- Description -

The programme provides opportunities for students to develop and demonstrate knowledge and understanding and skills in Philosophy of Medicine and Psychiatry. They will also have the opportunity to study other areas of Philosophy, selected from a broad range of modules, covering all areas of the subject. Those converting in from other subjects at undergraduate level will be strongly encouraged to take 'General Philosophy' as one of their options.

The programme has three elements:

(i) Two core modules, worth 20 credits each: Philosophy of Medicine and Perspectives on Death & Killing
(ii) Dissertation of around 10,000 words, on a topic in the philosophy of medicine, worth 60 credits.
(iii) Around four modules chosen from the MA courses in Philosophy, including General Philosophy, totalling 80 credits (with permission, one course may be taken outside the Department).

All students, including part-time students, should ensure that they are available to attend seminars at least two days a week.

- Course purpose -

The programme is geared equally to students who already have some training in Philosophy and to those who wish to convert into the field after pursuing another subject at undergraduate level (which may be, but need not be, Medicine). It will enable the former students to consolidate their existing knowledge and to augment it with a close focus on issues in the Philosophy of Medicine. The latter students will normally be expected (though not strictly required) to take a special ‘General Philosophy’ module, which will introduce them to key theories and arguments, concepts and terminology, and classic texts from right across the philosophical spectrum. For students of both kinds, the programme will provide a firm foundation for subsequent doctoral research.

Mostly taught through lectures and seminars; assessed through coursework and/or examinations plus a dissertation.

Career Prospects:

Further research in philosophy of medicine, or one or other branch of the medical profession; but also teaching, management, the financial or public sector.

The program has been designed to ensure that the theory learned by participants is applied to patient-based examples and readily integrated into their day-to-day work. Please note that the Master of Science in Medicine (Clinical Epidemiology) and the Master of Medicine (Clinical Epidemiology) are essentially the same program but with different admission requirements. Only medical graduates (i.e those with an MB BS) may be admitted to the Master of Medicine while non-medical graduates may be admitted to the Master of Science in Medicine. Students enrolled in the Master of Medicine and Master of Science in Medicine follow the same program of study (with the exception, in some cases, of practical work), with the only distinction between them being the title of the degree they are awarded on completion.

Introduction

The Warwick History Department is recognised internationally as a centre for innovative and influential research and is consistently ranked among the best history departments in the UK. The MA in the History of Medicine aims to introduce students to the advanced study of the history of medicine, and to equip them with the conceptual and practical skills to carry out independent historical research in this field. The students on the MA are encouraged to engage with a range of concepts, and to place developments within medical theory and practice in a broad social and cultural framework.

The Term One core module ‘Themes and Methods in Medical History’ is designed to introduce students to some of the main historiographical approaches and debates within the history of medicine from the early modern period to the twenty-first century. The module focuses on the evolution of ideas, institutions and practices within medicine, the reception of new approaches and lay responses, the structure of medical practice and the medical professions, and the scientific, social and cultural context of medical intervention. Students are encouraged to situate illness, disease and health care in a broad context, and to frame discussions in seminars in response to a detailed and critical survey of the literature in this area.

The Term Two core module, 'Matters of Life and Death', will address three sets of topics in the history of medicine (broadly construed) selected by its students from a menu of possible options. This unusual structure gives 'Matters of Life and Death' the flexibility required to ensure that it is always focused on subjects closely related to student interests and dissertation research. Possible topics range across the expertise of teaching and research staff in the Centre for the History of Medicine, and of our Associates in the wider University context.

Students actively engage with a wide range of sources available to the historian of medicine (e.g. medical texts, practice records, diaries, case records, public health reports and health propaganda, and visual sources).

Teaching and learning

The MA course is taught through small-group seminars, workshops and individual tutorials. Assessment is entirely by written work. There are no examinations.

Specialist facilities

Oxford Brookes is home to the Centre for Medical Humanities (CMH). The Centre was established in early 2015. It marks an exciting expansion and diversification of the work previously conducted through the Centre for Health, Medicine and Society which over the past 15 years has been the beneficiary of substantial support from both Oxford Brookes University and the Wellcome Trust. The CMH is building on this track record of outstanding research and grant successes, innovative teaching, career development and public outreach. Engaging with the expanding field of medical humanities, the CMH brings historians of medicine together with scholars from History, History of Art, Philosophy, Social and Life Sciences as well as Anthropology and Religion. It thus aims to foster genuine interdisciplinary collaboration amongst staff and students through a range of new research and teaching initiatives, which reflect the new concerns with the relationship between medicine and the humanities in the twentieth first century.

Students have access to Oxford Brookes University’s special Welfare collection, as well as numerous local medical archive resources. They also have access to the world famous Bodleian Library, a copyright library, which houses all books published in the United Kingdom and Ireland. In addition to the Bodleian and its unparalleled collection of books and rare historical manuscripts, there are affiliated libraries such as Rhodes House, home to the Bodleian Library of Commonwealth and African Studies, and the Vere Harmsworth Library of the Rothermere American Institute, where students will find one of the finest collections of publications on the Political, Economic and Social History of the United States from colonial times to the present.

Oxford is a lively centre for events, exhibitions, seminars and open lectures in various specialist areas of history, which staff and students at Brookes regularly attend.

