Facility- and Real Estate Management are on the way to become grown up management disciplines. Managers understand that without a secondary process a primary process cannot exist. Facility- and Real Estate Management are considered nowadays as important parts of the overall business. As a result of this development managers of these departments are more involved in the company’s strategy than ever before and this involvement is not only from a secondary process viewpoint. Assets and facilities services together are responsible for the appropriate support of the primary processes and its stakeholders. Together with the core business they are partners in a kind of joint venture for the benefit of all the stakeholders. Departmental borders get blurred and all business processes interfere. Therefore the Facility- and Real Estate managers have to think and to manage in terms of strategy, choices, visions and goals of the overall business.

Planning should be done in the context of the company business plan. It is important to understand the relationship between the company's business plan, the facility/real estate management plan, and the single strategy of the business units. Incorporated in the task of the manager are two focal points: The first is the use of organisational objectives, both long- and short term. The second is the effective management of the facility/real estate departmental unit(s) within the organisation. Important in his field is the focus on the total environment of the organisation: local, regional, national and global; because a Facility- and Real Estate manager is acting in relationship with- and being responsible for the global world.

Study Plan 2015/2016

The Master Facility- & Real Estate Management (MSc degree) is a 12 month full time study with a study load of 60 credits (ECTS). Integration on a strategic level of Facility- and Real Estate Management is the key issue in this program. This is based upon the insight that assets and facility services together are responsible for the appropriate support of the primary processes and its stakeholders. The program consists of three terms of 4 month each. In Term I the focus is on Strategic Business Management and Strategic Building Management. In Term II the focus is on Strategic Asset Management and Strategic Facility Management. Next to this there is an Module Academic Skills that will be attended during term I and II. Term III is completely focused on the dissertation or thesis, a most valuable instrument for students to customize the program by doing elaborated research on a subject of their own choice. This Research can start as soon as the proposal students need to develop in the module Academic Skills is approved.

The University Master Degree Innovative Hospitality Management, adapted to the European Higher Education Area (60 ECTS,) is the result of an international collaboration between the School of Tourism and Hospitality Management Sant Ignasi (Ramon Llull University - Barcelona, Spain) and the Hotel Management School Maastricht (Zuyd University of Applied Sciences- Maastricht, the Netherlands).

This one-year full time program, held in association with the Oxford School of Hospitality Management (Oxford, UK), is directed at graduates with a particular interest in the creative and multicultural aspects of the hospitality industry.

The study plan consists in 3 blocks: 3 months in Barcelona, 3 months in Maastricht and a minimum of 18 weeks of International Hospitality Research (internship).

What makes a certain place so characteristic? Is it the light, falling in a specific angle through the glass windows? The material and colors of the chairs, tables, curtains, walls, floor? The specific sounds of the room? The touch, the smell of things? The people …? Phenomenological aspects determine the atmosphere of an interior.

The core
Interior at our Master Interior Architecture is no niche, nuance or aspect of architecture, but a fundamental attitude towards the surrounding world. The core of this Master is the understanding of a place in all its manifestations, before you start to transform it because of changing needs and requirements.

What will you learn?
You will learn to develop a concept for a space based on your own ideas and artistic vision and realize that concept. Important part is how to present your conclusions as an essential component of your architectural design. At each assignment you will be asked to draw connections between your own work and that of others and between your work and the audience. Also you will make an active contribution in collaborative projects. In the two years you study in Maastricht you will get the chance to deepen your design skills, personal interpretation of the professional situation and artistic talent. You will obtain subject matter knowledge, insights and skills based on your own applied research.

The first year
Your own atelier
In the first year you will work in your own atelier, where you fulfill hypothetical assignments and where you evaluate your design process step-by-step with your lecturers. In these assignments you will explore materiality, light, time, scale and composition.

Assigments
We start an assignment with excursions to different places, where you test these with your senses and explore it with our time’s state of mind, from within. You research the place’s anatomy, induce empathy and construct understanding. You formulate an intention of how to rebalance the choreography meaningfully and you exemplify the intended meaning as a built structure of explicit materiality. In these assignments the theoretical research and analysis play a key role.

Your graduation project
Final master assessment
In the second year you will focus on your thesis and final work piece. Your graduation project is the final master assessment. With this assessment you will proof that you are able to practice the profession. You will position yourself as an interior architect and present you to the outside world so that you can build the foundation for a future career. It also offers the possibility of a critical contribution to the debate on topical issues, and is valuable for the further development of the field.

Free to choose
The subject of your final project is free to choose but still fairly close in the broad sense of the interior. It is a hypothesis in a built-up area context. The selection and motivation of your graduation project is part of the graduation plan that is submitted. You will have to conclude the place and the primary idea of the intention.

Thesis and anatomical model
Your graduation project consists of two connected layers: the thesis and the anatomical model. The thesis should form the foundation of your project, based of language and theoretical research in historical, philosophical, cultural and socio-political sense. The anatomical model is the concrete implementation of your intention and includes all spatial elements.

To be eligible for admission to the Master's programme, you must hold a music diploma from a recognized institution in the Netherlands (Bachelor of Music), or have attained a comparable level by other means, tailored to the academic programme offered by Maastricht Academy of Music. These programmes are only open to a limited number of participants. Entry is by audition only.

The Master of Music programme is offered by Maastricht Academy of Music and Fontys Conservatorium, Tilburg. These institutions are part of the Fontys and Zuyd University Alliance for Arts Education [Dutch: Alliantie voor de Kunsten Fontys en Zuyd], a joint arts venture between Zuyd University and Fontys University of Professional Education.

It is not surprising that in biomedical sciences traditionally illustrations are created to enable communication between scientist and author, teacher and student, or physician and patient. Art and science come together in scientific illustration.

Your future expertise
When you graduate, you are a specialist who makes accurate visualisations of topics from the clinical, medical and biological domain. You have the skills to use a wide range of traditional and digital visualisation techniques.

Best of two top universities
The Master Scientific Illustration is an international study programme in which you will meet students from European countries and beyond. Unique in Europe. It is cooperation between the Faculty of Arts at Zuyd University of Applied Science in Maastricht and the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences at Maastricht University.

The teaching programme

Training in technical skills
Your training has a strong emphasis on the application of conventional imaging techniques in conjunction with photography, video and computer techniques for accurate two-dimensional display of three-dimensional structures. Additional training in digital three-dimensional reconstruction and modelling is given in workshops. You acquire a broad theoretical basis as well as practical experience in working with medical techniques such as dissection, processing of microscopic and macroscopic serial sections and working with medical imaging techniques such as Computed Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).

Becoming a scientific storyteller
To be able to create a scientifically correct image, you must not only be a good craftsman, but also an outstanding 'storyteller' and communicator. You must be capable of communicating with specialists from different scientific fields, understanding the scientific problem and then be able to convert it into visualisation for a specific target audience. Creating images for patient education requires a different approach than creating images for a group of medical specialists. For this reason you will not only be trained in anatomy and medical nomenclature but you’ll also be guided in the field of communication. Furthermore, by means of practical assignments (including illustrating a surgical procedure) you will build up experience in making abstractions and schematisations of the reality to create an image that tells the scientific story in the best possible way.

The themes
The teaching programme is build up in three themes:

- Man
- Animal
- Human and Animal Surgery

Each of the themes consists of three to five components and each component involves one or more assignments, which deal with various aspects of scientific illustration and in which various traditional visualisation techniques are practised and applied. The assignments are graded in terms of complexity, leading up to the level required for professional practice.
