The Research Master's programme in Ancient, Medieval and Renaissance Studies focuses on interdisciplinary study of the material, social, and intellectual developments in Europe (including the Mediterranean region) from Antiquity through the Middle Ages to the Renaissance. Within this long period you can focus on your academic interests by choosing one of four tracks:

1. Ancient Studies

2. Medieval Studies

3. Medieval Celtic Studies

4. Renaissance Studies.

Within each track, you will work with source materials in their original languages, including in manuscript form. The Ancient Studies track has a keen interest in archaeology. The Medieval Studies and Renaissance Studies tracks go beyond a solely historical approach by including courses in literature, linguistics, art history, musicology, and history. In the Medieval Studies track, you may specialize in either Medieval History, Medieval Art History, Medieval Literature, or Medieval Musicology. Medieval Celtic Studies combines literary studies with historical linguistics.

We invite you to critically reflect on the production of art and architecture, and the role of patronage; investigate the reasons why so many artist went abroad, and how they became agents in the international diffusion of art theory, style, and repertoire.

You will also have the opportunity to study other specific subjects that align with your own personal interests. Our close ties with major art museums and other cultural organisations both in the Netherlands and abroad mean that the academic and practical work are closely linked.

What does this Master entail?

In the Master's programme History of Politics and Society you will learn how to use historical insights into the functioning of democracy, citizenship and the market to solve current-day problems.

Use historical insights to solve present-day issues
Have you wondered how some societies manage to achieve wealth, security, justice, and freedom – and eventual happiness – while others do not? What role do citizenship, democracy, and the organisation of the market play in this process? Why do you think it is so difficult to avoid negative effects such as social polarisation and environmental damage?

History and origins of institutions
These are the core questions addressed in our Master’s programme in History of Politics and Society. The central theme is the concept of ‘institutions’, in the broadest sense of the word: the formal and informal rules, customs, and organisational structures that make up a society, but are themselves the result of a historical development process. As such, this programme is closely related to Institutions, one of Utrecht University’s strategic international research themes.

In this programme, you will study the history and origins of institutions over the past 1,000 years. The emphasis is mainly on Europe in the modern age, but emphatically placed within a broader perspective, as the programme also pays attention to other eras and other parts of the world. You will combine your historical knowledge and academic skills with concepts from the social sciences. You will learn how to use comparative research methods, and methods for long-term analysis. You will develop the tools to contribute, as a historian, to the solution of contemporary problems.

Judged best in the field

The highly regarded Keuzegids Master’s Selection Guide 2016 ranked Utrecht University’s International Relations in Historical Perspective programme as the best in the field in the Netherlands.

Elsevier Best Studies Top Rated Programme

In this year's Elsevier Best Studies Survey, students have also rated International Relations as the best programme.
International Relations in Historical Perspective bridges the historical and political science approaches of international relations. In this way, the programme offers you the best of both worlds.

The international political stage is much like a game of chess between multiple players. During the course of this Master's programme you will gain a greater understanding of the parties involved, and prepare yourself for a future as a participant in the game of global politics.

Political theory is an important tool in the analysis of international developments. In order to fully understand those developments, however, you need a wider historical viewpoint. Nothing is without its history – and while history never repeats itself exactly, you can learn a great deal from it. By bridging history and political science, the Master of International Relations in Historical Perspective (IR/HP) offers in-depth insight into both worlds.

The programme content uses central research themes that help shed light on modern international politics and provide students with the tools to analyse a wide range of topics.

During the programme, you can choose to participate in an internship of at least three months, which is an important step towards obtaining future employment. You will put your knowledge and skills into practice, and this experience will form an important part of your resume.
