The MA in Applied Linguistics and ELT programme at St Mary’s has been running for more than 25 years and has helped develop the careers of hundreds of professionals in language teaching, management, publishing and research.

The Applied Linguistics MA is designed primarily for teachers of English and of other modern languages who are interested in extending their knowledge of language and language teaching.

It provides participants with the opportunity to explore developments in applied linguistics and language teaching in the light of their own practical expertise and knowledge.

Why St Mary's?

This is a course with committed lecturers engaging with small groups, usually no more than 10-15 in each year. Compared to many other MA programmes in the UK this is a very low number and we have deliberately kept it small in order to keep the quality of our teaching high. We know all our students by name, and are able to give them a lot of individual attention and support.

We examine not only the subject of teaching, but also the nature of language from diverse theoretical, social and cognitive perspectives.

The content is demanding, but support is also strong. The rewards for students is great, both in how they learn to think about language and in their careers.

Students following the MA Programme have to complete six taught modules. In the full-time programme, three modules are taught per semester over one academic year. In the part-time programme in Berlin, three modules are taught in each of the two years.

Teaching and Assessment

To qualify for the MA you will need to be awarded 180 credits. There are six essays to complete, one for each module, and each worth 20 credits. The dissertation is worth 60 credits. The pass mark is 50%. Marks between 60% and 69% are in the merit category; marks over 70% are in the distinction category.

You will usually be taught in seminar groups of no more than 15 students. Small classes facilitate lively discussion and the forging of close and supportive academic relationships between students.

Full-time students attend three 2-hour seminars per week, currently timetabled for Thursdays and Fridays. In the Autumn semester, there is an additional Academic Orientation module that runs for six weeks. In the Spring semester there is an additional Research Methods module that runs for ten weeks.

We encourage an open and friendly relationship between students and staff. Students should feel free to make tutorial appointments with tutors, who are always happy to meet with them.

Bioethics is relevant to all our lives. Even if we never work in healthcare it touches us when we are most vulnerable - when we or those we care for are unwell.

Whether assisted dying, stem cell therapies or three-parent IVF, bioethics is also often in the news and having a greater understanding of the issues involved can enable more in-depth public engagement.

Reflection on the ethical principles that underlie medical and allied practice is an important part of continuing career development for healthcare professionals. Almost every day, it seems some new ethical dilemma appears in the news; whether to do with stem cell research, assisted suicide, resource allocation, nanotechnologies, human cloning or health and climate change.

Course Content

[What you will study
The MA in Bioethics and Medical Law is offered both part-time (normally over two or three years) and full-time (over one year). In the onsite mode of delivery, teaching is conducted through evening seminars. This involves one seminar a week in the case of part-time students and two a week for full-time students. Both onsite and online students attend eight (full time) or four (part-time) Saturday day conferences and participate in online discussions.

The course has one entry point but three possible exit points. After successfully completing 60 credits worth of modules (at least 30 credits of which must be core) it is possible to gain a Postgraduate Certificate in Bioethics and Medical Law . After successfully completing 120 credits, it is possible to gain a Postgraduate Diploma in Bioethics and Medical Law . The full Master's' in Bioethics and Medical Law is awarded on successful completion of 180 credits, that is six taught modules plus a 15,000-word dissertation of the requisite quality.

This structure has the great benefit of flexibility. It may be that a student initially intends to study for a Master's, but his or her circumstances change, making it impossible to complete the full quota of modules. Such a student may still be able to obtain a Certificate or a Diploma, and thus receive credit for the work he or she has done. Another student may wish to start with the Certificate before deciding whether to progress to the Diploma or the Master's.

You will study individually and as part of a group. At the beginning of the course, you will be allocated a personal supervisor who will oversee the development of your draft through tutorials.

Group work seeks to cultivate the collaborative atmosphere and productivity of an artist’s colony, through peer led workshops, meetings with experienced authors and encounter with readers. The supportive and comitted nature of our cohort is important to us, and we seek to put together the best possible people, for the best possible learning experience.

The course takes you from the exploratory phase of writing through to re-drafting, in five modules, across three semesters and a lecture series.

In addition to the modules and workshops, your cohort will be visited by working authors and industry figures, who will talk about their working practice and experiences in publishing.

Assessment

Each module produces a creative element of your draft which will be assessed. In the seminar modules, you will also be assessed by presentation to the group.

One-to-one tutorial feedback and support is essential for the writer aiming to complete a productive draft in just one year.

Why has the ‘Gothic’ been so prevalent in the fields of literature, art, architecture, film and music in the past 250 years? What does this tell us about ourselves, and the society in which we live? How has the genre changed, and how is it possible for us to define our identities within, and in relation to, the Gothic?

These are some of the questions you will be invited to consider on this course, which gives you the opportunity to study the fascinating subject of Gothic culture, in all its many forms, where it all began: on the site of Horace Walpole’s Gothic mansion in Strawberry Hill, South West London.

You will also be trained at postgraduate level in the research methods of these disciplines, preparing you for advanced study in the humanities disciplines.

This Masters programme provides an advanced critical insight into current developments in the study of migration, organised crime and human trafficking. As such, this programme is one of the few worldwide to offer students the chance to study the main characteristics of modern forms of slavery, their causes/roots, impacts, and ways (legal and others) of fighting/preventing them. It is unique in examining, in an interdisciplinary manner, the intersection between human trafficking and migratory flows, and forced labour, and organised crime.

