Our course enables you to meet the growing need for increased knowledge in cross-cultural communication. You will receive communication-focused training and develop expertise in cross-cultural communication. The course covers understanding how cultures and human behaviour reflexively interconnect.

Changing social conditions and circumstances require new ways of dealing with people, and fresh ways of interacting and communicating with people of other cultures.

There is an urgent need to improve our knowledge and understanding of the processes and issues involved in cross-cultural communication, and to discover how such knowledge can be effectively applied in everyday experiences.

What this means in practice is that we need to develop our knowledge of why and how communication 'works' and how and why it sometimes does not 'work'.

The course answers questions including how cultural background impacts upon successful communication and how language, thought, and behaviour are interrelated.

The Cross-Cultural Communication (CCC) MA is relevant if you wish to study communication, language and culture. It will also suit anyone intending to work, or are already working, in international and cross-cultural environments where communication is an essential aspect of that work, as for example:

This course has two stages lasting one year each. You can either:

Each module tends to last one semester. Some optional modules are taught in short, intensive blocks and/or on occasional weekends.

The course consists of three main parts, each comprising 60 credits.

Placements

You are encouraged to apply your research interests to real world case studies, particularly of international organisations or workplaces with which you have a connection.

For example, your empirical project submitted in research file three can be in connection with voluntary work (for a charity or NGO) or an internship, arranged over the summer towards the end of the course..

As a part time student you can conduct a research project of relevance to your employer and/or industry.

Course Description

The course is suitable for graduates and experienced journalists. It has an international context suitable for students from across the globe.

The way we teach and deliver this course is continually informed by best practice across the industry.

You will undertake three intensive taught modules in professional practice in the third semester instead of a traditional research dissertation. These modules will be taught by specialist tutors from the industrial sector with strong backgrounds in journalism on print, broadcast and digital platforms.

The three compulsory modules in semester three are: Advanced Reporting Skills, Online Journalism, and Broadcast and Video Journalism. As part of the broadcast module, you will prepare a video news package and you will spend a day working in modern TV studios, presenting your news packages in the form of an evening television magazine programme.

Delivery

You will complete 120 credits of compulsory and optional modules through:
•lectures
•seminars
•practical workshops

Depending on your module choice, you will study three or four modules per semester. You will work independently and in groups to:
•undertake wider reading
•take part in discussions
•develop topics for investigation with advice from tutors

Module assessment is by coursework consisting of:
•essays
•oral presentations
•reports
•projects

There are no timetabled sessions during the seventh of the 12 weeks. This allows you to catch up on your work or, if you are progressing well, take a break.

The course runs from the start of September until the end of August the following year. We recommend that you arrange accommodation in Newcastle for the duration of the course.

Facilities: You will have access to a range of specialist facilities available through Culture Lab. You will have access to:

•audio and video-editing software
•a computer-editing suite with Adobe CS6
•mobile studio equipment and editing suites are in development.

The Film: Theory and Practice MA provides you with a sophisticated understanding of films as systems of meaning. Your study covers areas such as film-making, historical cinema, screenwriting and narrative.

The course will advance your knowledge of the musculature of cinematography and editing, and the nerve system of narrative conventions, authorship, genre, power, aesthetics, stardom and nationality. You can specialise in areas of film theory, or in film practice; the latter including screenwriting, film-making and cinema management.

You will develop your own scholarly approaches to film through exploring a range of positions in film studies, and a range of historical periods and national/transnational cinemas.

By the end of the course you will have acquired knowledge of a range of analytical and theoretical principles in film studies and an array of national/transnational cinemas, including:
-British
-Chinese
-French
-American
-North African
-Spanish and Latin American

If you choose to work in film production you will usually have a finished film within 12 weeks.

Our graduates have progressed into a variety of careers, including: academia, media and journalism, cinema management, and film production. Many of our MA students go on to PhD research.

The study of film has a long history at Newcastle. Our community of film scholars shares specialisms in:

Our research interests also range widely in Anglophone, French, Hispanic, East Asian and Middle Eastern cinemas.

Award-winning film-makers, Tina Gharavi and Ian MacDonald, bring a wealth of professional experience to the teaching of film production. We collaborate with the Tyneside Cinema to provide work experience opportunities and in-depth knowledge in film exhibition and distribution.

We have a thriving research culture in film. The Research Centre in Film and Digital Media organises a diverse range of activities such as visiting speaker series, student or staff-oriented conferences and symposiums, and Chinese and Spanish film festivals.

Work experience

In two optional modules: Exhibition Culture and Professional Placement, we collaborate with the Tyneside Cinema in providing opportunities for work experience.

You will also have the opportunity to get involved in the organisation of conferences and film festivals.

Facilities

You will have the opportunity to use Culture Lab, a complex for creative practice which includes a stock of film cameras and editing suites, as well as motion-capture, animation and sound-mixing technology.

The Language Resource Centre and Robinson Library hold large collections of international films and film magazines. You will also have access to a dedicated postgraduate suite including computers, workspaces, a kitchen and showers.

There are fantastic local film facilities including the Tyneside Cinema and British Film Institute Mediatheque. You will also have guided access to Tyne and Wear Archives.

Delivery

The majority of taught modules are offered in the first semester, including some sessions which are run in the early evening and on Saturdays. During the year there is a development to a greater element of self-study and semi-independent research and project work.

You complete the course with a research project focusing on a topic of interest to you.

There is an extended induction programme that provides you with support for advanced study, including assignment writing and information and communications and technology (ICT) training.

Placements

You will have the opportunity to carry out a placement as part of your taught modules. Your placement will be in an educational setting such as a local primary or secondary school. This is enjoyable and useful in contextualising your understanding of learning theory.

You also have the option of taking a longer placement outside the UK, adding to the international perspectives nature of the course.
