Customer engagement is increasingly key with the benefits of ‘big data’ providing detailed analytics for campaigns. Media planning is becoming more scientific and measurable, moving customers up the loyalty ladder to generate content for brands. Advertising is the catalyst to delivering integrated campaigns and Southampton Solent’s MA Advertising and Multimedia Communications programme prepares students for making a strategic contribution.

Recognising the close relationship with marketing and public relations, the course focuses on emerging forms of advertising which blur the boundaries with journalism and the importance of content marketing. Teaching is delivered by a team of industry professionals and the course covers the development of contemporary integrated marketing campaigns.

As the roles of multimedia advertising management, digital newsroom manager, marketing professional, and corporate PR manager are converging, students are encouraged to develop a collaborative and interdisciplinary approach, and will have the opportunity to gain first-hand experience by preparing campaigns for live client briefs. Students are also encouraged to seek work-placement and freelance opportunities through the University’s student run agency, Solent Creatives, as well as prepare competition briefs for the Design & Art Directors Association (D&AD) and the Young Creative Network (YCN).

What you will study

Year one

Advertising in a World of Converging Communication (30 credits)

This unit covers contemporary advertising practice and theory combining traditional mass media approaches with emerging social media and mobile channels. This unit develops practical skills and a critical awareness of the issues and practices within advertising in a world where increasingly the target audience can skip ads and brands combine paid, owned, earned and shared media to engage consumers. After introducing advertising principles, the unit moves on to explore the digital mix, content marketing, native advertising and immersive, augmented experiences. The traditional advertising roles of art director, copywriter, account manager and media planner are still important industry pathways but are increasingly challenged by agile practice, this unit considers the implications. Assessments are designed to test application of your learning in both theory and practice. 

Multimedia Campaign Planning (30 credits)

Students get the practical opportunity to develop and implement a number of campaign activities across a wide variety of platforms, testing their ability to integrate paid, owned, shared and earned media in a PR campaign.

Media Measurement & Evaluation (15 credits)

This unit introduces students to the challenge of measurement techniques applied in advertising, marketing, promotion and PR sectors, including the evolution of RoE (return on engagement)

Research Methods (15 credits)

This unit raises the students’ research skills to Master’s level, including SPSS and other methodologies that are relevant to their particular areas of interest (Shared Unit)

Professional Practice (30 credits)

This unit positions the MA programme in terms of the student’s career aspiration, identifying skill sets and development needs in a PDP, which forms the basis of a freelance/workplace project- and informs the student’s choice of Major Project or dissertation

Major Project/Dissertation (60 credits)

The culmination of the MA degree, where the theory and practice learned in the previous units informs the student’s principal learning outcome- a campaign that demonstrates their professional attainment or a dissertation that critically examines a crucial industry issue, generating original thinking. Both project and dissertation require primary research to a master’s level.

The course is taught by industry experts who have established practitioner careers and who have strong links within the industry. Students have the opportunity to work on live client briefs and are encouraged to gain a work placement or freelance project.

Past students on the University’s creative advertising courses have benefitted from visits to London-based advertising and creative agencies.

Students who are in work while taking the course have the opportunity to adapt the topic of their assignments in several units to suit the needs of their employers.

Placements

The Professional Practice unit requires students to undertake a work placement or complete a freelance project. Students are encouraged to source their own client (through Solent Creatives) or to find a work placement that is appropriate to their career ambitions. The minimum requirement for a placement is two weeks, however placements and projects can vary in length, depending on client needs.

Research Methods

The research methods unit prepares students for their MA final project by equipping them with the skills and knowledge necessary to define a research project, select an appropriate methodological approach and investigate a key research topic utilising secondary and/or primary research.

Professional Practice

This unit will explore and critically analyse the fashion, beauty and creative industries around the world. The unit will equip students with advanced skills to enable them to research the industry they seek to work in and to critically analyse opportunities. Students will be supported to produce a professional development plan - key to this will be an element of work-based learning.

Concept Development

The primary focus of this unit is on developing the wide range of conceptual skills necessary to effectively and innovatively communicate to a consumer audience. This unit provides the opportunity to develop, in response to a range of set briefs, concepts for different outcomes (for example digital, film, print and fashion shows).

Technical Image Design Skills 

This unit covers the technical aspects of creative and art direction. Using a range of software students will focus on understanding technical specifications and design problems aligned to producing web, print and time based outcomes.

Masters Project

Creative Writing modules are taught by practicing writers, and focus on your own creative writing while engaging in close study of contemporary work. Faculty and fellow students at Southampton come from all over the world – including India, Columbia, Pakistan, Iceland, the USA, Nigeria, and of course the UK – bringing a wide range of experiences and writing traditions, and giving our programmes an international focus. Southampton Solent’s innovative and transmedia MA Critical Creative Practice programme focuses on individual student-centred learning and encourages critical creative practice across the creative spectrum, including art, design, fashion, photography, media arts and technology, helping to enhance employability and leaving you well-prepared to progress within your chosen creative field.

Taught by both creative industry professionals and academic practitioners, the course enables students to develop ideas and engage with the emerging material and digital cultures of the future, as well as the fast-changing demands of the creative industries and the associated changes to cultural production, consumption and interpretation.

The course structure is theory and practice based. The theoretical element consists of critical core units which reference visual culture, cultural theory, critical theory, art and design history, media culture, and material and digital culture. The interdisciplinary practice element relates to creative practice in the fields of art, design, fashion, photography, media arts and technology.

The integration of theory and practice is central to the course and learning is carefully structured through these interdependent units to develop a broad base of interrelated experiences, whilst also providing the opportunity to specialise through the professional practice unit and the choice of final dissertation or final project.

Solent University provides a well-resourced environment to help students develop and harness enterprising and entrepreneurial practice. Students on this course have access to dedicated studio space to develop their individual creative practice. Other creative spaces and equipment available to students include photographic studios, fashion studios, Mac rooms, recording equipment, editing suites, and performance and exhibition space.

Solent’s innovative new master’s programme offers a postgraduate learning experience enabling you to expand and develop your intellectual and creative approaches to design for health and wellbeing.

The need for spaces, buildings and interior products to create a positive environment for occupants is increasing. This offers an opportunity for a new generation of designers specialising in design for health and wellbeing. Solent’s MA Design for Health and Wellbeing also offers a platform for progression to employment in the design, healthcare consultancy or related fields.

The curriculum combines theory and practical elements, based on core areas of design, science and functionality to enhance immediate surroundings. The MA Design Management explores the effective use of design in a business context, encompassing product design, process design, service design and brand design. You’ll gain an understanding of the whole design management cycle, from the identification of market trends and use of research to inform the design process, through to branding, marketing, after-sales and product recycling. The programme is taught by academics with industry experience and research expertise, including specialist knowledge of the relationship between design and finance, and design and law. They use interactive activities such as practical mini projects, study visits to London museums and a simulation workshop to consolidate your learning. This innovative programme does not adopt a traditional classroom model of delivery, but enables you to develop specialist expertise through a combination of independent study and small-scale research, usually in your own work context, with tutor support and full access to University facilities.

Specialist study is available across a wide range of areas, and we encourage you to contact us to discuss whether we could support you with your particular area of interest. For example, in recent years some generic areas have included:

Group study

The programme is also ideal for groups working more collaboratively, and can be tailored to address organisational needs, for example, groups of colleagues working together within a single school/organisation or across a number of schools/organisations. Subject to demand, we can offer a bespoke pathway which combines a small taught component with group seminars and individual tutorials, emphasising collaboration and the role of constructive dialogue between peers as co-investigators.
