clinical study.

As a nursing and physician student enrolled on this course, you will be expected to participate in patient care, with physicians and nursing staff participating in new and follow-on patient clinics, treatment and care giving episodes with patients.

This course involves engagement with a number of ideas drawn from law, economics and the social and physical sciences which are of relevance to the theory and practice of environmental and public intervention.

Modules address the existing and emerging challenges and explore contemporary management, technological and regulatory systems designed to reduce environmental risks.

A feature of the course is applied learning and an emphasis on contextualising study.

This course comprises four taught modules complemented by a research dissertation. Within the full-time course, three modules are compulsory with two studied in semester 1 and the remaining one in semester 2. The remaining module is optional and you can choose one module in semester 2 from the available options.

For part-time students the taught components span two academic years each consisting of two semesters between September and May. Year 1 involves the study of two core modules. Year 2 involves the study of one core and one optional module.

Format

This course has both full-time and part-time routes, which, for the MSc, comprises three 14-week semesters or five 14-week semesters, which you can take within one or three years respectively:

• Semester 1 - September to February
• Semester 2 - February to June
• Semester 3 - June to September

Teaching is by lectures, some delivered by visiting practitioners, fieldwork; site visits, seminars and tutorials. You will also be provided with opportunities to review practical applications of environmental interventions designed to promote public health.

This programme is aimed at medical orthopaedic trainees, GPs and specialist orthopaedic therapists. It is particularly relevant to those taking on new responsibilities in orthopaedic assessment and patient management as a result of the modernisation agenda.

Programme details

The course runs full-time over one year and part-time over three years giving you the chance to exit with the following awards:

• Postgraduate Certificate: two modules
• Postgraduate Diploma: four modules
• Masters: four modules plus a dissertation

Part-time study with elements of distance learning is delivered in blocks for those involved in busy clinical practice.

Observational clinical placements in hospitals and sports clubs are arranged for full-time students in the specialist areas of spinal orthopaedics, lower limb orthopaedics and upper limb orthopaedics.

Format

Delivery is by full-time (one year) and part-time attendance (three years) at the University. Please note: international applicants are only able to apply for the full-time route.

A programme of formal lectures, case discussion seminars and workshops, together with online learning is delivered to students by a team of orthopaedic consultants, radiologists, advanced therapists and other specialists. Attendance is approximately five to six days per module with distance on-line learning released weekly and live webinars. Both full and part-time students are taught together.

All supportive material from the taught days is recorded on our virtual learning environment, Blackboard.

Each of the three clinical modules, upper limb, lower limb, and spinal, covers the advanced assessment and differential diagnosis of orthopaedic and sports-related disorders, including pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative surgery management and rehabilitation strategies.

For those attending full-time, additional observational placements are an integral part of the course. These are arranged for specialist areas of spinal orthopaedics, upper limb orthopaedics and lower limb orthopaedics. Placements are offered in key orthopaedic departments and sports clubs.

Research skills sessions are integrated throughout the course.