It is also an easy bus or train ride to London for convenient access to a wider resource of historical materials. These include various seminars and lecture series offered by the University of London and the Institute of Historical Research. In addition, The National Archives at Kew, The British Library and other specialised libraries will be of particular interest to students.

Oxford is also within easy reach of other archival collections in Birmingham, Cambridge, Reading and Bristol.

Careers

Students who have completed an MA have developed a variety of careers. A significant number have gone on to undertake PhD study and secondary school history teaching. Others have taken up careers in archive management; law; accountancy; local government and the civil service as well as GCHQ - all jobs which require excellent research and analysis skills.

Following the core curriculum of the International Association for the Study of Pain, subjects have been designed to update and expand knowledge in the basic sciences, concepts and procedures of pain assessment and management in a variety of human settings. The master's degrees are articulated with the graduate diploma and graduate certificate. That is to say, coursework undertaken for the diplomas or certificate may be counted towards credits required for the master's degrees. Conversely, someone enrolling in the master's program can be awarded a graduate certificate or graduate diploma if circumstances prevent them from completing the master's. Students who have attained an average mark of 70 in all the coursework components of the Master of Medicine/Masters of Science in Medicine may request to undertake the dissertation unit of study in which students undertake a small supervised individual project in applied pain management and write it up in a dissertation. Those who successfully complete the formal dissertation component graduate with Honours. Master's students who choose not to undertake the honours component but complete their coursework units of study with a minimum average mark of 75 per cent will be awarded pass with merit.

Examines in depth the legal questions raised by medical practice and science. The Medical Law pathway forms a part of the MA Medical Law & Ethics programme, which was founded in 1978, and is an important part of the Centre of Medical Law and Ethics, the first of its kind in the UK.

With immediate access to King’s hospitals and laboratories, and close to government, health policy think-tanks, patient advocacy groups, medical and scientific societies, and the private health sector, we offer a unique ‘real-world’ approach to bioethics, allowing students to understand the social and political contexts in which bioethical controversies arise and proposed solutions are developed. In the course of their studies, students are equipped with essential knowledge and skills to make a contribution to resolving bioethical problems. In addition, internship opportunities enable students to gather practical insights and to build professional networks.

- Course format and assessment -

All modules are run as seminars, with a mixture of formal presentation by the instructor and active discussion among members of the seminar. Instructors are also available outside of seminars. Students will have personal guidance from a specific instructor during the dissertation phase. Assessment occurs through a mix of examinations, written work (formative and summative essays) and presentations.

Career prospects

Students who complete the Bioethics & Society programme to a high standard are expected to have numerous career paths open to them. Overview

This degree allows you to develop an in-depth understanding of professional ethics, and what they mean for practitioners in the biomedical and healthcare sectors.

You’ll learn about the ethical issues that arise across medicine and healthcare practice, but you’ll also have the opportunity to specialise in areas that interest you or suit your career aspirations. You’ll take modules on topics such as ethical issues at the beginning and end of life, autonomy and psychiatry, professional issues and allocating medical resources fairly, and focus on a topic of your choice to complete an independent dissertation.

We’re constantly developing the course and consulting with professionals working in the field, so our courses are informed by the most recent developments in practice. But you’ll be taught by active researchers with expertise in teaching ethics across medical disciplines, giving you the chance to engage with the latest academic arguments and debates.

The programme is designed for people who’ve never studied ethics or medical ethics, although we do also have applicants who have studied philosophy before. If you’re interested in thinking about key ethical issues in a reasoned and independent way, you’ll be able to explore big questions in the biomedical and healthcare spheres with the support of the Interdisciplinary Ethics Applied Centre (IDEA).

Distance Learning

There is the option to study this degree online. There are no lectures or seminars and you won’t even have to attend Leeds at any point during the course, although if you can travel there may be chances to meet other students. Instead, you’ll used specially designed interactive teaching materials and participate in structured collaborative activities. You’ll contribute to discussion groups in our Virtual Learning Environment, so you can share experiences and perspectives with students from different backgrounds worldwide.

Study Options

You can also study this subject as a PGDip qualification where you take fewer modules overall. If you don’t have a degree, we usually ask you to register for the PGDip programme – you can upgrade to the MA if you progress successfully. Both the MA and PGDip can be studied part-time over 24 months, which may be of special interest to those who are working in related fields as part of their career development.

This course is also available as an intercalated programme to students who have completed three years of a UK medical degree (or international equivalent) and are normally ranked in the top 50% of their year of study.

Course Content

In Semester 1 you’ll develop your understanding of key concepts and approaches in the study of ethics, as well as how it applies to the biomedical and healthcare fields. You’ll study developments and debates in healthcare ethics and the ethical issues at the beginning and end of life.

You’ll build on this knowledge in the following semester and apply it to the professional context, considering issues like the carer/patient relationship, consent and the roe of the conscience in professional practice. You’ll also explore questions surrounding the distribution of scarce medical resources and compulsion or coercion in cases of mental illness.

Throughout the programme you’ll develop your understanding as well as advanced skills in research and analysis. You’ll showcase this in your dissertation, when you focus on a specific topic of your choice, and submit your work before the end of the course in September.
