The Master of Engineering Studies (Life Cycle Management) is a unique postgraduate programme in New Zealand. 

This qualification is suitable if you either have an undergraduate degree and wish to specialise in environmental footprinting and life cycle management, or you have found yourself working in a related role and need to upskill. You do not have to have an engineering degree to enrol.

What is life cycle management?

Life cycle management is about improving the environmental profile of a product from extraction of raw materials through manufacture, distribution, use and on to waste management.

Critical thinking and skills

Let our experts help you develop your own expertise. You will learn the theory and practice behind life cycle management and environmental footprinting from lecturers who have been working internationally, contributing to research and the development of life cycle management standards.

When you have completed this programme you will be able to undertake life cycle assessment and related environmental footprinting studies.

You will learn how to critically evaluate the LCA system modeling options available for a decision situation and evaluate the role of alternative life cycle based approaches in environmental management.

Real-world learning

You will gain an in-depth understanding of the theory of life cycle management and environmental footprinting - but also focus on practical information that can be applied to real-world situations. 

You are encouraged to apply the skills developed during the programme in real-life situations during exercises and assignments.

Flexibility

You can study towards the Master of Engineering Studies on campus, or study via our distance learning. This gives you the flexibility to remain in full-time employment while studying. Massey University has been offering distance education for over 50 years and you will be able to take advantage of our well-developed systems for teaching and learning.

In the energy management major of the Master of Engineering Studies, you will gain an detailed understanding of energy efficiency, looking at detail of energy use in industry and commercial settings, as well as tools for energy systems analysis and efficient building design.

A unique qualification

It is a unique postgraduate programme in New Zealand. Taught in conjunction with world-renowned Murdoch University in Australia, it is the only fully-focussed energy management postgraduate programme in New Zealand. The programme has been running for over fifteen years.

Learning in a global context

Your learning will be set in the context of global renewable energy systems and tools. You will learn the detail of contemporary renewable energy issues including greenhouse science, global energy systems, policy, economics and management. This will specifically cover renewable energy devices, resources and system design.

The renewable energy systems major includes an optional research project, where you can either investigate a topic you are interested in, or work with us to develop an industry-relevant piece of work.

Real-world learning

You will gain an in-depth understanding of the theory of renewable energy systems, but also focus on practical information that can be applied to real-world situations. This could be through using the international Long Range Energy Alternatives Planning System (LEAP) model to assess climate change mitigation options for a country, city or community. You will also learn how to measure renewable energy resources, and understanding the challenges of providing energy efficiency or renewable energy systems in developing countries as part of sustainable development.

The programme also covers the social issues to change human behaviour regarding the deployment of renewable energy systems and related greenhouse gas emission reductions.

The Master of Māori and Indigenous Business (MMAIBus) is a 180-credit, part-time, online master's degree delivered in partnership with the University of Auckland, Auckland University of Technology, Massey University, University of Otago, Victoria University of Wellington and The University of Waikato. The six universities share delivery of the programme providing you with access to leading academics and practitioners nationwide. Students enrol online with the university of their choice.

The MMAIBus is tailored to help you gain the skills and knowledge to lead the burgeoning Māori economy.

The burgeoning Māori economy needs skilled graduates able to stimulate local, national and international growth. You will gain advanced skills, knowledge and understanding of the practice and theory of Māori and Indigenous business, organisations and communities.

You will gain insight into cultural values and ethical business practice; be able to conduct independent research, seek innovative solutions and develop executable business strategies; and critically analyse, using culturally appropriate methods, sophisticated theories and appropriate technologies.

Who is it for?

MMAIBus is for those involved in Māori and Indigenous business and those who wish to enhance their understanding in this field, perhaps as business owners, managers or administrators. This post-experience, distance-taught programme will equip graduates for senior leadership roles.

How does it work

You will study part-time over three years. Each course is distance-taught in blocks of ten weeks, four per calendar year. You will undertake self-directed, individual and collaborative work and assignment preparation via an online learning management system, enabling students to study without compromising work commitments.

Throughout the programme you will engage with dynamic, relevant and meaningful content which has evolved from consultation with iwi, hapū and whānau, community and corporate leaders.

Your study will be kicked off with a two-day wānanga, which will connect you with your national community of MMAIBus staff and fellow students. Support services and group collaboration will also be explained to you during the wānanga.

The Master of Quality Systems gives you a comprehensive understanding of the various functions that coexist and interrelate in a quality-systems oriented organisation. You will learn the tools and techniques used within the context of management and leadership of modern organisational systems.

The Master of Quality Systems has reduced in 2015 from 240 credits to 180 credits. What this means is that you can now complete this qualification in 1.5 years of full-time study. The 180 credits incorporate the Post Graduate Diploma level qualification, which is a possible exit point after 120 credits are obtained. If you study part-time the qualification takes between 2.5 and five years.
