Criminologists investigate the causes, consequences and reactions to crime – and this course gives you hands-on experience in real-world situations, designing, analysing and evaluating criminal justice and crime control strategies.

With an interesting and varied curriculum, this programme has a very strong emphasis on applied knowledge and job market skills. You’ll learn by doing; bridging the gap between the classroom and the police station, the lecture theatre and the community centre, and between research and policy. This course is intended to create sophisticated criminological practitioners, able to navigate the realities of criminal justice and crime control, with superior experience, skills and knowledge of how to think, act and reflect criminologically.

This MA has a strong emphasis on communication, research, problem-solving, teamwork, and policy analysis. These skills will be developed through classroom discussion and debate through practical engagement with external criminal justice and community safety organisations. You’ll be taught by a team of expert criminologists from a variety of specialist backgrounds, including: law, sociology, psychology, history, and politics.

Study information

Classes will be interactive, discursive, and task-based. There will be few traditional ‘lectures’, but plenty of workshops where you’ll be involved in planning, preparing and leading. With support from staff, you’ll have the freedom to shape the course of your learning and focus on your personal interests and career ambitions.

The course is flexible, teaching is blended between fortnightly 2-hour workshops interspersed with preparation and online support. Assessment is task-based and varied, and will include: written essays, oral presentations, events organisation, engagement projects, research projects and problem-solving exercises. The Crime Control and Community Safety Hub provides a separate resource room and office space for students on this degree to meet and undertake project work.

You’ll be provided with a high level of support throughout your studies, and academic support tutors work with small groups to provide support and advice.

Future prospects

The MA in Criminal Justice and Crime Control aims to produce postgraduates who are versatile communicators, effective problem-solvers, policy analysts, and evidence-led decision makers.

Literature is a dynamic force for change. Hull English postgraduates gain insight into society, culture and politics by developing an understanding of the power of language. And both the MA and the MRes programmes provide students with a thorough grounding in research methods and practices.

We offer dedicated routes for study and supervision in both Literary Studies and Creative Writing. There are also designated pathways allowing students to focus their studies on Medieval and Renaissance Literature and Culture, Nineteenth-Century Literature and Culture, and Modern and Contemporary Literature and Culture. Creative Writing modules allow students to focus their interests on both fiction and non-fiction prose forms, and / or poetry. Students can opt to take a combination of Literary Studies and Creative Writing modules if suitably qualified.

Staff are internationally renowned and working at the cutting edge of their disciplines, both literary and creative.

Students will be taught and supervised by experts specialising in wide-ranging chronological pathways from Chaucer to the 21st century. We make full use of tutor research interests in areas such as Shakespeare, Victorian visual culture, contemporary fiction, gender and popular culture, children’s literature, the Gothic, and creative writing. 

Study information

All MA and MRes students undertake a core training module on Research, Creativity and Engagement in the first semester. This culminates in a one-day postgraduate conference, a process through which students will be guided and supported by the module tutors and convenor. Students will also take three optional modules in their chosen subjects, which will all include elements of research / creative training.

For MA students, there is a final dissertation / creative portfolio worth 60 credits, and taught modules are worth 120 credits in total (30 credits each module). For MRes students, the final dissertation / portfolio is worth 120 credits, and the taught modules are worth 60 credits (2 x 30-credit modules).

Teaching methods will include three-hour seminars, creative writing workshops, student presentations and small group exercises.

Widening your analytical lens beyond anything you will have been asked to do at undergraduate level, you will learn to ‘ask better questions’ that would matter just as much to a medievalist or a historian of the present. The full-time programme is scheduled over 45 weeks, divided into three 15-week trimesters. The part-time programme is the same but spread over two years.

In Trimester 1, you take our core module, Research Project Management for Historians, and one option matching the period or field of your research from the following: Practising Medieval and Early Modern History; Practising Modern History; Feminist and Gender Politics in History, Theory and Practice. Students who choose the latter will work alongside students in the world-leading GEMMA programme of interdisciplinary gender studies.

In Trimester 2, you choose both thematic options, Power, Authority and Freedom in History and Memory, Meaning and History. Together, these will challenge you to draw conclusions from the past which range beyond your specialist period into a wider field of historical debate.

