COURSE SUMMARY

Our course explores in both theoretical and practical terms current issues in journalism in the context of the digital revolution and media convergence.

  • It combines solid foundations of journalism practice with the latest developments in multimedia techniques, digital journalism and social media
  • It puts students through the fast-paced newsroom environment experience and offers opportunities to get engaged in specialisms such as foreign affairs correspondent, health and science reporter, business and finance writer or data journalist
  • It builds students’ professional portfolios, launches live brief media and journalism projects and embeds students in community programmes on work experience.

With guest lecturers from the BBC and other media organisations, practical workshops and newsdays in industry standard radio and TV studios, the syllabus is as close to real life in the world of digital media as one can get. The theory informs the practice to produce critical and autonomous professionals capable of working with confidence in any global media environment.

TEACHING

This course will be taught through lectures, presentations, seminars and workshops aimed at developing your understanding of the theory and practice of international and online journalism. There will be a number of visiting speakers and guest lecturers, and full use will be made of the growing links between our courses and the BBC and ITV through our base at MediaCityUK to facilitate joint projects and enable students to attend and participate in industry events.  

Student-led independent research, independent study, and project work such as newsdays, will be used alongside ‘problem-based’ and ‘task-based’ teaching, learning and assessment strategies. These will be integrated with an assessment strategy based on outcomes, students’ reflective self-assessments and learning plans. You will also undertake a period of work placement within the journalism community of practice, which will be supported by your module tutors. In certain cases, international students may be able to undertake this work placement in their home country.

ASSESSMENT

Graduates can enter careers in various forms of journalism (print, broadcast or online) either in reporting or management roles, public relations, researchers, media analysts and advisers all either working in this country or abroad. Journalists could work as UK-based foreign correspondents travelling abroad or full-time in overseas postings.

A key element of the course will focus on content creation – an emerging area within Public Relations and Digital Communication. As well as exploring the history of PR and how its relationship with journalism has developed and evolved over the years, you will examine the ethical issues surrounding PR and the ways PR can contribute to the management and protection of an organisation or individual’s reputation.

This programme offers you the opportunity to focus on digital communications strategies as well as more traditional public relations practice.

COURSE STRUCTURE

This 12 month postgraduate course aims to produce highly-skilled graduates who are able to operate professionally in today’s PR and digital communication-related industries.

You will develop cutting-edge knowledge and understanding of the role and influence of PR and digital communication within contemporary society, and the demands on and opportunities for PR and digital communication professionals.

This course will involve developing a professional level of practical skills and understanding in the devising and implementation of PR campaign strategies To develop systematic and advanced research techniques for the evaluation and analysis of critical texts and aspects of current research and scholarship at the forefront of the field of Public Relations and digital communications.

In the first trimester, you will study Public Relations & Journalism and Content Creation modules, which will provide a solid basis on which to develop your skills.

The modules you will study in the second trimester are Understanding PR Campaigns, which looks at case studies and strategies, and Professional PR Practice, which incorporates an industry work placement.

In the third trimester, you will work on a Major Project or a Dissertation.

TEACHING

  • Delivery will include lectures and presentations, seminars and workshops, aimed at development of students’ understanding of the theory and practice of PR and digital communications.
  • Workshops and seminars will explore and develop students’ understanding of PR as an evolving industry. 
  • Visiting speakers from within the industry and related sectors.

CAREER PROSPECTS

Public Relations is one of the fastest growing professions in the UK, employing 62,000 people in 2015.

The importance of the digital economy, and the opportunities and challenges it presents, has been noted by a Lords Select Committee. Its report, entitled Make or Break: The UK’s Digital Future, emphasises the urgent need, at HE level, for industry input, so that graduates are learning job-relevant digital skills. This illustrates the employability value of a postgraduate programme in Public Relations and Digital Communications.

The programme would prepare graduates for work within PR and Digital Communication related industries and feeds into this skills gap in the PR and communications industries. However, it will also provide key transferable skills that are increasingly sought after in today’s job market.

Graduates may go on to secure jobs in the PR and digital communication sectors and also undertake roles in content creation – for example, copywriting, SEO and analytics

Students will be encouraged to take advantage of work placement opportunities which will also be available as part of the programme and there will also be a focus on working with industry partners. The MA in Translation Studies launched by The Centre for Translation and Intercultural Studies in 1995 has been one of the longest-running and most prestigious postgraduate degrees offered by a UK institution.

The MA in Translation and Interpreting Studies (MATIS) aims to equip you with the knowledge and skills for a career in translation and/or interpreting and/or for other professions which require expertise in cross-cultural communication. With its combination of theory and practice, it also provides excellent preparation for further study and research at PhD level.

