COURSE SUMMARY

This course has been running for more than forty years and is recognised as providing a good grounding for students interested in the management, engineering and planning of transport infrastructure. It takes students from a wide range of relevant backgrounds.

The emphasis of the course is on current methodology and practice to improve your employability with engineering and planning departments of local and central governments, passenger transport executives, and transport consultants.

This degree is accredited as meeting the requirements for Further Learning for a Chartered Engineer (CEng) for candidates who have already acquired an Accredited CEng (Partial) BEng(Hons) or an Accredited IEng (Full) BEng/BSc (Hons) undergraduate first degree.

COURSE DETAILS

Transport engineering modules relate to traffic engineering and transport systems design. Transport planning modules consider policy (such as reducing car dependency), travel demand forecasting and appraisal. If you have a civil engineering background you can elect to take an optional module in transport infrastructure design as an alternative to the extended modelling and appraisal work.

The course is supported by field surveys, seminars and studio work, allowing students to experience a range of relevant computer packages and methodological approaches.

You are also required to produce a dissertation with the close supervision of an expert academic member of staff.

This course may be taken on a full-time or part-time basis. The part-time course enables candidates who would not normally be able to obtain a year’s release from employment to also study in depth and is used by some employers as part of their formal graduate training programme.

TEACHING

The course combines formal lectures and seminars with extensive coursework including transport planning studio work, traffic survey projects, appraisal assignments and statistics tutorials. The teaching panel includes visiting specialists with expert knowledge of specific topics.

You will be exposed to a range of relevant transport software.

Part-time students study the taught modules over two years on a day-release basis (currently Thursdays)

ASSESSMENT

Assessment is by a combination of formal examinations, tutorial and seminar work, course assignment portfolio and a dissertation.  The overall breakdown is:

  • Examination: 50%
  • Coursework: 50%

CAREER PROSPECTS

Graduates from this course work in local authorities, consultancies and transport utilities. Some graduates work on projects overseas. The postgraduate qualification is highly valued by employers.

The MSc award is approved as further learning for those working towards Chartered Engineer status. The  programme team has close contacts with local employers and the Professional Institutions.

The MSc in Management of Projects prepares students for a professional role in a wide range of projects by providing students with an understanding of both the people-related and technical requirements necessary for the successful management of projects, as well as the organisational and strategic aspects.

This MSc is one of four MSc courses within the Management of Projects Group of Programmes. The other MSc courses are: Commercial Project Management, Construction Project Management and Engineering Project Management.

The School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering has a long history of delivering project management related masters courses and the staff who deliver the programme are drawn for a wide variety of backgrounds and industrial experience.
Teaching and learning

The Management of Projects MSc is a full time course which is studied over 12 months, starting in September each year. The course comprises eight taught course units, each worth 15 credits, and a research dissertation worth 60 credits. In addition, the Applied Project Management unit is course-specific unit which uses simulation exercises supplemented by guest speakers to provide students with hands-on practical experience of managing a project throughout its life cycle. Students must also select three option units and carry out a Management of Projects based dissertation.

Assessment of the taught part of the course is via a combination of formal written examinations and coursework assignments, which will include group work and oral presentations. Some assessment is based on online material provided by the Association for Project Management (APM) and PRINCE2 (a process-based method for effective project management).

Career opportunities

The MSc Management of Projects acquaints students with the basic processes of project management focuses specifically on the application of project management techniques and the people management challenges in application of project management techniques, using simulation exercises to provide students with hands-on practical experience of managing a project throughout its life cycle, developing team working, decision making and communication skills which employers value highly. The Masters award consists of three core taught modules and one elective module, followed by a dissertation.  The PgDip requires the completion of three core taught modules and one elective taught module.  The PgCert requires the completion of two of the core taught modules.  All modules are delivered over a 15 week period and are assessed through coursework.  

For the full-time study option:

You will study two 30 credit modules in each of your first two semesters on campus; these are designed to give you the core knowledge and experience required.  In the final semester you will progress to the dissertation.

This course is for students who have completed a RIBA Part One course in Architecture. The course comprises of studio, research methods, dissertation and professional studies units, delivered through a diverse range of research driven ateliers and workshops. Cities in Africa, Asia and Latin America struggle with growth, and urban communities in the developing world are increasingly faced with problems relating to poverty, informality and inequality, climate change, insecurity and lack of social cohesion. Sustainable urban development planning in the global South is thus a complex task with many dimensions.

This interdisciplinary course, offered by the Global Urban Research Centre (GURC), draws on the advanced expertise of staff from the Global Development Institute (GDI), Planning and Environmental Management, Geography and Architecture, from within the School of Environment, Education and Development as well as Alliance Manchester Business School. It is suitable for students wishing to improve their understanding of urban development in cities of the global South in general, as well as development professionals seeking to acquire new expertise in dealing with urban issues, and social development specialists working in the voluntary, private or public sector. We particularly encourage applications from Latin American, African and Asian students.

Aims

An understanding of the cutting edge conceptual debates in global urban development theory and practice, by exploring analytical approaches and relating these to operational frameworks for policy, planning and programming to promote more equitable and sustainable urban development in cities and towns of the global South.

Analytical and practical skills to deepen your knowledge of global urban development and planning theories, as well as the ability to identify, investigate and justify possible solutions to problems arising out of theory and practice (including competency in developing reasoned arguments, finding commonalities and differences, and defending different approaches).

Skills necessary to gather, organise and employ evidence and information from a wide variety of sources, complemented by guidance on how best to manage workloads and obtain research materials, and support to develop your area of expertise through relevant research culminating in a dissertation.

Teaching and learning

The programme requires students to pass a total of eight course units totalling 120 credits of postgraduate study and to undertake a dissertation of 12000 -15000 words which provides a further 60 credits. You must normally complete 4 core course units compulsory for all students, and 4 optional course units selected from those available both within GDI and in other relevant disciplines within the Faculty of Humanities.

Part-time Study
Part-time students complete the full-time programme over 27 months. There are no evening or weekend course units available on the part-time programme, therefore if you are considering taking a programme on a part-time basis, you should discuss the requirements with the Programme Director first and seek approval from your employer to have the relevant time off. Timetabling information is normally available from late August from the Programme Administrator and you will have the opportunity to discuss course unit choices during Welcome Week with the Programme Directors.

Coursework and assessment

Most courses are assessed by essays, class presentations and examinations or a combination of these (depending on the course units selected). A dissertation of between 12,000-15,000 words provides an opportunity to obtain an advanced level of expertise in a particular subject area through supervised individual research.

You will develop an advanced knowledge and skill base that can be applied to professional activities relating to a variety of urban-related fields. Past students have gone on to work as consultants for international development cooperation agencies; planners for national and local governments and private companies; and as practitioners in slum upgrading programmes, or international networks and national NGOs in cities in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

Accrediting organisations

This course is accredited by the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI). After completion of relevant work experience, you may be able in due course to proceed to full RTPI membership. Full RTPI accreditation is subject to appropriate option choice.