Most of our optional modules use our innovative ‘block’ system, putting you in control of how you combine topics. In appropriate cases, an alternative 30-credit module may be taken outside the Department of History, if it is suitable for your research needs.

The dissertation, at 18,000 words, is the culmination of your postgraduate study and requires greater analytical depth, plus greater critical engagement with source material, than anything you will have experienced as an undergraduate. Our expert supervision will support you through the transition.

Students on our MA History programme often aim to continue into doctoral research at Hull or another higher education institution. Those who use their level 7 qualification as a springboard to a career often go into commercial research, teaching, management, law or the Civil Service.

These postgraduate programmes aim to create highly sought-after researchers who are ready to apply their advanced knowledge and practical skills in the workplace or on further research.

You will learn how to collect, analyse and interpret social data and become skilled in interview techniques, surveys, problem-solving, communication skills and the latest industry software.

Students examine issues from across the social sciences and are introduced to both quantitative and qualitative research methods before having the option of specialising.

During the programme, you will research real world issues such as evaluating local health care services, predicting voting behaviour during elections or researching the impact of Hull’s year as the 2017 UK City of Culture on local people.

Taught by experienced researchers who are experts in their fields, the interesting and varied curriculum will be delivered through an enquiry-based approach to teaching including small-group work, tutorials, workshops and independent study.

It was designed with input from industry experts, former students and leading academics to ensure that it means the demands of the modern social research industry.

This innovative and challenging two-year programme has been validated by the HCPC (Health and Care Professions Council). Those who successfully complete the programme will be eligible to apply to register as a qualified social worker with the HCPC.

The programme enjoys strong relationships with service users and carers and a range of statutory and voluntary agencies. You will experience high-quality placements which offer excellent learning opportunities and support in practice. You will also have the unique opportunity to apply for a placement in the University’s own voluntary social work agency, the Family Assessment and Support Unit (FASU), which was awarded one of the Queen’s Anniversary Prizes for Higher and Further Education for its innovations in practice learning. The MA in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) is designed primarily for language graduates, or those with either a teaching qualification or experience. It is ideal if you want to acquire an in-depth knowledge of English and how to teach it, and to explore new developments in language teaching and the use of technology in the classroom.

Key features include the theory, research and practical aspects of language teaching through observation, reflection and practice. The MA in TESOL at Hull is unusual in that we include a practical teaching component, with observed classroom practice an integral part of the course. As such, newcomers to teaching and experienced classroom practitioners alike can explore the role of a language teacher in the modern world.

You will be able to explore innovative language learning and teaching, using a range of technologies in the classroom and online. Our Language Learning Centre hosts a wealth of material on campus, including a library of audio and visual resources and teaching rooms equipped with the latest technology.

You will have the opportunity to combine TESOL with Translation Studies, either with the emphasis on TESOL or Translation Studies, selecting modules from each programme.

You can develop advanced academic English language skills and research techniques in the dissertation module seminar series.

Study information

The central themes of the programme engage with theoretical and practical teaching issues. You follow introductory modules in Semester 1. In Semester 2, you have the opportunity to enhance your practical teaching skills and look at innovative approaches to teaching, building on theoretical expertise developed in the first semester. In Semester 3, you undertake a 15,000-word dissertation.

The primary methods are by essays and continuous assessment, followed by a 15,000-word dissertation for the Masters stage of the programme.

MA in TESOL with Translation Studies

If you want to acquire an in-depth knowledge of English and how to teach it, but would like the added employability from understanding translation theories and practice, the MA in TESOL with Translation Studies offers a distinct pathway.

This combined course enables you to study modules in line with your future career. You will major in and study the same core modules as the straight TESOL Masters, but can choose from a variety of translation studies modules as options.

The MA in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) with Translation Studies is designed for language graduates, ideally with either a teaching qualification or some teaching experience, who want to acquire an in-depth knowledge of English and how to teach it, but who are also interested in translation theories and practice.

Students have the opportunity to examine the theory, research and practical aspects of language teaching through observation, reflection and practice, as well as examining from a practical and theoretical perspective the nature and process of translation. There is also an opportunity to explore the use of translation technologies or focus on innovation in language learning and teaching.

The MA/Diploma in TESOL with Translation Studies is offered as a one-year full-time programme (course code 882619) and as a two-year part-time programme (course code 882622). The predominant mode of examination on this programme is by coursework and continuous assessment.