The translation course units are offered in all language combinations (i.e. English and any other language). However, the interpreting course units are offered in specific language combinations (Arabic, Chinese, French, German and Spanish).

MA students come from Europe, Asia, Africa, North and South America; each year ten or more different languages are spoken by the MA group - a truly multilingual environment in the centre of Manchester!

Aims

The course aims to:
-Equip students with the knowledge and skills for a career in translation and/or interpreting or in other professions which require expertise in cross-cultural communication.

-Translation and interpreting studies as an academic discipline and the various perspectives from which different scholars have attempted to develop theories of translation and interpreting.
-The role of translation and interpreting in solving interlingual and intercultural communication problems.
-The interdisciplinary nature of translation and interpreting studies and the exchange of empirical and theoretical approaches between translation/interpreting studies and other disciplines.
-Research issues in interpreting and translation, including recent approaches, current problems, and potential future developments.

The only course of its kind offered by a Russell Group University, our MA in Screenwriting is an intensive one-year training programme designed to professionalise writers and present a genuine gateway into the film and television industries. Over the course of the year, students will work with leading industry practitioners to develop their screenwriting, pitching and story-breaking skills. By the end of the programme, each student will have developed a full length feature film screenplay, a pilot TV episode and two short films. Like all courses at the Centre for New Writing, this programme is taught by practitioners and as such it is vocationally-oriented and industry-focused. Students will have access to individual career guidance and training in how to navigate entry-level work in both the television and film industries.

The course includes regular speakers from the industry which last year included Beth Pattinson BBC Films ( Brooklyn, We Need to Talk About Kevin, Philomena ), Chris Chibnall (writer and creator of Broadchurch) and Pete Czernin, producer of In Bruges and Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (1 and 2).

The course runs across two twelve week long semesters, during which students will attend weekly writing workshops in which they will study the very best of contemporary screenwriting, including shows such as Breaking Bad, True Detective, The Killing, Broadchurch, This is England, Rev, Transparency and The Sopranos. They will also cover British and American examples of charismatic film screenwriting from Goodfellas to The King's Speech via Alien.

In the second semester there will be a London industry day based at BAFTA with talks from agents, producers, and writers as well as a meeting with the BFI.

Students will study story design, visual story-telling and character arcs in both long-running television series and feature films. They will develop the tools to be able to analyse and critique screenwriting craft, and learn how to disseminate their own work. There will be weekly film screenings, and students will have access to an excellent lending library of films to watch at home. Through the duration of the course students will develop a broad and eclectic knowledge of cinema and television.

We intend to keep learning as specific to individual study as possible and study groups will be intentionally small in scale. The course capacity is limited to twelve students each year and you will be taught through a mixture of screenings, lectures and group discussion. Our `writers' room' ethos ensures an environment that encourages collaboration, sharing and creative risk-taking.

Importantly, each summer, we offer students a two week `hands-on' industry placement at a renowned film or TV production company either in London or the North West. Current partners include Film4 ( Room. Ex_Machina, The Lobster) , Wildgaze (Brooklyn) , Number 9 Films (Carol) , Left Bank (The Crown), Warp (This is England) , Red Productions ( Happy Valley, Scott and Bailey ), and Hammer Films ( The Woman in Black , Let Me In ). These placements are an excellent opportunity for students to make useful contacts, and to develop a practical and direct understanding of the professional context within which screenwriters ply their trade.

Coursework and assessment

To complete the MA, students are required to take 180 credits in total. They will take two semesters of courses consisting of workshops/tutorials and seminars. There are 60 credits in the first semester and 30 in the second with 90 for the dissertation.

-All writing workshops meet for three hours per week.
-Workshops will help students add to their portfolio by including adaptations, scenes, draft scripts, script reports, and genre presentations.
-Each workshop is assessed by a portfolio which will include pitches, treatments, scenes, draft scripts, script reports and notes on how to progress a draft.
-Seminars also meet for three hours per week.
-Students will also be offered two individual half- to one-hour tutorials per semester in order to discuss the progress of their writing.

Over the summer students complete a 'dissertation' which consists of a final revised version of a full-length screenplay. This is worth 60 credits.

Career opportunities

This programme is designed to train its graduates to work in the UK film and television industries. Some will work as professional screenwriters, others may take up other, related, positions.

