Our Management and Business Studies (Research) MA is designed to provide you with the essential skills as well as the advanced knowledge and understanding of business and management to proceed to doctoral research. It also forms part of the 1+3 (Master's plus PhD) scheme under the Doctoral Training Centre.

Nearly all criminology staff have received funding from leading research institutions and organisations such as Economic and Social Research Council, and they often work in partnership with state and third sector organisations such as Youth Offending Teams and homelessness charities.

There is an emphasis throughout on comparative housing studies, focusing on the different countries in the UK as well as elsewhere, and students have the opportunity to take part in field study visits during their studies.

The programme is informed by current research and practice with a special focus on sustainability. Staff teaching on the programme are mainly housing specialists with close connections to practice.

This programme is fully accredited by the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) which describes Northumbria University as a centre of excellence. The programme has been designed to meet the full academic requirements for membership of the CIH. When students who have successfully completes the postgraduate diploma have sufficient professional practice experience they need only subsequently undertake the CIH's professional practice element (APEX) for full membership (which confers the designation MCIH).

The School of the Built Environment has entered into a Partnership with the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) to promote excellence in teaching and the surveying profession. Our Finance and Economics (Research) MA is designed to provide you with the essential skills, as well as an advanced knowledge and understanding of economics and finance, to proceed to doctoral research. It forms part of the 1+3 (Master's plus PhD) scheme under the North East Doctoral Training Centre.

Through the course you will develop:
-A thorough understanding of social science theory, approaches and research methods
-An understanding of research methods specific to finance and/or economics
-Knowledge of advanced scholarship and practice in areas within finance/economics as well as a broader awareness of cutting edge research across the social sciences

Delivery

You take research training modules, made up of generic skills which are taught as part of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Research Training Programme, and subject-specific research methods and empirical techniques.

You take further modules, both compulsory and optional, in core subject-specific knowledge, geared to either economics or finance. Finally, the course culminates in a dissertation.

Teaching and learning take place in workshops and practical classes, lectures, seminars, team-based problem-solving groups and in supervisory meetings for research papers and the dissertation.

The MAs are very flexible in nature and you will have the option to study modules across the three different courses.

Delivery

The majority of taught modules are offered in the first semester, including some sessions which are run in the early evening and on Saturdays. During the year there is a development to a greater element of self-study and semi-independent research and project work.

You complete the course with a research project focusing on a topic of interest to you.

There is an extended induction programme that provides you with support for advanced study, including assignment writing and information and communications and technology (ICT) training.

Placements

You will have the opportunity to carry out a placement as part of your taught modules. Your placement will be in an educational setting such as a local primary or secondary school. This is enjoyable and useful in contextualising your understanding of learning theory.