The proposed programme will combine vocational and theoretical components. Students will study the social conditions in which human trafficking occurs, including wealth, social and gender inequalities; migration due to political instability, war and poverty; and the role of criminal gangs and organised crime groups in the proliferation of this crime in recent years. The modus operandi of traffickers and their networks will be explored as will the challenges raised by the role in family members and communities in this increasingly complex issue.

Students will also engage critically with existing legal frameworks and policing in place to combat human trafficking. Students will also examine different discourses used to analyse the issue including debates about terminology, media representations, effectiveness of anti-trafficking policies and the efficacy of rescue and rehabilitation programmes.

Emma Paton, Graduated in 2012

Emma is currently a sub-editor and digital reporter at Sky Sports News HQ. Emma recently presented ‘behind the scenes’ coverage on one of SSN’s busiest dates - Transfer Deadline Day. Her role as a sub-editor sees her help produce Good Morning Sports Fans - the 6-10am slot on SSN.

During her MA she did various work placements including an internship on the news desk at the British Olympic Association during London 2012 – which St Mary’s put her forward for.

On finishing her Masters, Emma's first and only interview was at Sky Sports News – where she started as an online journalist for skysports.com and later moved to production.

Course Content

We select between 15 and 20 students each year who will embark on a demanding training course taught by professional journalists, broadcasters and academics. In addition to developing essential journalism skills such as fast, accurate and engaging writing, research and interviewing, we also offer training in how to use digital media.

Our curriculum also reflects the high expectations of the profession. You will therefore sit exams set by the National Council for Training Journalists in Reporting, Media Law, Public Affairs, Shorthand, Court Reporting and Sports Journalism. We pay for all you NCTJ exams (excluding resits).

We will also develop your knowledge and understanding of key ethical concerns such as impartiality, truth and accuracy as well as debate critical issues such as the regulation of the press, privacy, freedom of information and the impact of social media.

In addition to your work placements and regular contributions to our online sports magazine, the MA programme includes the following taught modules:

Work Placements

Between September and May, the course is normally taught over four consecutive days, usually Tuesday to Friday, leaving three days a week and evenings for work experience and placements. In the summer, the students devote even more time to work experience.

This is an essential part of our training programme. We work with each students to find them their most suitable work placements as well as encouraging them to freelance for various publications. We do this as soon as a student accepts a place on the course.

Our students take full advantage of our extensive contacts in the industry. We already have a very good working relationship with a number of news organisations, broadcasters and publishers including Sky Sports News, Haymarket (who publish FourFourTwo), IMG media, and goal.com.

Sportsbeat, our training partners, will offer our trainees opportunities to write stories, produce match reports and carry out interviews for all their major publications, which usually includes the RBS Six Nations website, The League Paper, the Non-League Paper, The Rugby Paper, and The Cricket Paper.

In the last two years our students have secured work experience on The Daily Mail, The Independent, The Daily Telegraph, The Guardian and The Times, The Richmond and Twickenham Times and other Newsquest titles, the Press Association, The Birmingham Mail and other Trinity Mirror titles, Sky Sports, the BBC, and RTE in Ireland.

Our students have also worked on the following magazines, Four Four Two, Shoot, TennisHead, FHM, and Sportsister.

Career Prospects

Sport has never been more popular. It is a global industry driven by high levels of consumer demand and the revolution in digital communications. These developments are creating new career opportunities for sports writers and a wide range of related professions where trained journalists are in high demand (especially in online communications, public relations, sports advertising, corporate sponsorship, events management, sports charities and the betting industry).

The MA in Theatre Directing is predominantly housed at The Orange Tree in Richmond, enabling students to embed their practice in the working life of this award-winning theatre. Modules are taught by both academics and theatre directors with the assistance of professional actors in the practical classes.

The programme is both academic and vocational. It aims to provide an advanced understanding of theatre production processes within a context of both contemporary theatre making and the dramatic tradition. It further aims to develop students’ craft skills and technical abilities in order to prepare them for a career in theatre directing.

The programme is aimed both at graduates who wish to advance their understanding of theatre practice in order to develop their work to a professional standard and at theatre professionals who wish to formalise their experience with a course of study and a qualification.

Why St Mary's?

Directing workshops explore rehearsal techniques, script analysis, performance, design and technical aspects of production. A key module focuses on directing as a career. There is a particular emphasis on the study of the working relationship between the director and the performer.

At the end of the course students present a showcase production at the Orange Tree, or another London fringe theatre. Study is over one year full-time or two years part-time.

Previous graduates have found assistant and associate directing work with all of the major companies, including the Royal Shakespeare Company, the National Theatre, Out of Joint and the Royal Court.

The Drama department has three fully equipped studios and a large theatre for rehearsal purposes. Technical and administrative staff support the programme throughout the year and students are provided with a production budget for their end-of-year production.

Theology is primarily concerned with how we live out and understand our Christian faith. As well as teaching the theoretical aspects of the faith, our postgraduate theology programmes have always placed a special emphasis on the application of theology to specific practical situations and the preparation and formation of people for Christian ministry in a fast moving age:

It is possible to study for three postgraduate qualifications in Theology: the Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma and Master's Degree. Each builds on the other so having completed the two core modules of the course you will be eligible for the Postgraduate Certificate. If you successfully complete the Optional Modules you will be eligible for the Postgraduate Diploma and if this is followed with the Dissertation you will be eligible for the Master's degree.

St Mary’s now has agreements with the Roman Catholic Dioceses of Northampton, Portsmouth, and Plymouth, and the Southern Permanent Diaconate Formation Programme.