Teaching and learning

Formalised lectures are rare. Instead, classes tend to mix lecturer input with group work, computer and video activities, simulations, problem-based learning and class discussions. We make considerable use of enquiry-based learning (EBL), encouraging students' critical reflection on their own practice and beliefs: formed both by their professional experiences and intuitions, and theory and research. We encourage both individual and co-operative learning and research and hope to foster an ethos of life-long-learning. As most of our participants are themselves experienced teachers, we appreciate the wealth of knowledge and practical experience that they bring to the course and we encourage all participants to use all sources of professional insights including their fellow participants. We provide training in the use of electronic databases, library resources, and computer based statistics packages. Many other key skills will be developed during the course.

Career opportunities

Graduates from the course can follow a number of career paths: some continue to work in their existing posts, but often with enhanced status; some move into teacher education, materials development, publishing, the media, managing self-access facilities, testing and assessment, research; some set up their own businesses. Alternatively, graduates may use the programme as a springboard into further study, eventually leading to a PhD.

COURSE SUMMARY

This course has been designed to help you find challenging and rewarding work in journalism.

During your time with us, you will learn the skills that you will need to become an incisive, thoughtful and successful journalist.

As well as a general professional grounding in journalism, you will also be able to specialise in your second semester in print and online journalism, broadcast journalism or sports journalism, depending on which pathway you choose in your second semester.

Upon graduation, you will be awarded a PgDip or MA degree and will have had the opportunity to achieve the NCTJ Diploma - all are important qualifications to help launch your career in the UK media industry.

COURSE DETAILS

This is a highly intensive course and only for you if you are fully committed to becoming a working journalist, particularly in the UK. You will study modules closely aligned with the NCTJ syllabus so that you are also able to pass seven components of the NCTJ Diploma, such as Media Law and Reporting. 

During trimester 1, you will study the basic skills of writing news in print, broadcast and online formats. These key skills are supported by study of media law and also ethical practice to encourage you to become a highly aware journalist. Intrinsic to this course are daily sessions of shorthand, a traditional skill still valued by the modern news industry, including broadcast organisations.

COURSE STRUCTURE

You will be able to sit NCTJ examinations at the end of trimester 1 and also complete the NCTJ Portfolio during trimester 2, when you will be encouraged to sit the NCTJ's shorthand exam and pass at 100 words per minute.

At the beginning of trimester 2, you will be able to take one of the three pathways in news, broadcast or sports journalism. However, you will be able to gain the NCTJ qualification, irrespective of the pathway you choose.

Once you pass the Postgraduate Diploma, you are eligible to study the optional MA Major Project in trimester 3 (summer) to be submitted in mid-September.

Work placements are arranged during trimester 1 and trimester 2.

TEACHING

The majority of the course is delivered largely through workshops and students are assessed mainly by coursework and projects, with some formal examinations.

Designed to meet the requirements of media employers in the UK and beyond, the course is taught by dedicated staff with media and industry experience, and strong professional connections. Placement options

A mandatory two-week placement forms part of the course requirements. Tutors have a wide range of industry contacts within the North West and beyond and will actively help students find suitable work placements. The Department has a dedicated work experience website.

On this course you will learn the research, scriptwriting and production skills that you will need to produce polished, professional wildlife documentaries.

As well as lectures and seminars, you will attend masterclasses given by expert practitioners with links to the television industry. Plus you will take field trips to a range of animal habitats, where you will work on individual and group projects.

During your time with us, you will learn specialist wildlife-production techniques, including long-lens and time-lapse photography and close-up sound recording. There is a strong emphasis on professional practice, and your projects will be expected to measure up to scientific scrutiny, as well as exhibition and broadcast standards.

Graduates’ final films have won many awards at national and international festivals.

TEACHING

The course will employ a range of teaching and learning strategies in order to meet learning outcomes. These will include:

The majority of past students have found jobs in the television industry. Examples include:

  • Graduates who are now producer/directors and making long-form documentaries for broadcast
  • Ex-students are working for the BBC Natural History Unit as researchers and assistant producers and editors
  • Ex-students are working for independent Wildlife Documentary Production Companies as cameramen and assistant producers
  • Ex-students are working for ITV, producing short films from their wildlife images catalogue
  • A student is working as an assistant cameraman for a leading wildlife independent company
  • One student is working as a producer for Portuguese TV

LINKS WITH INDUSTRY

This course has a number of links with media companies throughout the UK including the BBC Natural History Unit in Bristol. The current external examiner for the course is the head of the BBC Natural History Unit, Andrew Jackson. Students have undertaken work experience both at the BBC, Warehouse51 Wildlife Production Company and [email protected], the post production company that works on a range of wildlife programmes for the BBC and Disney Nature. Both the course leader and the visiting fellow keep close links with companies within the TV sector, including Panasonic, Sony, Canon and Arriflex to ensure students are aware of latest technologies.
